Gender-Specific Protection From Microvessel Rarefaction In Female Hypertensive Rats, Paula E. Papanek, Mark J. Rieder, Julian H. Lombard, Andrew S. Greene
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Epidemiologic studies reveal that women have a significantly lower age-adjusted morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease than men, suggesting that gender is a cardiovascular disease risk factor. The mechanism of the “gender protection” is unknown. In this study, we investigated the microvascular remodeling in reduced renal mass plus a high salt (4.0% NaCl) diet model of hypertension (RRM + HS). We hypothesized that women would be protected from the increase in blood pressure and from the microvascular rarefaction associated with RRM + HS hypertension. Studies were designed to determine whether female rats were less susceptible to changes in microvessel density …

Locating Traitorous Identities: Toward A View Of Privilege-Cognizant White Character, Alison Bailey
Locating Traitorous Identities: Toward A View Of Privilege-Cognizant White Character, Alison Bailey
Faculty Publications - Philosophy
I address the problem of how to locate “traitorous” subjects, or those who belong to dominant groups yet resist the usual assumptions and practices of those groups. I argue that Sandra Harding’s description of traitors us insiders, who “become marginal” is misleading. Crafting a distinction between “privilege-cognizant” and “privilege-evasive” white scripts, I offer an alternative account of race traitors as privilege-cognizant whites who refuse to animate expected whitely scripts, and who are unfaithful to worldviews whites are expected to hold.
Factors Influences Adolescents' Choice And Discontinuation Of Depo-Provera, Carey E. Mccarter
Factors Influences Adolescents' Choice And Discontinuation Of Depo-Provera, Carey E. Mccarter
MSN Research Projects
Long-term contraceptives are a needed measure for prevention of unintended pregnancies. Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera), a long-term injectable contraceptive, is particularly useful for adolescent women. Despite the widespread use of Depo- Provera, limited data exist in the literature on continuation rates, especially among adolescents. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the factors which influence the choice and discontinuation of Depo-Provera among adolescents. The Health Belief Model served as the theoretical framework to guide this study. The convenience sample consisted of adolescent females (N = 14) . The instrument utilized for the collection of data was the McCarter …

Radiocarbon From Nuclear Testing Applied To Age Validation Of Black Drum, Pogonias Cromis, Steven E. Campana, Cynthia M. Jones
OES Faculty Publications
Radiocarbon ((14)C) in the world's oceans increased sharply between 1950 and 1970 as a result of the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. Through comparison with the (14)C time series reconstructed from atmospheric measurements and marine carbonates, Kalish, in 1993, used the (14)C concentration measured in fish otolith cores as a means of confirming the annulus-based age estimates for some South Pacific fish species. Here we report the pre-and postbomb (14)C chronology of North Atlantic adult black drum (Pogonias cronis), assumed to be between 15 and 42 yr of age on the basis of otolith annulus counts. According to …

Lewis Winfield Davis was born February 7, 1914 in Auburn, Maine to Wilbur and Gertrude Davis. His father worked for a bank and his mother was a housewife. A science scholar, Lewis graduated from Bates College in 1936 with a B.S. in Chemistry and Physics and later went to MIT and Northeastern University. He worked as a researcher for most of his life for General Electric and then Metal Hydrides. He became president of Metal Hydrides, Inc. in 1970 after many years as a chemist and manager. While there, Lewis worked on Uranium with Einstein to help produce the world’s …

Flight Of The Vampire: Ontogenetic Gait-Transition In Vampyroteuthis Infernalis (Cephalopoda: Vampyromorpha), Brad A. Seibel, Erik V. Thuesen, James J. Childress
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Vampyroteuthis infernalis is a cosmopolitan cephalopod that lives in the oxygen minimum layer between 600 and 800 m depth. Morphometric and physiological studies have indicated that V. infernalis has little capacity for jet propulsion and has the lowest metabolic rate ever measured for a cephalopod. Because fin swimming is inherently more efficient than jet propulsion, some of the reduction in energy usage relative to other cephalopods may result from the use of fins as the primary means of propulsion. V. infernalis undergoes a rapid metamorphosis which consists of changes in the position, size and shape of the fins. This …
