Two Heads Are Better Than One? Setting Realizable Goals In The Basic Course, Glen Williams Jan 1997

Two Heads Are Better Than One? Setting Realizable Goals In The Basic Course, Glen Williams

Basic Communication Course Annual

Establishing goals is central to the success of the basic course. The degree to which those goals are realized depends, in large measure, upon the manner in which they are established and reviewed. This article assists course directors and instructional staff by examining the process of defining objectiveness, a process which encompasses goals, mission, and vision and which benefits from widespread, active involvement. This article presents sample objectives for consideration, and it notes the conditions under which the process of defining objectives thrives or is threatened.

Inductive Reasoning In Persecutory Delusional Thought, Ian Walter Shelley Baker Jan 1997

Inductive Reasoning In Persecutory Delusional Thought, Ian Walter Shelley Baker

School of Psychology Theses

Delusions are considered to be one of the primary symptoms of psychosis but until recently have received little empirical investigation. One approach has been to examine the extent to which deluded individuals demonstrate cognitive biases which are different from those of normal controls in inductive reasoning tasks. In this study two hypothesis testing tasks were used to investigate cognitive biases in a group of people with persecutory delusions compared to a group whose delusions had remitted and a normal control group. Participants completed two tasks consisting of a series of visual discrimination problems in which they had to choose between …

Reflections On Voices, Lynn Mcclelland Jan 1997

Reflections On Voices, Lynn Mcclelland

School of Psychology Theses

Voice hearing (auditory hallucinations) is associated with multiple problems : disturbed behaviour, anxiety, depression, social stigma, and suicide ( Siris 1991 , Barnes et al. 1989, Caldwell & Gottesman 1990). Traditionally voices are seen as a symptom of schizophrenia , psychosis, and mental illness, even though recent estimates of prevalence are 2-4% of the population (Siris 1990, Tien et al. 1993). This view has been challenged by research that has shown that there are many different experiences of voices, positive and negative, and that they are not confined to particular diagnoses or clinical populations (Romme & Escher 1989, Bentall 1990). …

Is Toilet Training As Easy As A B C?, John Doran Jan 1997

Is Toilet Training As Easy As A B C?, John Doran

School of Psychology Theses

Toilet training is often viewed as a fairly straightforward process. This may be why much of the prescriptive literature available today has not been subject empirical investigation. This study followed twenty-six children through toilet training to investigate five factors that are assumed to be associated with a successful outcome to training - child readiness, parental readiness, behavioural style of parents, child temperament and the type of approach parent's use to train their child. Three of these five factors - behavioural style of parent's, child temperament and the approach parent's use to train their child - were found to be associated …

Intrusive Memories, Coping And Outcome In Depression: Towards A Traumatic Processing Model?, Julie Diane Parker Jan 1997

Intrusive Memories, Coping And Outcome In Depression: Towards A Traumatic Processing Model?, Julie Diane Parker

School of Psychology Theses

Recent studies (e.g. Kuyken & Brewin, 1994a) have noted the presence of high levels of disturbing intrusive memories in depressed women. Intrusive memories are best known as a post-traumatic symptom and have received considerable attention from researchers in this field. The presence of a post-traumatic symptom in depression indicates that trauma models might be useful in refining our understanding and treatment of depression. Predictions based on theories of post-traumatic processing were tested in relation to the intrusive memories of a sample of 26 depressed women. The women showed a pattern of intrusive memory experiences which indicate that their memories are …

The Medical Malpractice Crisis In Obstetrics: A Gestalt Approach To Reform, Elizabeth Swire Falker Jan 1997

The Medical Malpractice Crisis In Obstetrics: A Gestalt Approach To Reform, Elizabeth Swire Falker

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The medical malpractice crisis in obstetrics has led to a decline in practicing obstetricians, particularly in high-risk and rural areas, disproportionately affecting disadvantaged women. This crisis is driven by high malpractice insurance premiums, defensive medicine practices, and poor physician-patient communication. The article proposes reforms, including the integration of certified nurse-midwives, improved communication strategies, and alternative compensation systems, to reduce litigation, stabilize insurance markets, and improve access to care.

