Building Embankments Of Fly/Bottom Ash Mixtures, Ahmed M.K. Karim, C. W. Lovell, Rodrigo Salgado

JTRP Technical Reports

This research investigates the engineering properties of mixtures of bottom ash and Class F fly ash relevant to their utilization in highway embankment construction. The research included ash samples from two major power plants in Indiana that disposed of their ash differently. The first power plant disposes of the bottom ash and fly ash separately and hence explicit mixtures were synthetically formed and tested. The second power plant disposes of the bottom ash and fly ash together in a common location and hence they become homogeneous samples for the research. Characterization of the ash included grain size analysis, specific gravity, …

Development Of A Tire Pyrolysis Process And Apparatus Using Steam Displacement Of The Combustible Atmosphere, Timothy Whitney Burrell Jan 1997

Development Of A Tire Pyrolysis Process And Apparatus Using Steam Displacement Of The Combustible Atmosphere, Timothy Whitney Burrell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is the purpose of this research to convert a batch vacuum pyrolysis process into a pyrolytic process that operates at ambient air pressure with the capabilities of a continuous material flow operation. Further, it is important to optimize the conditions of the pyrolysis process so as to reduce costs of operation and to reasonably maximize products that have value. Steam will be used to displace the combustible atmosphere which enables ambient air pressure operation and elimination of need for inert carrier gasses or evacuation of the apparatus. The use of steam also allows water traps to be used as …

Perceptions Of Businesses On Environmental Regulatory Information, Kimberly K. Gunderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine the source and amount of information that a sample of businesses receive on environmental regulatory topics and from what sources they would prefer to receive this information. More specifically, the study demonstrated the discrepancy between the sources from which businesses currently receive their information and the sources from which they would prefer to receive it. The study also addressed how relevant this information was to the businesses and with which regulations the businesses were the most and least knowledgeable. The study was done by conducting a mail-back survey of 500 Iowa small …

Water Rights And Ecology On The Wind River Indian Reservation: The Collision Of Histories, A Tradition Of Neglect And Suggestions For Resolution, John F. Dillon

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In 1989, in a four-to-four vote without opinion, the United States Supreme Court let stand a senior priority, reserved Indian water right for the Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes of the Wind River Indian Reservation. Shortly thereafter, the Tribes issued a permit requiring a minimum flow of water, known as an 'instream flow/ on the Wind River for fishery, environmental and cultural purposes. In 1992 however, a Wyoming Supreme Court majority ruled the Tribes must divert their water from its stream channel in order to use it and that the State Engineer shall administer the Tribes' water. Without means to …

A Comparative Study And Estimation Of The Life-Cycle Cost Impact Of Application Of Real-Time Non-Intrusive (Rtni) Monitoring Technology To Real-Time Embedded Systems, Michael D. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

The use of real time non-intrusive (RTNI) monitoring has had an impact on life cycle costs of existing programs through a reduction in debug time. Other areas in which RTNI monitoring can provide potential benefits to future programs are through the use of increased dynamic testing and the sharing of testing time among more engineers. There are a number of areas in which software life cycle costs are impacted by various cost drivers. To determine which areas were affected by the use of RTNI monitoring, a panel of expert users of RTNI monitoring was created using a form of the …

The Effect Of Ultrasonic Frequency Upon Enhanced Killing Ofp. Aeruginosa Biofilms, Zhen Qian, Richard D. Sagers, William G. Pitt Jan 1997

The Effect Of Ultrasonic Frequency Upon Enhanced Killing Ofp. Aeruginosa Biofilms, Zhen Qian, Richard D. Sagers, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

It is widely recognized that the bacteria sequestered in a biofilm on a medical implant are much more resistant to antibiotics than their planktonic counterparts. Recent studies have shown that application of antibiotic along with low power ultrasound significantly increases the killing of planktonic bacteria by the antibiotic. Herein is reported a similar application of antibiotic and ultrasound to sessile bacteria in biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on a polyethylene substrate. Biofilm viability was measured after exposure to 12 μg/ml gentamicin sulfate and 10 mW/cm2 ultrasound at frequencies of 70 kHz, 500 kHz, 2.25 MHz, and 10 MHz. The results …

Primo Levi, Ilona Klein Jan 1997

Primo Levi, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Chemistry and literature, viewed by most people as widely different subjects, come together in the works of Primo Levi, an Italian Jew who was both a professional chemist and a professional writer. Levi said that he wanted to fill the gap between the imaginative world of literature and the analytical world of science. Believing such a gap absurd, he was never daunted by the purported incompatibility between the two fields of knowledge. Levi's literary work is also marked by his experience in Auschwitz's concentration camp, where he was interned from February 1944 to January 1945. Through his characteristically clear and …
