Development And Evaluation Of A Noninvasive Hemoglobinometer, Shonn P. Hendee, Dwayne R. Westenskow
Development And Evaluation Of A Noninvasive Hemoglobinometer, Shonn P. Hendee, Dwayne R. Westenskow
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Measurement of hemoglobin concentration is among the most common clinical procedures. It is necessary in screening for anemia and is a means of providing a general assessment of physical well-being. Current methods for measuring hemoglobin concentration are invasive, requiring blood access. This paper describes a novel technique for measuring hemoglobin concentration noninvasively. The method takes advantage of the unique optical properties of hemoglobin to make the measurement. A vascularized tissue bed is transilluminated with a narrow linewidth optical source at an isobestic wavelength of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin. The transmitted light intensity is measured as the tissue is compressed, which causes …

An Addition To The History Of Psychoanalysis: An Encounter Between Z.V. Togan And S. Freud, Ibpp Editor
International Bulletin of Political Psychology
This article was submitted to IBPP by Dr. H.B. Paksoy concerning the historian Z. V. Togan. It is taken--with appropriate permission--from Z. V. Togan's Hatiralar (Memoirs) as translated by Dr. Paksoy and published in Paksoy's Central Asia Reader: The rediscovery of history. (NY/London: M.E. Sharpe, 1994). (Ed.). ISBN 1-56324-201-X (hardcover)/ISBN 1-56324-202-8 (paperback). Dr. Paksoy's translation was developed to preserve Togan's syntax. What follows is brief introductory material about Dr. Paksoy and Z.V. Togan, then the article entitled A Poem of Mother's and Freud, and finally a brief commentary by IBPP.

Needs Assessment: Photovoltaics In Disasters, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
Needs Assessment: Photovoltaics In Disasters, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
FSEC Energy Research Center®
In recent years, solar energy has been used sporadically for disaster relief. Disaster relief organizations knew very little about photovoltaics; therefore, the technology was not included in their plans or operations. Likewise, the photovoltaic (PV) industry has not been directly involved on disaster teams, and did not aggressively pursue associated markets.
However, the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) recently completed an energy needs assessment of disaster response, recovery and mitigation activities. The study found that PV is best suited for specialized or dedicated applications that need to operate for long periods of time. This paper …

Expression Of Constitutively Active Raf-1 In The Mitochondria Restores Antiapoptotic And Leukemogenic Potential Of A Transformation-Deficient Bcr/Abl Mutant., P Salomoni, M A Wasik, R F Riedel, K Reiss, J K Choi, T Skorski, B Calabretta
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
The oncogenic BCR/ABL protein protects hematopoietic cells from apoptosis induced by growth factor deprivation, but the mechanisms are only partially understood. A BCR/ABL mutant lacking amino acids 176-426 in the BCR domain (p185DeltaBCR) failed to protect interleukin 3-deprived 32Dcl3 myeloid precursor cells from apoptosis, although it possessed tyrosine kinase activity and was capable of activating the Ras-Raf-MAP kinase pathway. Compared to p185 wild-type transfectants, p185DeltaBCR-transfected cells showed markedly reduced levels of Bcl-2 and expressed the hypophosphorylated, proapoptotic form of BAD. Bcl-2 expression in the mitochondrial fraction of p185DeltaBCR cells was also markedly diminished and mitochondrial RAF was undetectable. In p185DeltaBCR …

Does Lara Croft Ware Fake Polygons, Anne-Marie Schleiner
SWITCH
An analysis of the role of gender in the 1996 video game, "Tomb Raider", using multiple theoretical approaches to discuss issues of gender roles and gender identity. The author argues that prior to Tomb Raider, popular games revolved around a male protagonist, but with the introduction of Lara Croft, the gaming world has changed. The article explores the implications of the female protagonist in Tomb Raider, characterizing Lara Croft as a techno-puppet to the male-gaze, a drag queen, a dominatrix, and a powerful feminist role model. Artistic and creative game patches provide an “opportunity for feminists to influence the formation …

The VNS Matrix is based in Australia and comprises members; Josephine Starrs, Julianne Pierce, Virginia Barratt, and Francesca da Rimini. VNS Matrix's goal is to resist the gendered dominance of technologies by questioning identity and gender. The articles discusses the "VNS Matrix Manifesto" and one of the VNS Matrix’s major works, "All New Gen", and introduces Rimini’s site called Gashgirl, which is also the name of one of her personas. The article wraps up with an interview between the author and Gashgirl, where Gashgirl talks …

Using Impact Group Therapy With Middle School Students With Behavioral Disorders, Jennifer Marafioti
Using Impact Group Therapy With Middle School Students With Behavioral Disorders, Jennifer Marafioti
Theses
Middle school students with behavioral disorders offer the greatest challenge to standard group counseling curriculas. Their age places them at the threshold of adolescence which is a notably difficult stage of development. Their disorder places them at risk of peer rejection and school failure. The rationale for developing a group counseling toolbox is to make it easier for counselors to utilize a multi-sensory approach with this unique population of students. This curricula will consist of group counseling activities appropriate for middle school students with behavioral disorders as well as the props needed to facilitate success.
