This article discusses how the rules affecting the use of surface water ground water in a typical riparian state, Indiana, can promote the conservation biological diversity. The article first surveys the basic water laws that apply to surface water, diffused surface water, underground streams, and ground water. The rules governing the uses of these waters originate in common law property doctrines and substantially clarified by state legislation. Next the article considers state administration of water. The article examines regulatory tools and administrative opportunities control uses of water in a manner that protects biodiversity. Programs requiring permits for construction in floodplains, …

It is well known that skeletal muscle intrinsic maximal shortening velocity is inversely related to species body mass. However, there is uncertainty regarding the relationship between the contractile properties of muscle fibers obtained from commonly studied laboratory animals and those obtained from humans. In this study we determined the contractile properties of single chemically skinned fibers prepared from rat, rhesus monkey, and human soleus and gastrocnemius muscle samples under identical experimental conditions. All fibers used for analysis expressed type I myosin heavy chain as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Physiol. 82(1): 189–195, 1997.—This study examined the effectiveness of resistance exercise as a countermeasure to non-weight-bearing-induced alterations in the absolute peak force, normalized peak force (force/fiber cross-sectional area), peak stiffness, and maximal shortening velocity (V o) of single permeabilized type I soleus muscle fibers. Adult rats were subjected to one of the following treatments: normal weight bearing (WB), non-weight bearing (NWB), or NWB with exercise treatments (NWB+Ex). The electrical excitation threshold of a nerve axon is dependent upon the physical properties of the axon membrane as well as the axon diameter. Histological studies have confirmed that peripheral afferent muscle nerves have a characteristic distribution of axon diameters. We approximate a probability density function for this distribution that consists of the summation of several Gaussian functions. A transformation technique is then applied for the random generation of the nerve axon diameters from uniformly distributed random numbers. For the example presented, the resultant distribution of peripheral afferent muscle nerve axon diameters conforms approximately to the characteristic distribution that has …

The first section of this paper reviews some spreadsheets of land-use profitability by soil type which were developed in a previous study, "The economic land capability assessment, Waroona to Capel". The second section discusses how externalities can be accounted for by developing a range of complementary approaches which reinforce property rights.

The spreadsheets reviewed were developed as an aid to aggregate land-use planning, and were proposed as a basis for determining transfer payments to reflect the social costs of phosphorus pollution. The spreadsheets were found to lack the flexibility needed to compare alternative management options, and considered inappropriate for dealing …

Expanding Bulgaria’s political, economic, and cultural cooperation with the countries of Asia is a major priority of the Bulgarian government policy. Transport plays a key role in the implementation of this priority both by providing the necessary conditions for international transit traffic and by meeting the needs of the Bulgarian economy and population. Structural reform in transport to a great extent depends on a sustainable investment policy. At present, prevailing conditions are likely to attract investments, especially to the airports of Sofia and Bourgas. Nebraska Anthropologist

Type II diabetes has reached epidemic proportions among Native Americans. It Is estimated that 12.2 percent of all Native Americans in the U.S. have Type II diabetes. This compares with 5.2 percent of the general U.S. population (Diabetes Statistics 1997). The highest rate of diabetes in the world is in the Pima Nation. Half of all Pima Indians age 35 and older have diabetes (West 1974). Diabetes causes severe health complications and is a major cause of
death for Native Americans.
