Plotting The Mother: Caroline Norton, Helen Huntingdon, And Isabel Vane, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

The proper Victorian heroine neither acts nor plots. Heroines as disparate as Fanny Price of Mansfield Park and Gwendolen Harleth of Daniel Deronda prove their virtue by failing as actresses. When Fanny protests, “Indeed, I cannot act,” we know that it is because she cannot be other than what she is: virtuous. Gwendolen Harleth’s aborted attempt to make a career as an actress seems, in Daniel Deronda, to signal her essential difference from the Princess Halm-Eberstein, the mother who has abandoned Daniel in order to pursue her acting career. Legislative Approaches To Reducing The Hegemony Of The Priestly Model Of Medicine, Nancy K. Kubasek

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article presents the case that the legal culture in many ways undergirds the priestly model's hegemony over the therapeutic relationship between a woman and her doctor. To the extent that law provides this fundamental support, it legitimizes the mistreatment of women, especially with respect to their reproductive health. The implications are that the movement toward a more just legal culture necessitates the extirpation of this support.

The Sanctity Of Life And The Right To Die: Social And Jurisprudential Aspects Of The Euthanasia Debate In Australia And The United States, Roger S. Magnusson

Washington International Law Journal

This paper reviews social and legal issues in the current euthanasia debate. Focusing on Australia and the United States, the author argues that the legalization of physician-assisted suicide ("PAS") and/or active voluntary euthanasia ("AVE") is inevitable within the short to medium term, given recent developments which have undermined the sanctity of life ethic. Legal factors supporting this assessment include the changing definition of death, the growth of a legallyrecognized right to self-determination extending to the withdrawal of life-support, and the recognition by some courts that life support may be withdrawn without consent because life is considered to be futile. National regulation is frequently premised on scientific assump- tions; much of regulatory design is based on scientific findings. Con- sumer product, food and drug and workplace safety standards all depend on a scientific assessment of the risks faced by the public and of the efficacy of an adopted measure in addressing these risks. Build- ing codes, waste disposal protocols and mandated immunization of school children all proceed from the technical recommendations of the scientific community. In March 1995, Canadian gunboats seized and impounded a Spanish fishing trawler and cut the nets of another Spanish boat for alleged violations of international quotas and regulations governing the fishing of Greenland Halibut in the international waters of the North Atlantic.1 Spain and the European Union (EU) responded by alleging that the Canadians violated international law and committed an act of piracy by seizing a foreign ship in international waters.2 The EU threatened to impose economic sanctions against Canada, and the Spanish government responded by sending its own gunboats into the North Atlantic.3 The stage was set for a …

The protection of plant resources in urban areas is a growing conservation concern. Inventory activities that document species presence and stewardship plans that protect and enhance these areas are needed. The results of a botanical inventory of the Crooked Creek Community Juan Solomon Park in Indianapolis, Indiana, are reported in this paper. The 46-acre park contains three distinct habitats, supporting a wide variety of plants. One hundred seventy-nine vascular plant species from 64 families were identified, including 53 (29.6%) non-native species that are naturalizing within the park.
