United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson
United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson
Master's Theses
From 1945 to 1949, Indonesian nationalists struggled for independence against their Dutch colonial rulers. For most of the period, American foreign policy favored the Netherlands in its desire to reign once again over the archipelago. American foreign policy strategy advocated a "Europe first" position, and possessed finite resources to contain Soviet expansion in the developing cold war. State Department policy planners sided with European powers as they attempted to resume the status quo ante in Southeast Asia following World War II. Colonies were considered essential to the recoveries of Western European powers economically, politically, and psychologically.
Continuity Of Emotions Across Pre-Sleep State And The Content Of Dreams, Teresa M. Picciocchi
Continuity Of Emotions Across Pre-Sleep State And The Content Of Dreams, Teresa M. Picciocchi
Master's Theses
The relationship between unmanipulated pre-sleep states and the affective composition of dreams was investigated. Sixty college students completed the State-Trait Personality Inventory (STPI) prior to retiring for the night and the Differential Emotion Scale {DES-IV) focusing upon any dream recalled upon awakening. In support of the Continuity Theory, which states that our personalities and experiences are reflected in our dreams, significant positive correlations were found between pre-sleep curiosity and the presence of interest in the dream, pre-sleep anger and anger in the dream and pre sleep depression and sadness within the dream. Support for the Day Residue effect was obtained …

The Lost Treasure Of Valencia: Fugitive Muslims From The Kingdom Of Valencia 1290-1410, Michael A. Ryan
The Lost Treasure Of Valencia: Fugitive Muslims From The Kingdom Of Valencia 1290-1410, Michael A. Ryan
Masters Theses
The fourteenth century, an epoch infamous for war, disease, famine, and devastation across the whole of Europe, also saw an increase in the number of fugitive Muslims from the Christian kingdom of Valencia. Due to the reconquest of Valencia in the thirteenth century, an immense Muslim populace found itself subject to a dominant Christian minority. These Muslims had been either enslaved outright for resisting the Christian domination, or had been placed into a semi-free status. The members of this latter group were known as the Mudejars, and like the Muslim slaves, fled when their social and political standings were in …

Experimental Brain Injury Induces Regionally Distinct Apoptosis During The Acute And Delayed Post-Traumatic Period, Alana C. Conti, Ramesh Raghupathi, John Q. Trojanowski, Tracy K. Mcintosh
Neurosurgery Faculty Publications
The temporal pattern of apoptosis in the adult rat brain after lateral fluid-percussion (FP) brain injury was characterized using terminal deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated biotindUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) histochemistry and agarose gel electrophoresis. Male Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to brain injury and killed for histological analysis at intervals from 12 hr to 2 months after injury (n = 3/time point). Sham (uninjured) controls were subjected to anesthesia with (n = 3) or without (n = 3) surgery. Apoptotic TUNEL-positive cells were defined using stringent morphological criteria including nuclear shrinkage and fragmentation and condensation of chromatin and cytoplasm. Double-labeled immunocytochemistry was performed …

Assessing Simulation Ecosystem Processes For Climate Variability Research At Glacier National Park, Joseph D. White, Steven W. Running, Peter Edmond Thornton, Robert E. Keane, Kevin C. Ryan, Daniel B. Fagre, Carl H. Key
Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications
Glacier National Park served as a test site for ecosystem analyses that involved a suite of integrated models embedded within a geographic information system. The goal of the exercise was to provide managers with maps that could illustrate probable shifts in vegetation, net primary production (NPP), and hydrologic responses associated with two selected climatic scenarios. The climatic scenarios were (a) a recent 12-yr record of weather data, and (b) a reconstituted set that sequentially introduced in repeated 3-yr intervals wetter–cooler, drier–warmer, and typical conditions. To extrapolate the implications of changes in ecosystem processes and resulting growth and distribution of vegetation …

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications
During the breeding season of 1995 we monitored the proportion of adult and subadult Snail Kites (Rostrhamus sociabilis) attempting to breed and the number of breeding attempts using radio telemetry. Our sample consisted of 23 adults (14 females, 9 males) and 9 subadults for which we had data over the entire breeding season. All adults attempted to breed at least once with an observed average of 1.4 (± 0.6 SD) breeding attempts per individual. In contrast, only 3 (33%) of the subadults attempted to breed. Of the adults, 15 (65%) made one breeding attempt, 7 (30%) made two …

