Vcu Voice (1998-06-08)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Characterization Of Protective Immune Responses In Local Lymphoid Tissues After Drug-Attenuated Infections With Ostertagia Ostertagi In Calves, S. Almerâõa, A. Canals, M.T. Gomez- Munos, D.S. Zarlenga, L.C. Gasbarre Jun 1998

Characterization Of Protective Immune Responses In Local Lymphoid Tissues After Drug-Attenuated Infections With Ostertagia Ostertagi In Calves, S. Almerâõa, A. Canals, M.T. Gomez- Munos, D.S. Zarlenga, L.C. Gasbarre

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In the present study, cell-surface markers and cytokine gene expression of lymphocytes from the local lymph nodes were studied 9 days after primary infection with Ostertagia ostertagi in previously naive calves or in calves previously immunized with multiple, chemically attenuated infections. Changes in lymphocyte populations were assessed by flow cytometry utilizing monoclonal antibodies specific for bovine cell-surface markers. Changes observed in the percentages of lymphoid populations after challenge were similar in animals immunized by either three or five drug-attenuated infections. In both immunized groups, the CD4􏰄/CD8􏰄 ratio was significantly higher than in naive animals after challenge infections. In addition, both …

Spiegel

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In October 1995, epidemic “hemorrhagic fever,” without jaundice or renal manifestations, was reported in rural Nicaragua following heavy flooding; 2259 residents were evaluated for nonmalarial febrile illnesses (cumulative incidence, 6.1%) and 15 (0.7%) died with pulmonary hemorrhage. A case-control study found that case-patients were more likely than controls to have ever walked in creeks (matched odds ratio [MOR], 15.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.7–132.3), have household rodents (MOR, 10.4; 95% CI, 1.1–97.1), or own dogs with titers ≥ 400 to Leptospira species (MOR, 23.4; 95% CI, 3.6–`). Twenty-six of 51 case-patients had serologic or postmortem evidence of acute leptospirosis. Leptospira …

Coping Mechanisms Used By Socially And Emotionally Isolated Older Adults, Paulla Dechmann Jun 1998

Coping Mechanisms Used By Socially And Emotionally Isolated Older Adults, Paulla Dechmann

Theses and Graduate Projects

This exploratory and descriptive qualitative study was undertaken to examine the nature of social and emotional isolation as it impacts older adults by examining the coping mechanisms they use. The participants (N=15), clients of Senior Community Services and CommonBond Communities, completed a structured interview consisting of nineteen primarily open-ended questions. The study looked at the issues of social and emotional isolation as it was identified by participants, the amount of support they received, and the methods they used to cope with any recognized feelings of isolation. The survey identified those persons involved in the senior's life, how frequently contact was …

Abundance And Seasonal Distribution Of The Marbled Murrelet In Puget Sound And Hood Canal In Fall And Winter, Richard Anthony Jensen Merizon Jun 1998

Abundance And Seasonal Distribution Of The Marbled Murrelet In Puget Sound And Hood Canal In Fall And Winter, Richard Anthony Jensen Merizon

Dissertations and Theses

The greater Puget Sound area is home to a diversity of seabirds, however with encroaching human recreational and economic use of these areas these birds are facing unique threats. It is vitally important that we understand where these seabirds occur in order to minimize the risks associated with human influences. Intensive and extensive transects were used to collect data on seasonal distribution and abundance of seabirds, specifically marbled murrelets (Brachyramphus marmoratus), in Puget Sound and Hood Canal. Surveys were conducted from the water during the fall and winter in 1995 and 1996 and summer of 1997. Marbled murrelets were abundant …

Influence Of Food Resources And Temperature On The Distribution And Energy Balance Of Bear Lake Sculpin, Cottus Extensus, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Clyde Lay Jun 1998

Influence Of Food Resources And Temperature On The Distribution And Energy Balance Of Bear Lake Sculpin, Cottus Extensus, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Clyde Lay

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Changes in the abundance, diet, and daily ration of adult and sub-adult Bear Lake sculpin (Cottus extensus) were investigated seasonally along a littoral to profundal transect in Bear Lake to determine if or when sculpin were food limited. During different seasons, sculpin migrated inshore or offshore. These were most pronounced for age 1 + sculpin, 35-55 mm in length. This age class was most abundant in the littoral zone, particularly in August. The migrations of age two and older sculpin were less pronounced, and most of these fish were located in the profundal zone (>30 m). The …
