The Development Of Baseball Umpires' Uniforms, 1846-1996, Elizabeth K. Martin Jan 1997

The Development Of Baseball Umpires' Uniforms, 1846-1996, Elizabeth K. Martin

Open Access Master's Theses

Organized baseball games, from 1846 on, required the services of one or more umpires to enforce the rules of play. The umpire's formality of dress helped to establish his authority by distinguishing him from both the players and the spectators. Throughout the one hundred and fifty year period of this study the umpire remained one of the most formally and conservatively dressed men at the ball park.

For the first quarter-century of modern baseball, umpires were amateurs who wore their customary clothing when asked to officiate. This consisted of a frock coat, top hat, white linen and matched or contrasting-colored …

The Stability Of Wisc-Iii Scores: For Whom Are Triennial Re-Evaluations Necessary?, Linda C. Cassidy

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated the long-term stability of Verbal, Performance and Full Scale IQ scores for a sample of exceptional children evaluated with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-ill) as part of the mandated three-year reevaluation process. Archival data were collected from the special education files of 592 children who were administered the WISC-ill on two separate occasions between September, 1992 and June, 1996 from twenty-seven school districts in a small New England State. Several variables (special education classification, Full Scale IQ score at initial administration, age of participant at initial administration, as well as the ethnicity and gender …

Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi Jan 1997

Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi

Open Access Dissertations

The main focus of the study was the construction of a new scale for measuring religiosity among Muslims. Two other existing scales were also used. Utilizing 169 (108 male, 61 female) Saudi Arabian Muslim college students, an exploratory Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was employed on a set of questionnaire items intended to measure Islamic religiosity. Six components were extracted, which represented the religious dimensions of practice, societal value of religion, belief in central tenets, personal need for religion, reliance on practical guidance, and unquestioning acceptance.

Predictions regarding multidimensionality of Muslim religiosity were generally supported. However, the PCA-based scales developed in …

A Quantitative And Qualitative Assessment Of Adolescent Hiv-Risk Predictors, Michelle A. Lang

Open Access Dissertations

HIV-risk was assessed, and staged by the Transtheoretical Model, among 239 adolescents, ages 13-19 (mean age 15), with a 163-item self-administered questionnaire, supplemented with qualitative data from 28 focus groups. Thirteen psychometrically reliable scales were isolated and validated with 457 youth pooled from previous samples: factual, transmission, and perceived AIDS knowledge, misconceptions, perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, homophobia, substance use and abuse, communication assertiveness, condom use assertiveness, and risk histories for self and partner(s). AIDS risk was defined by frequency of unprotected occasions and number of intercourse partners. Sexual activity was indicated by 54 percent of the sample. Young men reported significantly …

Leadership Within The Camps : A Study Of Holocaust Resistance, Meredith Ann Fallon Jan 1997

Leadership Within The Camps : A Study Of Holocaust Resistance, Meredith Ann Fallon

Honors Theses

The primary question underlying my research is, "What environmental factors, individual characteristics, behaviors, beliefs, and socialization factors enabled or ignited certain Jews to emerge as leaders within the concentration camps during WW II?" This study could reveal valuable information concerning why, how, and what types of leaders emerge in highly adverse and life threatening situations, and how some of these leaders were able to achieve success.

Why Teams? : Assessing The Incorporation And Development Of Teams At J.P. Morgan's Delaware Private Client Group-Operations, Christine M. Wang

Honors Theses

J.P. Morgan Services, Inc. implemented teams into its Private Client Group-Operations (PCG-Ops) located in Wilmington, Delaware during the summer of 1996, in an initiative the company called Realignment. The goal of my senior project is to explore the use of teams in corporate settings. By assessing how consistent the Private Client Group's Realignment initiative is with the current team development, organizational change, and organizational development literature. In this project four main concepts will be examined:

l . The reasons why JP Morgan changed from a traditional hierarchical structure to one that is team based.

2. The results of the six …

Amazight Identity In The Post Colonial Moroccan State: A Case Study In Ethnicity, Morag E. Boyd Jan 1997

Amazight Identity In The Post Colonial Moroccan State: A Case Study In Ethnicity, Morag E. Boyd

Honors Papers

This study will demonstrate that the Amazight are a distinct ethnic group in Morocco, despite the common interpretation in scholarly and everyday discourse that they are merely groups of people speaking one of the Amazight language and not representing a distinct cultural entity. The study will go on to examine the ramifications of this ethnic identity and the heritage of the historical and tribal roots of the Amazight in light of nationalism, state building, ethnicity, and cultural marginalization.

