Genetic And Phenotypic Parameters For Carcass Traits Of American Shorthorn Beef Cattle, F. Pariacote, R. E. Hunsley, L. Dale Van Vleck Jun 1998

Genetic And Phenotypic Parameters For Carcass Traits Of American Shorthorn Beef Cattle, F. Pariacote, R. E. Hunsley, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Carcass measurements were taken on 1,292 steers and collected by the American Shorthorn Association. The sires were purebred or appendix-registered Shorthorn. Because all dams were not Shorthorn, genetic fractions of breeds of origin were determined for each dam. Measurements for hot carcass weight; dressing percentage; fat thickness; ribeye area; kidney, pelvic, and heart fat (KPH); marbling; and yield grade were analyzed jointly with a multivariate REML algorithm to estimate heritabilities of and genetic and phenotypic correlations among the traits. The sire model chosen as best fit of the data included fixed effects of herd of origin (377 classes), slaughter group …

Implantable Controlled Release Device To Deliver Drugs Directly To An Internal Portion Of The Body, Paul Ashton, Paul A. Pearson

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Patents

A simple and implantable sustained release drug delivery device with an inner core containing an effective amount of a low solubility agent covered by a non-bioerodible polymer coating layer that is permeable to the low solubility agent is disclosed. A method for treating a mammal to obtain a desired local or systemic physiological or pharmacological effect by surgically implanting such a sustained release drug delivery device into a mammal in need of treatment is also disclosed.

State Of The Fisheries Report 1997/1998, Jim W. Penn Jun 1998

State Of The Fisheries Report 1997/1998, Jim W. Penn

Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources

The State of the Fisheries document is designed as an essential supplement to the Annual Report to Parliament. By summarising data such as landings, effort, catch rates, stock assessment and breeding stock levels, this document provides a valuable reference point for all Western Australian fisheries of major importance to the commercial, recreational and aquaculture sectors. Information relevant to Fisheries WA's Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program is also provided. The report indicates that overall the major fish stocks which support fisheries in Western Australia continue to be in a reasonably healthy condition. Those species which are being harvested at levels …

A Historical Analysis Of Corporal Punishment In American Public Schools, Cathy A. Hanson Jun 1998

A Historical Analysis Of Corporal Punishment In American Public Schools, Cathy A. Hanson

Theses and Graduate Projects

This historical thesis analyzed information about corporal punishment in American public schools from the early 1900's to the present. This historical research study examined economic, social and political trends and explored the relationship they have with corporal punishment. The study examined children's behavioral expressions to which corporal punishment was designed to respond and evaluated the effectiveness of corporal punishment. The study found a relationship between students who live in poverty and displayed difficult behavioral expressions at school and the use of corporal punishment. Students who live in poverty experience corporal punishment in their school more often than their peers who …

The Snare Machinery Is Involved In Apical Plasma Membrane Trafficking In Mdck Cells, Seng Hui Low, Steven J. Chapin, Christian Wimmer, Sidney W. Whiteheart, László G. Kömüves, Keith E. Mostov, Thomas Weimbs Jun 1998

The Snare Machinery Is Involved In Apical Plasma Membrane Trafficking In Mdck Cells, Seng Hui Low, Steven J. Chapin, Christian Wimmer, Sidney W. Whiteheart, László G. Kömüves, Keith E. Mostov, Thomas Weimbs

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We have investigated the controversial involvement of components of the SNARE (soluble N-ethyl maleimide–sensitive factor [NSF] attachment protein [SNAP] receptor) machinery in membrane traffic to the apical plasma membrane of polarized epithelial (MDCK) cells. Overexpression of syntaxin 3, but not of syntaxins 2 or 4, caused an inhibition of TGN to apical transport and apical recycling, and leads to an accumulation of small vesicles underneath the apical plasma membrane. All other tested transport steps were unaffected by syntaxin 3 overexpression. Botulinum neurotoxin E, which cleaves SNAP-23, and antibodies against α-SNAP inhibit both TGN to apical and basolateral transport in …

Habitat Conservation Plan For Utah Prairie Dogs In Iron County, Utah, Iron County Commission, Utah Division Of Wildlife Resources Jun 1998

Habitat Conservation Plan For Utah Prairie Dogs In Iron County, Utah, Iron County Commission, Utah Division Of Wildlife Resources

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Utah prairie dog is a federally threatened species that occurs only in southwestern Utah. A large proportion (65%) of the total population of Utah prairie dogs occurs in Iron County, and a high percentage (86%) of those (2,456/2,843 in 1997) occur on privately owned lands. Population growth in Iron County has averaged more than 6% over the last five years, and is expected to continue at least at the same pace, and possibly as high as 10% (Colgan 1997). The increase in both residential and commercial development in Iron County has been the greatest in Cedar City, but has …

Simulation Of The Human Lung, Noah Syroid, Dwayne Westenskow, Volker E. Boehm Jun 1998

Simulation Of The Human Lung, Noah Syroid, Dwayne Westenskow, Volker E. Boehm

Utah Space Grant Consortium

A human lung simulator was implemented using a model based on the Fick principle. The simulator is designed to emulate C02 production and 02 consumption in the body and gas exchange in the lung. The implementation consists of hardware and software to control the flow of gases entering and leaving a ventilated test lung. An initial test of C02 production qualitatively demonstrated that the lung simulator behaved as expected. Since this project is in its initial stages, additional experimentation and model refinement is necessary for the simulator to accurately represent physiologic responses of a human lung.
