This paper examines the issues of pre-natal genetic testing and its ethical and legal concerns. Part II details the scientific techniques involved in pre-natal genetic testing. Part III discusses the Human Genome Project and its influence on the choices available to prospective parents. Part IV analyzes the moral and ethical issues raised by pre-natal genetic screening. Part V presents the legal issues raised by pre-natal genetic screening. Finally, Part VI concludes and offers a prospective on the future of these technologies.

Amazight Identity In The Post Colonial Moroccan State: A Case Study In Ethnicity, Morag E. Boyd

This study will demonstrate that the Amazight are a distinct ethnic group in Morocco, despite the common interpretation in scholarly and everyday discourse that they are merely groups of people speaking one of the Amazight language and not representing a distinct cultural entity. The study will go on to examine the ramifications of this ethnic identity and the heritage of the historical and tribal roots of the Amazight in light of nationalism, state building, ethnicity, and cultural marginalization.

The Stabilizing Efects Of Disulfide Bonds On Limulus And Octopus Hemocyanin, Danielle Mercatante

Hemocyanin is a large molecular weight, oxygen carrying protein that is present in the hemolymph of mollusks and arthropods . Limulus, horseshoe crab, hemocyanin is made up of 48 hexamer subunits ( consisting of seven different repeating subunits) each of which have oxygen binding dinuclear copper active centers. Octopus hemocyanin is composed of a single kind of polypeptide chain that has seven functional units, or oxygen binding domains.

The experience of having an infant with colic may affect early interactions between the mother and infant. The present study investigated infant - mother interaction in infants with colic, excessive crying, and non-colic controls and their mothers. The Colic Symptom Checklist was used to identify infants between 4-6 weeks of age with colic (N=18), excessive crying (N=9), and controls without crying problems (N=13). The subjects were healthy, full-term normal infants recruited through pediatric referral. There were no differences between the three groups of infants for infant medical or family demographic characteristics. Face-to-face interaction was used to describe the caregiver's behavior, …

The 1986 amendments to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974 (42 USC 300f et seq.) placed additional requirements on states and municipalities to protect water supplies in a new way: The amendments mandate states to adopt wellhead protection programs. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is carrying out these requirements and, following federal guidelines, has adopted a program entailing requirements for most the 39 Rhode Island communities. Since the most immediate concern is safety, the discussion will focus on issues concerning playground safety. In an effort to enhance the effectiveness of the programming which they provide the group initiated a research project designed to illuminate strategies for increasing the effectiveness of community-based service provision. In Charlton, Massachusetts, the current open-space subdivision option doesn't work well for the benefit of people or wildlife, but rather allows the developer to cut costs without giving a more beneficial design in return. Open space "islands" are being created that have no connectivity with one another, making them little more than buffers of undisturbed land within and among developments. Comparison Of Waterbird Utilization Of Two Northwest Arkansas Reservoirs, Jefferey T. Briggler, Robert C. Dobbs

Waterbird use of two moderately-sized reservoirs in northwest Arkansas was studied in the autumns of 1993 and 1995. In addition to waterbird counts; surface area, water temperature, conductivity, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, macrophyte presences, number of total macroin vertebrates and degree of human activity were evaluated. Lake Fayetteville supported a greater overall waterbird species richness and species abundance than Lake Wedington. The observed number of ducks per hectare showed a significant difference between the lakes in both 1993 and 1995. Surface feeding birds were significantly more abundant at Lake Fayetteville in both 1993 and 1995, whereas diving birds, which feed …

Prior to timber harvesting, forest floor mass and nutrient concentrations in forest floor and mineral soil were determined in 24 mature, shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.)-hardwood stands occurring within the northern, eastern, southern and western sub-ecoregions of the Ouachita Mountains. The forest floor samples were collected at each of three locations representing the lower, mid, and upper slope positions within each stand. Samples of the L-(litter) and F-layers (fermentation) were collected separately. Materials from the L-layer were differentiated into hardwood foliage, pine foliage, and woody/reproductive components. Mass and nutrient concentrations of the various forest floor components were compared among slope …

This strategy requires that critical knowledge of the three dimensional binding site on receptor molecules be known. NMR studies are frequently employed to ascertain important structural data on individual proteins as well as complexes of proteins with ligands. Substantial savings in time as well as cost can be achieved if some desired properties can be predicted prior to the synthesis of the molecule. The outer orbitals of a molecule are primarily responsible for many different properties of the molecules. The Ozark shiner, Notropis ozarcanus, an endemic species of the Ozark Highlands, was studied from 1994-1995 to determine its present distribution and conservation status in Arkansas. One-hundred and four collections of fishes were made from throughout the historic range of the Ozark shiner. A total of 91 Ozark shiners was collected during the two-year study. The present state distribution is described as well as the conservation status of the Ozark shiner in Arkansas. The largest populations seem to be present in the protected Buffalo River.

In the Phase II Ecosystem Management Research Program in the Ouachita and Ozark National Forests, an interdisciplinary group of scientists are evaluating the effects and trade-offs of partial cutting methods in a replicated stand level study. Information from approximately 2,000 plots is being collected by more than fifty researchers during this five-year project with plans to continue data collection long term. To evaluate the effects of different management strategies and their interactions with forest resources, data must be brought into a common format and made available to all researchers. Internal Parasitism In Free-Ranging Black Bears In The Pisgah National Forest, Barbara Jenness

A qualitative analysis of intestinal parasitism present in the American black bear, Ursus americanus, in western North Carolina has never been documented. A survey of endoparasitism was conducted in conjunction with research by North Carolina State University in Pisgah National For est. The survey was carried out by fecal analysis. In this population, black bears were found to be infected with the endoparasite , Baylisasaris transfuga, at a rate of 50 percent.

Novel β-polyfluoroalkoxy vinamidinium salts 3 and/or 4 were synthesized in good yields by the reaction of N-(2- polyfluoroalkoxy-3 ,3-difluoro-1-propenyI)trimethylammonium iodides (2), prepared from N-(2,3,3-trifluoro-1-propenyl)trimethylammonium iodide (1), with secondary amines in MeCN at 70 °C for 1 h. The salts were also obtainable in comparable yields by the one-pot reaction of 1 with sodium polyfluoroalkoxide followed by treatment with amines.