Advertising Beliefs And Attitudes: Are Students And General Consumers Indeed Different?, Srinivas Durvasula, Subhash Mehta, J. Craig Andrews, Steven Lysonski Jan 1997

Advertising Beliefs And Attitudes: Are Students And General Consumers Indeed Different?, Srinivas Durvasula, Subhash Mehta, J. Craig Andrews, Steven Lysonski

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Studies of advertising beliefs and attitudes are crucial because these measures are shown to affect brand attitudes and purchase intentions. Previous studies in this area used either student or general consumers samples; no comparisons were made between the two groups. Therefore, it is not known whether and to what extent responses of student samples are likely to differ from those of general consumers. Differences would indicate that the two segments view advertising dissimilarly. However, by applying covariance structure analysis on a sample of students and a sample of general consumers from India, our study found no significant differences between them …

The Effects Of Practice On Auditory Vigilance Task Performance, Kristen A. Mckiernan Jan 1997

The Effects Of Practice On Auditory Vigilance Task Performance, Kristen A. Mckiernan

Open Access Master's Theses

To determine the effects of practice on auditory vigilance task performance, twenty-eight individuals completed five sessions of testing of auditory Continuous Performance Tests (CPTs). Two types of computerized CPTs were employed, a cognitive task using letters of the alphabet as stimuli, and a sensory task using tones as stimuli. Each participant heard either the letter or the tone task daily for five days and additionally heard the other task on the first and last day. Participants responded to targets, which were two immediately successive stimuli that were exactly the same, by pressing a button connected to the computer. Both tasks …

Development And Validation Of Decisional Balance And Processes Of Change Inventories For Heavy, Episodic Drinking, Jason Edward Maddock Jan 1997

Development And Validation Of Decisional Balance And Processes Of Change Inventories For Heavy, Episodic Drinking, Jason Edward Maddock

Open Access Master's Theses

The transtheoretical model of behavior change indicates that people who successfully change problem behaviors move through a series of stages of readiness to change. This model has been successfully applied to a wide range of health-related behaviors, but only limited work has been devoted to adapting this model to the cessation of heavy episodic drinking. The goals of the study were to develop measures of two of the key constructs of the model: a decisional balance inventory measuring the pros and cons of alcohol consumption and a processes of change instrument assessing techniques used to change heavy drinking behavior.

Three …

A Comparison Of Continuous Performance Tasks Using Cognitive Versus Sensory Stimuli, Nancy J. Reeve Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Continuous Performance Tasks Using Cognitive Versus Sensory Stimuli, Nancy J. Reeve

Open Access Master's Theses

A comparison of continuous performance tasks (CPTs) using cognitive versus sensory stimuli was undertaken to compare vigilance performance on analogous verbal and non-verbal tasks in normal, young adults. Eighty-nine introductory psychology students, screened for head injury, neurological deficits, and medication and substance use performed two versions of an auditory, computerized CPT. In the verbal task, stimuli were letters of the alphabet, whereas in the non-verbal task, they were tones of the major diatonic scale. During each 15 min task, 1200 stimuli were presented at an onset -to-onset time of0 .75 sec. A total of 100 targets was presented in semi-random …

An Exploratory Analysis Of The Relationship Of Leaders’ Gender To Multiple Aspects Of Organizational Functioning In Community Coalitions, Ilene Klein Jan 1997

An Exploratory Analysis Of The Relationship Of Leaders’ Gender To Multiple Aspects Of Organizational Functioning In Community Coalitions, Ilene Klein

Open Access Master's Theses

This study explored the relationship of leaders' gender to multiple aspects of organizational functioning. It focused on perceptions of leadership style (the extent to which leaders were task focused and interpersonally focused), social climate of the groups (inclusion/cohesion of the group and the task focus of the group), and specific characteristics of the group members (member satisfaction with the group and member commitment to the group).

Data were collected from members of 32 substance abuse prevention task forces across the state of Rhode Island, (N = 180). The independent variable of leaders' gender in this study was defined as a …

Errors In Scoring Objective Personality Tests, Gregory Allard Jan 1997

Errors In Scoring Objective Personality Tests, Gregory Allard

Open Access Master's Theses

Scoring objective personality tests is considered clerical, and presumably, straightforward in nature. This may be the reason that few studies, if any, have investigated the impact of scoring error on widely used tests, such as the MMPI or 801. Errors, even if infrequent (e.g. as few as 1% of tests), may adversely affect many hundreds or thousands of tests administered annually, however. In a study of three popular tests taken from three independent settings, this study found that the interpretation of popular tests are vulnerable even to small errors (i.e., 1 or 2 misscored items per test). This study explored …

Maternal-Infant Interaction In Infants With Colic, Lynne M. Andreozzi Jan 1997

Maternal-Infant Interaction In Infants With Colic, Lynne M. Andreozzi

Open Access Master's Theses

The experience of having an infant with colic may affect early interactions between the mother and infant. The present study investigated infant - mother interaction in infants with colic, excessive crying, and non-colic controls and their mothers. The Colic Symptom Checklist was used to identify infants between 4-6 weeks of age with colic (N=18), excessive crying (N=9), and controls without crying problems (N=13). The subjects were healthy, full-term normal infants recruited through pediatric referral. There were no differences between the three groups of infants for infant medical or family demographic characteristics. Face-to-face interaction was used to describe the caregiver's behavior, …