Passion's Progress: Modern Law Reform And The Provocation Defense, Victoria Nourse Jan 1997

Passion's Progress: Modern Law Reform And The Provocation Defense, Victoria Nourse

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Based on a systematic study of fifteen years of passion murder cases, this article concludes that reform challenges our conventional ideas of a "crime of passion" and, in the process, leads to a murder law that is both illiberal and often perverse. If life tells us that crimes of passion are the stuff of sordid affairs and bedside confrontations, reform tells us that the law's passion may be something quite different. A significant number of the reform cases the author has studied involve no sexual infidelity whatsoever, but only the desire of the killer's victim to leave a miserable relationship. …

Learning From Lincoln, William Michael Treanor Jan 1997

Learning From Lincoln, William Michael Treanor

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The most arresting aspect of Jack Balkin's thought-provoking paper about the consequences of fidelity to the Constitution is his use of Abraham Lincoln. Professor Balkin offers Lincoln as a prime example of someone blinded by fidelity to the Constitution. Lincoln's fidelity to the Constitution, Balkin tells us, allowed him to make a kind of peace with slavery, to think that it was "not so great an evil that it had to be abolished immediately." This is such a powerful point because, 130 years after Lincoln's assassination, we mourn him still. We mourn him because we miss his leadership, we miss …

Legislating Virtue: How Segregationists Disguised Racial Discrimination As Moral Reform Following Brown V. Board Of Education, Anders Walker Jan 1997

Legislating Virtue: How Segregationists Disguised Racial Discrimination As Moral Reform Following Brown V. Board Of Education, Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

Shortly after the Supreme Court of the United States invalidated school segregation in Brown v. Board of Education,[1] Mississippi Circuit Judge Tom P. Brady [2] delivered a speech to a chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution on the decision’s consequences. Brady’s speech, later published and popularized throughout the South,[3] declared that the ruling’s ultimate goal was not educational equality, but racial amalgamation:[4]

Let’s get one thing unmistakably clear, the leaders of the three million block-voting negroes of the North and East and of California, together with segments of the Communist-front organizations of our population, have set as their …

Intimate Violence And The Problem Of Consent, Jane H. Aiken Jan 1997

Intimate Violence And The Problem Of Consent, Jane H. Aiken

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The juxtaposition of intimacy with violence is striking. Intimacy implies a closeness and a vulnerability that is treasured and inviolate. Intimacy should foreclose the possibility of violence. Intimate violence should be an oxymoron. Yet, intimacy sometimes creates its own special kind of violence, one that can erupt into rape or assault. On a less physical level, intimacy may cause violence to a woman's personal integrity and economic independence.

Intimate violence manifests itself with a certain subtlety that forces women to walk a careful tightrope in order to avoid threatened harm. This essay is about that tightrope: the double binds women …

Striving To Teach “Justice, Fairness, And Morality”, Jane H. Aiken Jan 1997

Striving To Teach “Justice, Fairness, And Morality”, Jane H. Aiken

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The MacCrate Report has reinvigorated legal education by identifying fundamental skills and values that are essential to effective lawyering. As we go through the process of ensuring that we train students in these fundamentals, we should not ignore the values identified in the report. At the heart of these values is the injunction that lawyers should strive to promote justice, fairness, and morality. Law schools and law teachers can play a significant role in instilling in our students a passion to ensure justice.

The Shaping Force Of Corporate Law In The New Economic Order, Jeffrey N. Gordon Jan 1997

The Shaping Force Of Corporate Law In The New Economic Order, Jeffrey N. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

My topic for this Allen Chair lecture is the shaping force of corporate governance in the new economic order. It is easy to think of corporate law as an arcane field with mysterious terms and peculiar rules, ultimately of interest only to those who are prepared to bill at least 2000 hours a year to unravel its complexities. This is the view that there is a pointless mystery about shareholders, directors, common stocks, debentures, and the bizarre creature my class encountered recently, a convertible exchangeable cumulative preferred stock; and that ultimately corporate law and practice consists of the expert manipulation …

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Administrative Procedure, Patricia L. Mckenney Jan 1997

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Administrative Procedure, Patricia L. Mckenney

University of Richmond Law Review

This article reviews recent developments in the law affecting administrative procedure in Virginia. The 1997 General Assembly made no substantive changes to the Commonwealth's fundamental law of administrative procedure, but it did make numerous amendments to agency law affecting administrative case decisions. Among the major changes to agency procedures include authorizing the Commissioner of Social Services to review local board eligibility decisions, extending the powers of health regulatory boards that govern the licensing of health professionals, and permitting the air, water and waste boards to implement mediation and voluntary dispute resolution proceedings.

The Development Of Baseball Umpires' Uniforms, 1846-1996, Elizabeth K. Martin Jan 1997

The Development Of Baseball Umpires' Uniforms, 1846-1996, Elizabeth K. Martin

Open Access Master's Theses

Organized baseball games, from 1846 on, required the services of one or more umpires to enforce the rules of play. The umpire's formality of dress helped to establish his authority by distinguishing him from both the players and the spectators. Throughout the one hundred and fifty year period of this study the umpire remained one of the most formally and conservatively dressed men at the ball park.

For the first quarter-century of modern baseball, umpires were amateurs who wore their customary clothing when asked to officiate. This consisted of a frock coat, top hat, white linen and matched or contrasting-colored …
