Another Model Of Outdoor And Environmental Education, Clifford E. Knapp
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
After reading Charles Yaple's article, ''Envisioning Environmental and Outdoor Education" in the May, 1997 issue of Taproot , I decided to offer my definitions and diagrammatic concept model in order to continue the "conversation:
Outdoor education is a set of planned and unplanned experiences related to the formal school or college curriculum which take place outsi4e the school building. The selection of these experiences is based on the educational objectives judged • to be best met through unmediated (direct and in context) interaction with local community and surrounding 6 Taproot Summer 1998 areas. The study topics include a variety of …

Warrior-Club Traditions In Medieval Switzerland, Arnold H. Price
Warrior-Club Traditions In Medieval Switzerland, Arnold H. Price
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This article endeavors to serve as an extension (as well as a confirmation) of my research on the role of warrior clubs during the era of migrations, the so-called Völkerwanderung. In regard to the Völkerwanderung terminology I am relying in this study primarily on the ground-breaking work of the late Hans Georg Wackemagel, whose novel anthropological approach unearthed and analyzed a substantial body of pagan traditions surviving in medieval Helvetia.

Neurology Collection
While functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is now used widely for demonstrating neural activity-related signals associated with perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes in humans, to date this technique has not been developed for use with nonhuman primates. fMRI in monkeys offers a potentially valuable experimental approach for investigating brain function, which will complement and aid existing techniques such as electrophysiology and the behavioral analysis of the effects of brain lesions. There are, however, a number of significant technical challenges involved in using fMRI with monkeys. Here, we describe the procedures by which we have overcome these challenges to …

Department of English: Faculty Publications
In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s there are few.
—Shunryu Suzuki
Recently I moved to Las Cruces in the southern part of New Mexico. My new home lies in the Mesilla Valley of the Rio Grande, as it courses muddy through the Chihuahuan desert, North America’s largest but least celebrated arid land. The Organ Mountains rise to the east, serrating the dawn’s liminal blue. In the fi rst few weeks of my residence, I made some tentative contacts with the landscape on a series of short hikes, toting my 16-month-old boy, Riley, in a backpack. …

A Management-Oriented Classification Of Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Great Basin, Neil E. West, Robin J. Tausch, Paul T. Tueller, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Pinyon-juniper woodlands occupy about 18 percent (7.1 million ha, 17.6 million acres) of the land area of the Great Basin (Tueller and others 1979). The associated tree species are found over a wide range of environmental conditions extending from communities representative of the upper fringes of the Mohave Desert to communities found at the lower fringes of high mountain forests. Over this spatial and elevational range, communities associated with pinyon-juniper woodlands are highly variable, with complex distribution and compositional patterns. This variability is due to climatic changes occurring over the last 10,000 years and to variation in current environmental conditions …

Fisheries Management Papers
Following the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee meeting of the 3 March 1998 the Minister has advised that his position is that there will be no management changes for the 1998/99 season. The purpose of this paper is primarily to provide information explaining management options and issues for consideration of the long term management of the fishery. The paper is divided into three main sections which detail options that have been identified as having the potential to increase the catch value over the next three years. In the first section, an option for enhancing the catch value by transferring lobsters …

Aggressivity And Violence: An Alternative Theory Of Human Nature, Mary E. Clark

Excerpt
I open by clarifying the term "aggression" which is used in many contexts besides the one I am discussing (e.g. "the aggressive treatment of disease," or "the aggression of a predatory hunter," etc.). I restrict it to "intentional acts of violence meant to hurt one another, physically or psychologically."

Insect Herbivory Above- And Belowground: Individual And Joint Effects On Plant Fitness, John L. Maron
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Understanding of the selective effects of insect herbivory on plants comes primarily from studies of herbivory aboveground. The impact of belowground herbivory, either in isolation or in concert with herbivory aboveground, on plant fitness is only beginning to be understood.
I reduced the densities of root-boring ghost moth (Hepialus californicus) larvae and/or flower- and seed-feeding insects of bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus), a woody shrub, and followed fecundity and survival of plants for three years. In year one, suppression of aboveground herbivores increased mean seed output by 31%, but suppression of belowground herbivores had no significant effect …

Fisheries Research Report No. 110 - A Research Vessel Survey Of Bottom Types In The Area Of The Abrolhos Islands And Mid-West Trawl Fishery., C. J. Dibden, L. M. Joll
Fisheries Research Reports
To address the concern expressed by Commercial rock lobster fishers operating in the Abrolhos Islands area, that expanding saucer scallop trawl activity was damaging the sea floor biota in areas which they considered good rock lobster habitat and poor scallop habitat, an underwater video survey was conducted by the Fisheries Department Research Division, with the following objectives:
1. Examine, classify and map the benthic habitat of areas currently and historically trawled for scallops in the Abrolhos Islands area and adjacent waters;
2. Examine, classify and map the benthic habitat of areas adjacent to these trawled areas, where potential for conflict …

Pushing Rbst: How The Law And The Political Process Were Used To Sell Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin To America, David Aboulafia
Pace Environmental Law Review
This Article examines the controversy surrounding the use of rBST, a genetically altered growth hormone, in cows so that they produce more milk. Biotechnology holds tremendous benefits for society. However, this Article examines the inadequacy of the current regulatory scheme in addressing rBST. This Article contends that the inadequate nature of the regulatory scheme is due to the fact that lawmakers are overly concerned with the protection and development of the biotechnology industry. The law, as it stands, does not take into consideration the unknown health risks of rBST.

Breed differences in performance characteristics are an important genetic resource for- improving efficiency of beef production. Diverse breeds are required to exploit heterosis and complementarity through crossbreeding and composite populations to match genetic potential with diverse markets, feed resources and climates. Beef producers are under increasing pressure to reduce fat while maintaining or improving tenderness and palatability of products. No single breed excels in all traits of importance to beef production. Previous results have shown that Bos indicus X Bos taurus (e.g., Brahman, Sahiwal and Nellore sired F1 cows out of Hereford and Angus dams) crosses were exceptionally productive …

Sustainability And Resource Assessment: A Case Study Of Soil Resources In The United States, Dana L. Hoag, Jennie S. Hughes Popp, D. Eric Hyatt
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Assessment of environmental condition is critical to wise management and policy decisions. However, for some concerns such as sustainability, it is difficult to assess environmental condition because it involves disparate social objectives and an understanding of complex ecological systems. Here, a general framework is proposed to examine sustainability of environmental resources in objective, measurable ways. By using soil quality as an example, sustainability research is taken beyond theory and into application.
Sustainability depends on the quality of resource endowment. Endowment of a natural resource can be modeled as an index of quality to assess the degree of sustainable management. This …