Public Playgrounds: An Examination Of Current Issues Associated With Public Play Facilities, Albert V. Ranaldi Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

The issues surrounding playgrounds are in need of attention. This research paper attempts to address the safety and developmental concerns regarding playground equipment and design. Since the most immediate concern is safety, the discussion will focus on issues concerning playground safety. A brief history of playground development, developmental theories of play, and safety issues will be presented. Discussion of these issues will lead to recommendations for a mandatory public playground safety policy and program. The standards for the safety policy and program will be adopted from the 1991 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Handbook For Public Playground Safety, the 1993 …

Planning In Controversy A Case Study, Roseann Hegarty Cronan Jan 1997

Planning In Controversy A Case Study, Roseann Hegarty Cronan

Open Access Master's Theses

Practicing planners are facing an increasing number of professional and ethical dilemmas in their professional lives. As public servants, both elected officials and professionals have been forced to become more responsive to the public demand and attitudes. As a result, many of the values influential in the past have been reassessed (Thomas, 1991).

On August 29, 1994, the governor of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations announced a compact for an Indian sponsored gambling casino in the town of West Greenwich, Rhode Island. The compact was subject to both local and statewide approval. The referendum would take place …

Enhancing Social Service To At-Risk Children, James Paglia Jan 1997

Enhancing Social Service To At-Risk Children, James Paglia

Open Access Master's Theses

The Children, Youth & Families Issue Group, part of the University of Rhode Island's Cooperative Extension Service, has provided education outreach and technical assistance to community based social service providers since 1990. In an effort to enhance the effectiveness of the programming which they provide the group initiated a research project designed to illuminate strategies for increasing the effectiveness of community-based service provision. This study uses the theory of developmental contextualism as presented by Dr. Richard Lerner to suggest ways in which service providers can enhance their effectiveness by understanding the particular context of their community.

The study focuses on …

Evaluating Urban Enterprise Zones As A Policy For Inner-City Minority Communities, Beth Ashman Collins Jan 1997

Evaluating Urban Enterprise Zones As A Policy For Inner-City Minority Communities, Beth Ashman Collins

Open Access Master's Theses

Can enterprise zones have any long-term effects on the economic status of minority populations or on the concentration of poverty in urban neighborhoods? This question was tackled from two perspectives. First, do enterprise zone interventions make sense in the context of existing models of racial inequality and ghetto development. Second, do the existing literature and evaluation studies provide evidence that enterprise zones are benefiting the urban poor in general and poor minorities in particular?

This study examines five selected official evaluations of state enterprise zone programs looking at how incentives are targeted toward specific populations and places and whether benefits …

Encoding And Decoding Of Meaning In Social Behavior, Mary Seburn Jan 1997

Encoding And Decoding Of Meaning In Social Behavior, Mary Seburn

McNair Scholars Journal

In an effort to further the understanding of social action, we explored the processes by which people interpret or understand the meaning of social behaviors, and also how social behaviors are constructed when people wish to communicate a specific meaning in a social action . This involved two phases. First, participants gene rated behaviors that expressed a given set of semantic features. These were then rated by a second group of participants on scales representing the dimensions of dominance and affiliation as a measure of accuracy. The second phase investigated the process by which meaning is derived from a social …

Freud's Jewish Science And Lacan's Sinthome, David Metzger Jan 1997

Freud's Jewish Science And Lacan's Sinthome, David Metzger

English Faculty Publications

In chapter nine of Seminar XVII, Lacan writes that the position of the analyst cannot be separated from Jewish history (158). More particularly, the invention of analytic discourse is part and parcel of a Hebraic tradition--represented by the Book of Hosea--in which one's god underscores the fact that even if everyone is speaking (let's say about sexual knowledge) this does not mean everyone is saying something. One of the defining moves of a Jewish Science, in this specific frame of reference, would be to situate the knowledge, "There is no Other," precisely where other intellectual and religious traditions establish their …

Title Iii Of The Violence Against Women Act: The Answer To Domestic Violence Or A Constitutional Time-Bomb Comment., Yvette J. Mabbun

St. Mary's Law Journal

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was enacted in 1994 to combat the growing and widespread epidemic of domestic violence. Congressional committees assigned to study this epidemic found that violent attacks by men topped the list of dangers to an American woman’s health. In an attempt to raise society’s awareness of the problem of violence against women and to ameliorate the victimization of women, Congress enacted VAWA. Specifically, Title III of VAWA establishes a federal civil right for victims of violent, gender-motivated crimes. These provide victims with either injunctive or monetary compensation. Consequently, there have been questions about the constitutionality …
