Man's exploration of space is often analogized to his exploration of the ancient oceans. Ancient sea-explorers faced obstacles of uncharted oceans and land. They also faced difficulties in finding the means and financing to make their discoveries. Space industrial development suffers difficulties as well, however, many of the difficulties are legal obstacles.

The purpose of this project was to identify selected strategies for treating the autistic child in elementary schools in Taiwan. To accomplish this purpose, a review of current literature regarding autism and treatment of the autistic child was conducted. Additionally, related information from selected authorities on the treatment of autism was obtained and analyzed.

A writing program has been developed for intermediate level students to prepare them to meet the benchmarks of the Essential Academic Learning Requirements in Writing for Washington State. Students need daily, meaningful writing practice to contribute to success in their academic and work lives. The project includes daily writing practices, lesson plans for writing experiences that will meet the benchmarks established by the Commission on Student Learning, and a portfolio system for organization and assessment.

Impacts Of Climate Change On Net Productivity Of Coastal Waters: Implications For Carbon Budgets And Hypoxia, D Justic, N N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner

General circulation models predict that freshwater discharge from the Mississippi River (USA) to the coastal ocean would increase 20 % if atmospheric CO2 concentration doubles. Here we use a coupled physical-biological 2-box model to investigate the potential impacts of increased freshwater and nutrient inputs on the production and decay of organic matter in the coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Model results for a doubled CO2 climate indicate that the annual net productivity of the upper water column (NP, 0 to 10 m) is likely to increase by 65 g C m(-2) yr(-1), relative to a 1985-1992 average …

Many species of the ubiquitous pennate diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia have recently been discovered to produce domoic acid, a potent neurotoxin which causes Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were extremely abundant (up to 10(8) cells l(-1); present in 67% of 2195 samples) from 1990 to 1994 on the Louisiana and Texas, USA, continental shelves and moderately abundant (up to 10(5) cells l(-1); present in 18% of 192 samples) over oyster beds in the Terrebonne Bay estuary in Louisiana in 1993 and 1994. Guys And Dolls: Remedial Nurturing Skills In Post-Divorce Practice, Feminist Theory, And Family Law Doctrine, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Review

This Article addresses two pressing problems in contemporary family law and demonstrates the usefulness of feminist theory in analyzing both The first problem is the practical, specific problem of post-divorce nurturing of children; that is, why post-divorce nurturing is so often difficult for custodial and visiting parents, as well as their children. The second is a more theoretical, pervasive problem of doctrinal reform; that is, the persistence of gendered stereotypes in family law notwithstanding doctrinal reforms intended to eradicate them. The first problem provides a concrete context in which to clarify and analyze the second. It is a particularly apt …

Landscape ecological applications of remotely sensed data are needed over increasingly larger areas and at finer spatial scales. Within the framework of the National Biological Service Gap Analysis program, 36 Utah cover types were modeled from a state-wide Landsat TM mosaic created from 24 scenes at 30-metre resolution (219,883 sq km). The state was subset into three ecoregions for classification, with cover-type association to spectral classes defined using a two-step modeling approach. Steps included post-classification correlation of 1,758 state-wide field training sites to spectral classes, and post-classification ancillary GIS modeling using ecological parameters of elevation, slope, aspect, and location to …

This paper uses history, law, and First Amendment theory to examine the concepts of political correctness, free speech, and hate speech in a search for a solution of how best to deal with hate speech incidents that occur in the university campus community. The paper notes the American tendency toward tyranny of the majority as noted by Alexis de Tocqueville in the 1830s and then proceeds to examine the double-edged sword of free speech. An Examination Of Social Adaptation Processes Of Vietnamese Adolescents, Fayneese Miller, My Do, Jason Sperber

Ethnic Studies Review

The purpose of the study was to examine the factors that affect the ways in which Vietnamese youth feel about themselves and their "place" in society. More specifically, the purpose was to determine the relationship between sociocultural factors (L e. language proficiency, length of residence, socioeconomic class, ethnic identity, and cultural continuity) and such person-oriented variables as depression and alienation. Thrity-one college and fifteen high school students responded to a series of questions about themselves, family, relationships, personality, and achievement motivation. It was found that perceived problems with one's ethnic group, cultural continuity, and parental attitudes toward schooling significantly predicted …
