Effects Of Peer-Mediated Instructional Mnemonic Modeling Strategies On Learning Geographic Locations By Sixth-Grade Social Studies Students., Kimberly Bryan Jennings
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study was designed to examine the effects of peer-mediated instructional mnemonic modeling strategies on learning geographic locations by sixth-grade social studies students. Experimental and control group scores, time-based memory retention, structural level of intervention, and experimental group attitudes were analyzed following the 10-week study. One teacher and 84 sixth-grade social studies students participated in the study. Experimental group students experienced peer-mediated mnemonic modeling activities during their regularly scheduled social studies classes while the control group received traditional geographic instruction only, which involved participation in the map outlining instructional process. Peer models were trained by the teacher as to the …

Perimenopause: A Phenomenological Study Of Women And Health Care Providers In Rural Areas., Patricia Ann Kraft
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using a four step phenomenological approach for inquiry, the researcher explored and interpreted data obtained from the lived experiences of sixteen perimenopausal women and eight health care providers living in rural areas. A purposive sampling technique was utilized. Participation was on a voluntary basis. Data collection procedures included a face-to-face semi-structured taped interview and completion of a demographic questionnaire. Following analysis of the data, twenty-two common essences were identified from intuiting of the interview data. These essences were classified into six major themes which integrated all the realities of the participants. The findings of the study revealed six major themes …

Racism And Racial Categorization., J Blascovich, Na Wyer, La Swart, Jl Kibler
School of Psychology
Social identity theory predicts that perceivers strongly identified with an in-group will maximize the distinction and maintain a clear boundary between their own and other groups by categorizing others' membership accurately. Two experiments tested the prediction that racially prejudiced individuals, who presumably identify highly with their racial in-group, are more motivated to make accurate racial categorizations than nonprejudiced individuals. Results indicated that prejudiced participants not only took longer to categorize race-ambiguous targets (Experiments 1 and 2), but also made more nonverbal vocalizations when presented with them (Experiment 1), suggesting response hesitation. The results support the hypothesis that, compared to nonprejudiced …
"Prescriptive Equality": Two Steps Forward, Kent Greenawalt
"Prescriptive Equality": Two Steps Forward, Kent Greenawalt
Faculty Scholarship
In this Response to Professor Peters, Professor Greenawalt argues that prescriptive equality does have meaningful normative force. Prescriptive equality plays a reinforcing role when it agrees with nonegalitarian justice and is not incoherent when it pulls against nonegalitarian justice. Specifically, when one individual has been treated better than is required by nonegalitarian justice, a similarly situated and significantly related individual who is aware of that treatment may merit equivalent treatment because of widespread and deep-seated feelings about equality.
How Should Religion And Science Be Creatively Related? A Christian Perspective, Robert John Russell
How Should Religion And Science Be Creatively Related? A Christian Perspective, Robert John Russell
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
Each of us, Hindu and Christian alike, must seek each other's wisdom on one of the fundamental issues of our time: how should we relate religion and science? On the one hand, each of us has been formed and shaped by, and has inherited the wisdom and blessing of one of the world's great religions, and we should be committed to the dialogue between, and the mutual enrichment of, these religions. Through these religions, we are invited to practise compassion, to seek justice, to obtain enlightenment, to live in harmony with the natural world, and to find healing, forgiveness, and …

A Review Of Tbi And Return To Work, Anne Berg
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Approximately two million traumatic brain injuries occur every year and of those 70,000 to 90,000 individuals develop disabilities which prevent a normal independent lifestyle. The typical individual afflicted is a 20 year old male with a normal life expectancy who is likely to face a lifetime of unemployment and dependency on public assistance if post-acute rehabilitation services are not provided. There is a lack of vocational programs and very limited funding available. This literature review will begin to fill the void of information regarding return to work programs by examining the return to work rate, specific return to work programs, …

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Burnout is a serious concern in today's world, especially in the educational setting. Burnout not only affects the individual physically and emotionally, but it can also affect the work place. More specifically it can lead to increased absenteeism, job turnover, and other work associated withdrawal behaviors. Furthermore, burnout has the potential of affecting many other people above and beyond that individual who is burned out.
At this time, new physical therapy programs continue to be developed across the United States, although there is already a limited number of faculty in the physical therapy field. Therefore, due to the physical therapy …

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects approximately 7600 to 11000 people per year, and alters every aspect of the individuals' lives. SCI primarily affects young Caucasian adults. The majority are between 16 to 30 years old, with the average age being 19. Motor vehicle accidents account for 35% to 40% of SCI cases reported, with violence in close second at 25%. Currently, the highest neurological category is of complete paraplegia followed by incomplete quadriplegia. SCIs often cause many complications due to decreased physical activity and changes in bodily functions.
Among treatment options, functional electrical stimulation (FES) is used to restore a …

