Primo Levi, Ilona Klein Jan 1997

Primo Levi, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Chemistry and literature, viewed by most people as widely different subjects, come together in the works of Primo Levi, an Italian Jew who was both a professional chemist and a professional writer. Levi said that he wanted to fill the gap between the imaginative world of literature and the analytical world of science. Believing such a gap absurd, he was never daunted by the purported incompatibility between the two fields of knowledge. Levi's literary work is also marked by his experience in Auschwitz's concentration camp, where he was interned from February 1944 to January 1945. Through his characteristically clear and …

Release Of Inorganic Material During Coal Devolatilization, Larry L. Baxter, Reginald E. Mitchell, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 1997

Release Of Inorganic Material During Coal Devolatilization, Larry L. Baxter, Reginald E. Mitchell, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Experimental results presented in this paper indicate that coal devolatilization products convectively remove a fraction of the nonvolatile components of inorganic material atomically dispersed in the coal matrix. Results from three facilities burning six different coals illustrate this mechanism of ash transformation and release from coal particles. Titanium is chosen to illustrate this type of mass release from coal particles on the basis of its low volatility and mode of occurrence in the coal. During moderate rates of devolatilization (104 K/s heating rate), no significant loss of titanium is noted. At more rapid rates of heating/devolatilization (105 K/s) …

Soot In Coal Combustion Systems, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jinliang Ma, Jim Rigby, Alexander L. Brown, Brent W. Webb Jan 1997

Soot In Coal Combustion Systems, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jinliang Ma, Jim Rigby, Alexander L. Brown, Brent W. Webb

Faculty Publications

Soot is generated from coal when volatile matter, tar in particular, undergoes secondary reactions at high temperatures. A description of soot in coal flames allows better calculations of radiative transfer and temperatures in near-burner regions, which in turn allows more accurate predictions of NOx formation in coal-fired furnaces. Experiments are reviewed that examine the formation, agglomeration and properties of coal-derived soot, including pyrolysis experiments and combustion experiments. This review includes the types of experiments performed, the soot yields obtained, the size of the soot particles and agglomerates, the optical properties of soot, the relationship between coal-derived soot and soot …

Implementation Of A Frequency-Agile, High Power Backward Wave Oscillator, Chaouki T. Abdallah, E. Schamiloglu, G.T. Park, V.S. Souvalian

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Work at the University of New Mexico (UNM) has demonstrated how finite length effects in a high power vacuum backward wave oscillator (BWO) can be exploited to achieve frequency agility for constant beam and magnetic field parameters. This enhanced bandwidth is obtained through the axial displacement of the slow wave structure with respect to the cutoff neck "inlet" to the electrodynamic system. This paper describes progress on the implementation of this automatic displacement to facilitate the incorporation of a robust controller, as proposed by Abdallah, et al. (1996). The purpose of this controller is to demonstrate a "smart tube" where …

Purpose This study was conducted in support of a proposed Federal initiative to promote the quality of life (QOL) of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth. The goal of the study was to collect and organize existing information and to develop a set of recommendations to assist in the development of coordinated Federal policy. Methods Data collection efforts were limited to the study's two month period of performance and included bibliographic research, and solicitation of information from Federal agencies and national Indian organizations. A number of bibliographic resources - MEDLINE, PsychINFO, etc, - were searched to identify information pertaining …

Construction Work: The Canons Of Indian Law (Case Note), Max J. Minzner Jan 1997

Construction Work: The Canons Of Indian Law (Case Note), Max J. Minzner

Faculty Scholarship

Congressional pronouncements in the area of Indian law have often been both sweeping and contradictory. To clear away some of the resulting confusion, the Supreme Court has adopted canons for construing these acts: Most importantly, ambiguous statutes and treaties are interpreted in favor of the tribes. In Alaska v. Native Village of Venetie, the Ninth Circuit applied this canon in interpreting the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), determining that Alaska's native villages qualify as "Indian country." This Case Note will show that the court's reliance on the canon of construction was misplaced. The most consistent interpretation of recent Supreme …
