Final Report For The Onion Creek Recharge Project Northern Hays County, Texas, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District
Final Report For The Onion Creek Recharge Project Northern Hays County, Texas, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
Abstract The presence of nonpoint source pollution in stormwater flowing in Onion Creek can have a direct impact on water quality in the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer in Hays County, Texas. To address this concern, the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District constructed a concrete vault over the entrance to Antioch Cave in the bed of Onion Creek in 1997. This structure was designed to prevent entry into the cave of contaminated stormwater by closure of a valve on the vault during storm events. The goals of the current project were to improve the efficiency of the system …

Cytoplasmic Assembly And Accumulation Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Types 1 And 2 In Recombinant Human Colony-Stimulating Factor-1-Treated Human Monocytes: An Ultrastructural Study, Jan Marc Orenstein, Monte S. Meltzer, Terri Phipps, Howard Gendelman
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Recombinant human colony-stimulating factor-1-treated human peripheral blood-derived monocytes-macrophages are efficient host cells for recovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from blood leukocytes of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. These cells can be maintained as viable monolayers for intervals exceeding 3 months. Infection with HIV resulted in virus-induced cytopathic effects, accompanied by relatively high levels of released progeny virus, followed by a prolonged low-level release of virus from morphologically normal cells. In both acutely and chronically infected monocytes, viral particles were seen budding into and accumulating within cytoplasmic vacuoles. The number of intravacuolar virions far exceeded those associated with the …

European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were brought to the United States from Europe. They were released in New York City in 1890 and 1891 and, since that time, have spread across the country. They were observed in the midwest by 1930, in Colorado in 1939, and in California in 1942. The starling population in the United States has since grown to an estimated 140 million birds. Starlings are frequently considered pests because of the damage they cause, especially to agriculture and in urban roosts. This publication provides facts about starlings and methods to control their damage in agriculture.

Certain forms of the heavy metals arsenic and chromium are considered human carcinogens, although they are believed to act through very different mechanisms. Chromium(VI) is believed to act as a classic and mutagenic agent, and DNA/chromatin appears to be the principal target for its effects. In contrast, arsenic(III) is considered nongenotoxic, but is able to target specific cellular proteins, principally through sulfhydryl interactions. We had previously shown that various genotoxic chemical carcinogens, including chromium (VI), preferentially altered expression of several inducible genes but had little or no effect on constitutive gene expression. We were therefore interested in whether these carcinogenic …
