The purpose of this study was to assess the affect of experimenter chosen 50 beat per minute music composed especially for stress and anxiety reduction on a select group of college students, and to examine its usefulness in promoting relaxation. The rationale for the study was based on research done in the area of using music to promote relaxation, and on the composer's claims that this music has been effective on a variety of populations for such purposes. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference at the alpha level .05 in the means of the Anger-ln. Anger-Out, and Anger Control scales scores of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory reported by extraverted and introverted participants. Thirty-nine undergraduate students enrolled in a community living course from a small, private, midwestern college served as participants in the present study. There were 16 males and 23 females who volunteered to participate in the present stud_ (mean age- 18.21 ). Optimal foraging theories relate food preference to nutrient content and nutrient availability to home range size. After synthesizing these theories, I hypothesized that the availability of preferred food plants influences the home range size of generalist herbivores. I also hypothesized that the availability of preferred foods does not affect weight gain of time-minimizing generalist herbivores, but should affect the weight gain of energy-maximizing generalist herbivores. To test these hypotheses, I studied the home ranges, weights, weight gains, food habits, and habitats of six adult female mountain beavers (Aplodontia rufa) from six separate sites where bracken fern was either …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

During the post-Darwinian history of taxonomy, the Linnaean hierarchy has maintained its role as a means for representing hierarchical taxonomic relationships. During the same period, the principle of descent has taken on an increasingly important role as the basis for reformulated versions of fundamental taxonomic concepts and principles. Early in this history, the principle of descent provided an explanation for the existence of taxa and implied a nested, hierarchical structure for taxonomic relationships. Although an evolutionary explanation for taxa contradicted the Aristotelian context within which the Linnaean hierarchy was developed, the nested, hierarchical structure of taxonomic rela· tionships implied by …

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Daily water quality data from six U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitoring stations along the Great Miami River and digital land use/land cover and elevation data for the same watershed were analyzed. The validity of using electrolytic conductivity as a water quality indicator was examined by correlating conductivity with 199 other water quality variables, 60 of which were significantly correlated with conductivity. Positive correlations existed between conductivity and dissolved materials. Negative correlations existed between conductivity and insoluble or suspended materials. Conductivity was also found negatively correlated with stream discharge, and so were most water quality variables that were positively correlated with …

The internal oral anatomy of phyllomedusines has only been described for Agalychnis callydrias using light microscopy. Herein, we compare the internal oral anatomy of the genera Phyllomedusa, Agalychnis, Pachymedusa, and Phasmahyla, using SEM methodology. Tadpoles of ten species were prepared using standard SEM techniques; these larvae ranged from Gosner stages 34-39. Phasmahyla has a unique prenarial arena with three well developed pre-narial arena papillae, whereas the other genera possess the prenarial arena papillae in a semicircular arrangement with the opening directed posteriorly. Pachymedusa differs from Phyllomedusa and Agalychnis by having a low, straight-edge, median ridge; also, its buccal floor arena …

Scientists in the field of cell biology have focused considerable attention on a unicellular species of green algae known as Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. This organism is relatively common in bodies of fresh water and some types of soil, but most of the attention is due to its value as a model for biochemical studies. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus serves as the pacemaker for mammalian circadian rhythms. In a hamster brain slice preparation, the authors were able to record spontaneous activity from SCN cells for up to 4 days in vitro and verify a self-sustained rhythm in firing. The phase of this rhythm was altered by the concentration of glucose in the bathing medium, with time of peak firing advanced for a 20 mM glucose condition and slightly delayed for a 5 mM glucose condition, relative to 10 mM. Our panel will address a topic that goes to the heart of a debate over the nature of humankind: When dealing with governmentsponsored redistribution of wealth, can our elected representatives, to whom the Constitution grants federal taxing and spending authority, be trusted to exercise that authority; or must we place upon them what James Madison referred to as "auxiliary precautions," burdens higher than those imposed by the requirement that they stand for reelection, in the case of the House, every two years, or in the case of the Senate, every six years?

This Essay focuses on a dimension of the regulatory takings issue that has received relatively little attention in what is otherwise a vast amount of literature on the topic: Why the Court is so persistently splintered and its precedent so seemingly schizophrenic. Most academic discussion has focused on the sheer difficulty of reconciling the public's firmly held conception of sacrosanct private property rights with the public's increasing demand for restrictions on the exercise of those same rights when they affect others adversely.