Mechanical Biofeedback For Treatment Of Female Urinary Incontinence, Rhonda J. Salentiny
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Urinary incontinence (UI), the involuntary loss of urine so severe as to have social and/or hygienic consequences, is becoming a medical diagnosis for which patients are referred to physical therapy. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 million American adults suffer from UI. Conservative treatment including physical therapy is sought for UI because of its superior cure rate compared to surgical intervention.
The purpose of this study is to educate its readers on the types, anatomy, physiology, and conservative treatments of UI. Most importantly, however, is the understanding of how pelvic floor exercises (PFE) with use of mechanical biofeedback …
Child Abuse And Its Implications For Physical Therapists, Tanya Surdez
Child Abuse And Its Implications For Physical Therapists, Tanya Surdez
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Child abuse has existed for many centuries, but has only recently been recognized as a serious social problem. Child abuse affects millions of children each year from all income, racial and ethnic groups; thereby affecting society as a whole. Many studies have shown the devastating psychological, social, cognitive and physical effects of child abuse. There are a limited number of studies that demonstrate the role of physical therapists in working with victims of abuse. It is necessary that therapists learn to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse and know the appropriate action to take.
The purpose of this study is …

A Visual Teaching Aid For A Pediatric Aquatic Physical Therapy Program, Saundi Wilson
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Aquatic therapy is quickly becoming a popular form of treatment in pediatric physical therapy. The unique properties of water allow children with disabilities to exercise and experience movement that they are often unable to experience on land. Despite the numerous benefits of aquatic therapy, few resources are available which visually demonstrate suggestions for the use of this form of treatment. A visual teaching aid would provide students and professionals in physical therapy with exposure to aquatic therapy treatment techniques with a pediatric population.
The purpose of this study will be to research and review the literature regarding aquatic therapy and …
Management Of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome By Physical Therapy: An Outcome Study, Jouni Zidbeck
Management Of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome By Physical Therapy: An Outcome Study, Jouni Zidbeck
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a disorder caused by compression of the brachial nerve plexus or subclavian artery or vein as they pass through a potentially limited space in the anterolateral neck and proximal shoulder. An individual with a predisposition for TOS due to his or her anatomy may have an onset of symptoms due to many different etiologies including acute injury and prolonged postural abnormalities. Although conservative management by physical therapy cannot replace surgery in severe or complicated cases of TOS, it is, nevertheless, the recommended first treatment choice. The purpose of this study was to assess the success …

A Literature Review Of Alcohol Abuse And Dependence, Julie R. Vaughan
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Alcohol abuse and/or dependence poses significant risks to a person's health. The negative effects and consequences of alcohol abuse and/or dependence has been well documented in the literature. Many people who are either alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent are admitted to hospitals with neurological deficits, medical complications and traumatic injuries. Often times an etiology related to alcohol abuse is ignored.
This population may be referred to physical therapy for rehabilitation. Functional outcomes and compliance are often unsatisfactory with this population. A better understanding of alcohol abuse and/or dependence could help identify persons at risk and improve functional outcomes.
The purpose …

Headache Intervention: A Nonpharmacologic Approach To The Treatment Of Tension-Type Headaches, Marty D. Mohr
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Headaches have long been a problem for many people with hundreds of thousands seeking medical attention for their head pain each year. Migraine and tension-type are by far the most common forms of headaches, but from a physical therapy standpoint, the literature indicates that tension-type headaches respond better from the services provided by a therapist. The objective of this literature review will be to examine the different nonpharmacologic physical therapy approaches to the treatment of tension-type headaches. The techniques to be examined will include spinal manipulation, traditional physical therapy, electro acupuncture, and biofeedback and relaxation training. Examination of the literature …
Eating Disorders And Their Relevance To The Health Professional, Tammy L. Surdez
Eating Disorders And Their Relevance To The Health Professional, Tammy L. Surdez
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have become more prevalent among young people in our society. This rising pursuit of thinness can be attributed, in part, to our society's idealistic view of beauty and appeal, in addition to several other causal factors. Adolescents and young adults struggle to meet the unrealistic demands of society, often resorting to potentially fatal behaviors such as starvation, binging, and purging. These disorders often present with identifiable signs and symptoms. As health professionals, we must be prepared to identify these characteristic signs and symptoms in order to identify patients who are at …

A Literature Review And Introductory Pediatric Aquatic Therapy Manual, Dena Wright
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Aquatic therapy continues to grow as an acceptable and often times preferable means of achieving therapeutic goals across a variety of patient populations: pediatric to geriatric, orthopedic to neurologic. The unique properties of water allow people to exercise and to recover in a safe and relaxing environment that promotes similar goals to those on land. However, land exercises can not simply be performed in water due to the water's unique properties. Similarly, exercises for adults do not work as effectively for children. Many physical therapy programs across the nation provide only minimal instruction on aquatic or pediatric therapy as a …

Acupuncture And Pain: A Critical Analysis Of Current Research, Ryan K. Kuwahara
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Acupuncture as a treatment for pain relief has recently gained popularity in the United States despite the lack of substantial clinical proof of its analgesic effect. In the recent past there have been several reviews of the clinical studies on acupuncture's analgesic efficacy, all of which have demanded that future studies have more appropriate outcome measures, better design, and have proper credibility assessment. The present study critically analyzed the published literature over the past decade to see if the latest acupuncture studies provide a more definitive answer regarding acupuncture's efficacy. Analysis revealed that recent studies do not provide any more …