Delectatio Et Utilitas In Hrotsvit Of Gandersheim's Resuscitatio Drusianae Et Calimachi, Mary Maxine Browne
Delectatio Et Utilitas In Hrotsvit Of Gandersheim's Resuscitatio Drusianae Et Calimachi, Mary Maxine Browne
Masters Theses
Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (935-1002 A.D.) wrote her play, Resuscitatio Drusianae et Calimachi, as the other five plays which Hrotsvit composed, as an adaptation of a hagiography from the apocryphal Acta Johannis. Written in the spirit of the tenth-century didactic esthetic delectatio et utilitas, Hrotsvit adapted the narrative of the legend to the Terentian comedic form, that she might instruct her monastic audience according to the delectatio et utilitas esthetic.
This discussion focuses on the sources and backgrounds of Hrotsvit's play, followed by Hrotsvit' s adaptive treatment of the characters in Resuscitatio Drusianae et Calimachi with a …
Mdma And Learning: Effects Of Acute And Neurotoxic Exposure, Thomas P. Byrne
Mdma And Learning: Effects Of Acute And Neurotoxic Exposure, Thomas P. Byrne
Dissertations
In two experiments, the effects of MDMA were examined on the acquisition of lever-press responding by rats exposed to procedures in which water delivery was delayed by 0, 10, or 20 seconds. In the first experiment, naive, water-deprived rats received an intraperitoneal injection of MDMA (0, 1.0, 3.2, or 5.6 mg/kg) prior to one experimental session. Response acquisition was observed under all conditions at all drug doses. MDMA increased both response rates and reinforcers earned in a dose-dependent fashion, but only when reinforcement was immediate. Under conditions of delay, MDMA had no effect on the number of lever presses emitted …

On Agent Communication In Large Groups, Gary R. Greenfield
On Agent Communication In Large Groups, Gary R. Greenfield
Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series
The problem is fundamental and natural, yet deep - to simulate the simplest possible form of communication that can occur within a large multi-agent system. It would be prohibitive to try and survey all of the research on "communication" in general so we must restrict our focus. We will devote our efforts to synthetic communication occurring within large groups. In particular, we would like to discover a model for communication that will serve as an abstract model, a prototype, for simulating communication within large groups of biological organisms.

A Computer/Tutorial System Compared With A Workbook/Tutorial System For Presenting Instructional Material To At-Risk Elementary School Students, Vincent O. Hodge
Dissertations
Two different ways of presenting instructional material and reacting to students’ responses were compared. One, taking advantage of several features of multimedia instruction involved a desktop computer and various computer-presented consequences of correct and incorrect responses (largely chosen by the student). The other consisted in presenting the same instructional materials (the SRA primary curriculum) in a workbook form with tutors' comments and praise as the main form of response consequence. The two methods were compared with respect to various measures of student and system performance, including student accuracy (percent correct responses), types of errors, amount of correct response repetition (over-responding), …
Laterality Of The Perception Of Computer Presented Written Sexual Words By Right-Handed Males And Females, Randall W. Stewart
Laterality Of The Perception Of Computer Presented Written Sexual Words By Right-Handed Males And Females, Randall W. Stewart
Dissertations
The right hemisphere of males has been shown to possess a greater capacity for accurate perception of emotional non-verbal material (pictures) than the left hemisphere. The same is true for females, but with a smaller difference between the two hemispheres. Some previous research has partially confirmed these relationships using tachistoscopic presentation of emotional words. The present study, using briefly exposed computerpresented sexual words, compared perception accuracy with respect to a sexuality rating of clearly sexual and clearly non-sexual words, in the right versus the left visual field, and with males versus females. As with previous research using verbal stimuli, the …

Sense Of Belonging As Perceived By Two Third Grade Students., Laura Foix
Student Work
This study investigated the sense of belonging as perceived by two third grade students. Two informants in a small midwestem public school were used in this qualitative study. Data was collected through interviews, observations, informant journals, and a researcher reflection journal. It was discovered that these informants believe that a sense of humor, class participation, compliments, and non-verbal facial expressions contribute to a child feeling a sense of belonging in the classroom. Further research needs to be completed to determine other factors that contribute to a child’s sense of belonging in the classroom, as well as other settings within the …

Cd4(+) T Cells Tolerized Ex Vivo To Host Alloantigen By Anti-Cd40 Ligand (Cd40l:Cd154) Antibody Lose Their Graft-Versus-Host Disease Lethality Capacity But Retain Nominal Antigen Responses., Bruce R. Blazar, Patricia A. Taylor, Randolph J. Noelle, Daniel A. Vallera
Dartmouth Scholarship
A major goal of the transplant field is to tolerize donor T cells to prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) (1). We describe an ex vivo approach in which the blockade of CD40 ligand (CD40L:CD154):CD40 interactions, a pathway required for optimal T cell expansion, induces donor CD4(+) T cells to become tolerant to host alloantigens (2). High doses of tolerized cells did not cause GVHD lethality in vivo. T cells had intact responses to antigens not present during tolerization. Tolerance was long lived and not readily reversible in vivo. These data have significant implications for the use of tolerization approaches to prevent …

