In this article, the author first examines the mechanism by which blood-borne disease is transmitted through sharing of injection equipment. Thereafter, he presents a public health strategy for reducing multi-person use of contaminated injection equipment. This strategy includes: repealing or modifying current laws and regulations making possession and distribution of sterile injection equipment a criminal offense; implementing syringe exchange programs to expand access to new syringes for users of injection drugs; and counseling, education, and treatment targeted to injecting drug users (IDUs), including those in the prison and health care system. One Size Does Not Fit All: The Failure Of Washington's Licensing Standards For Alcohol And Drug Treatment Programs And Facilities To Meet The Needs Of Indians, Kelly S. Croman

It is well recognized that culturally and spiritually relevant alcohol and chemical dependency treatment programs are most successful. Washington's licensing standards for such programs and facilities, however, fail to address the cultural and spiritual needs of Indians who they serve. The State's current one-size-fits-all approach offers no hope for improved treatment outcomes for Indians. This Comment demonstrates the inadequacy of Washington's current treatment facility and program licensing standards and examines the high costs of maintaining these standards. The Comment concludes with a proposal for specific legislation for the State of Washington.

Evidence from community studies indicates that significant proportions of Indian women (30 percent) may have reproductive tract infections (RTIs). Given that women are in general asymptomatic and that even symptomatic women may not seek care, the estimates are the minimum levels of prevalence. Most women do not seek treatment for RTIs for such reasons as lack of awareness, acceptance that RTIs are part of women's lives, and lack of treatment facilities. The overall goal of this study was to develop an integrated program of reproductive tract infection/sexually transmitted disease (RTI/STD) clinical services within two family planning clinics in low-income neighborhoods in North Jakarta. Multiple training programs to introduce a standardized clinical evaluation for the detection, treatment, and management of RTI/STDs were conducted. Prior and subsequent to training, observations of health care provider (HCP) and client interactions were conducted to evaluate behavior changes among HCPs. Each consenting client received a standardized reproductive health history, a pelvic exam, and provided specimens for laboratory testing to detect RTIs. In most states in Mexico, abortion is excluded as a crime in pregnancies resulting from rape. However, legislation does not specify the norms by which women can obtain a legal abortion, which makes it difficult to choose this alternative. A partial solution to unwanted pregnancies from rape would be to provide emergency contraception (EC). Psychologists were trained to provide information on EC to women who reported a rape at four public ministry agencies specialized in sexual crime. A study was completed looking at marital status as it relates to parental contentment with the parent-child relationship. This varied from previous studies which looked at the quality of the marital relationship or measured the child's satisfaction with the parent-child relationship. A total sample of 48 parents participated, comprised of 34 married parents and 14 single parents. All participants were Caucasian, had children ages five to 14 attending a Midwest, urban, Catholic elementary school, and were between the ages of 27 and 49. The purpose of the project was to assess the effects of inbreeding on the genetic constitution of two Pakistani bradaris (literally defined as brotherhoods). Both bradaris contain children born to consanguineous (first cousin) and nonconsanguineous marriages. DNA samples have been supplied by Dr Subaib Ahmed of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Rawalpindi, for a total of 91 individuals. The specific allele frequencies, and levels of homozygosity of each bradari, were determined using twenty fluorescence-labelled microsatellite markers for chromosomes 13 and 15. Amplification of the DNA was performed using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products were separated …

This honours project examined the biochemical and haematological changes induced by exercise in the showjumping horse to determine whether a relationship exists between these values and performance. To complete this study 7 geldings and 1 stallion who were considered competition fit by their trainers were subjected to 2 forms of exercise. The first phase of this study involved an incremental exercise test performed at the Byford City Council horse training facility. The horses were cantered/galloped around a 1300m all weather training track at velocities of 6, 8, 10, and 12 m/sec for a duration of 2 minutes for each workload. …

Increasing land degradation is recognised as an immediate worldwide threat. Human induced soil salinity is probably the major cause of land abandonment, through its adverse effects on plant growth. Salinity is a major focus of environmental researchers because it is recognised that counter-strategies can potentially reclaim both artificially degraded lands and intrinsically saline areas. Studies were conducted on the natural history, ecology and potential stress of Ambystoma maculatum and Rana sylvatica at Dolly Sods, West Virginia. Temperature was found to be the primary stimulus influencing spring breeding migration of both species. Breeding period of R. sylvatica was found to be short in duration, resulting in deposition of eggs in large communal masses. Migration and breeding period of A. maculatum occurred from early-April to early-May. Egg deposition occurred from mid-April to mid-May. A second egg deposition of A. maculatum occurred mid-June. Delusions are considered to be one of the primary symptoms of psychosis but until recently have received little empirical investigation. One approach has been to examine the extent to which deluded individuals demonstrate cognitive biases which are different from those of normal controls in inductive reasoning tasks. In this study two hypothesis testing tasks were used to investigate cognitive biases in a group of people with persecutory delusions compared to a group whose delusions had remitted and a normal control group. Voice hearing (auditory hallucinations) is associated with multiple problems : disturbed behaviour, anxiety, depression, social stigma, and suicide ( Siris 1991 , Barnes et al. 1989, Caldwell & Gottesman 1990). Traditionally voices are seen as a symptom of schizophrenia , psychosis, and mental illness, even though recent estimates of prevalence are 2-4% of the population (Siris 1990, Tien et al. 1993). Recent studies (e.g. Kuyken & Brewin, 1994a) have noted the presence of high levels of disturbing intrusive memories in depressed women. Intrusive memories are best known as a post-traumatic symptom and have received considerable attention from researchers in this field. The presence of a post-traumatic symptom in depression indicates that trauma models might be useful in refining our understanding and treatment of depression. Predictions based on theories of post-traumatic processing were tested in relation to the intrusive memories of a sample of 26 depressed women. Undue Influence And Gender Stereotypes: Legal Doctrine Or Indoctrination?, Veena K. Murthy

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that the undue influence doctrine in will contests disproportionately affects female testators, reflecting and reinforcing gender stereotypes. Courts are more likely to invalidate wills of female testators, undermining their testamentary freedom, while male testators are often treated as autonomous decision-makers. This disparity stems from societal gender norms that portray women as vulnerable and men as independent.