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles
The article discusses financial reporting issues raised by the U. S. corporations in the increasing use of the Internet. The Internet is affecting traditional statements and audits as companies explore online options. Financial information is now easily available online, creating a new readership. CPAs must consider how to help make this information useful to the expanded public. Companies need to identify who will use their sites and provide appropriate features. Search engines help users connect information from all over a given Web site. Analysts may want to download financials into spreadsheets.
Writing Center Practices In Tennessee Community Colleges, James E. Crawford
Writing Center Practices In Tennessee Community Colleges, James E. Crawford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to develop a profile of writing centers in twelve community colleges governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. This profile included how they were established, how they are funded and staffed, what services are provided and to whom, how training is provided for staff, and how technology is incorporated. More important than the profile itself, however, was an analysis of successful and unsuccessful practices, especially those related to governance, structure, and training of staff, as revealed through the perceptions and experiences of writing center directors. Because electronic technology has transformed the craft of writing, …

In Vitro Assessment Of The Toxicity Of Cocaine And Its Metabolites In The Human Umbilical Artery, Tessa L. Long
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An in vitro model was used to assess the effect of cocaine and its metabolites on the umbilical artery. Objectives were to pharmacologically confirm the presence of adrenergic innervation using tyramine, evaluate the ability of cocaine, benzoylecgonine, norcocaine and cocaethylene to potentiate vasoconstriction by serotonin and norepinephrine, examine the ability of ketanserin to block the enhanced vasoconstriction produced by cocaine, and determine displacement of 3 H-ketanserin by serotonin, norepinephrine, tyramine and mianserin. The vasoconstrictive effect of tyramine (100 μM) was enhanced in the presence of cocaine by 257%. Vasoconstrictive effects of serotonin and norepinephrine were significantly enhanced by cocaine by …
Perceptions Of Corporate Crime: Assessing The Seriousness, Dale J. Ardovini-Brooker
Perceptions Of Corporate Crime: Assessing The Seriousness, Dale J. Ardovini-Brooker
Masters Theses
Many studies have been done concerning the seriousness of traditional street crime. There is a need in the field of criminology to expand our knowledge about how serious corporate crimes are. A key feature of seriousness is how researchers measure it. Using a survey, I analyzed people's perceptions of corporate crime. I had the respondents indicate the seriousness of the crime and harm by using a Likert Scale as well as identifying the appropriate sanction/sentence for the company convicted of the crime. This proved useful in attempting to identify how seriousness is measured by the sanctions/sentences imposed by the respondents. …

The Treatment Utility Of The Arousal Predisposition Scale In Predicting The Outcome Of Exposure Therapy With Small Animal Phobias, Ellen I. Koch
Masters Theses
This study evaluated the effectiveness of an in vivo, one-session exposure procedure modified from that described by Lars-Goran Ost for the treatment of small animal phobias. This study also assessed the ability of the Arousal Predisposition Scale to predict treatment outcome. Subjects received treatment for snake, spider, rat, mouse, or crawling insect phobia. Three groups were utilized (treatment, phobic control and non-phobic control). The treatment session included both behavioral and self-report measures of anxiety. Almost all treatment subjects showed dramatic improvement on both of these types of measures during posttest and one-month follow-up. The treatment and non-phobic control groups were …

Method Engineering For Web Information Systems Development: Challenges And Issues, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite the rapid advancement of technology in the last few decades, accurate, on-time, and on-budget completion of information systems development projects is still a vision rather than a reality. The software crisis is still very much alive almost forty years after it was first defined. The sudden popularity of Internet and electronic commerce pose a new challenge to the software engineering community. With the increasing importance of electronic commerce and $3 billion in sales expected to take place over cyberspace by the year 2000, organizations will be competing to design and develop web-based applications. However, existing information modeling methods might …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Stage conversion between bradyzoites and tachyzoites was investigated in C57BL/6 mice chronically infected with the ME-49 strain of Toxoplasma gondii. In order to promote bradyzoite-tachyzoite conversion, mice were treated in vivo with neutralizing doses of anti-gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) or anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) antibodies. Expression of parasite-specific antigens SAG-1, SAG-2, and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp-70) was visualized in the central nervous system by immunocytochemistry and measured by photometric assay. The immunosuppressive effect of anti-IFN-gamma or anti-TNF-alpha treatment was immediate, leading to parasite stage conversion as indicated by the increased expression of tachyzoite-specific antigens (SAG-1 and SAG-2) and by …
