Hierarchial Roots And Shoots Or Opera Jehovae Magna! (Psalms 111:2), Dan H. Nicolson
Hierarchial Roots And Shoots Or Opera Jehovae Magna! (Psalms 111:2), Dan H. Nicolson
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The philosophy of Linnaeus's classification, Systema Naturae, is briefly reviewed, as well as those of post-Linnaean systems of plant classification. Texts of current codes of nomenclature pertaining to hierarchy, including associated rank terminations, are compared.
Problems In Cladistic Classification: Higher-Level Relationships In Land Plants, Peter R. Crane, Paul Kenrick
Problems In Cladistic Classification: Higher-Level Relationships In Land Plants, Peter R. Crane, Paul Kenrick
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Recent cladistic analyses of green plants recognize an extensive hierarchical series of relatively well-supported monophyletic groups. Translating this hierarchical pattern of relationships into a usable and informative written classification is important for purposes of scientific communication, research and teaching. However, in the context of the "Linnean" hierarchy, as manifested in the current International code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), effecting this translation confronts substantial practical difficulties--especially the proliferation of hierarchical levels. These problems are exacerbated by the current emphasis of the ICBN on a hierarchy in which different ranks have different formal rank-based endings. These difficulties could be ameliorated by de-emphasizing …
Classification: More Than Just Branching Patterns Of Evolution, Tod F. Stuessy
Classification: More Than Just Branching Patterns Of Evolution, Tod F. Stuessy
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The past 35 years in biological systematics have been a time of remarkable philosophical and methodological developments. For nearly a century after Darwin's Origin of Species, systematists worked to understand the diversity of nature based on evolutionary relationships. Numerous concepts were presented and elaborated upon, such as homology, parallelism, divergence, primitiveness and advancedness, cladogenesis and anagenesis. Classifications were based solidly on phylogenetic concepts; they were avowedly monophyletic. Phenetics emphasized the immense challenges represented by phylogeny reconstruction and advised against basing classifications upon it. Pheneticists forced reevaluation of all previous classificatory efforts, and objectivity and repeatability in both grouping and …

Epochal Change: War Over Social And Political Organization, Robert J. Bunker
Epochal Change: War Over Social And Political Organization, Robert J. Bunker
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The United States has been less affected by this process than most other Western nation-states; we seem to prosper despite such challenges. However, the breakdown of the family, increased drug use among our children, the growing specter of gang violence, and other forms of social terrorism suggest that our own institutions are not immune to a degree of chaos. Ralph Peters, in an earlier Parameters article, stated succinctly that we are witnessing "a struggle to redefine human meaning."[3] Regardless of the state of the revolution to which he referred, the struggle he describes is far from ended. If the examples …

Molecular Analysis Of An Enhancin Gene In The Lymantria Dispar Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, David S. Bischoff, James M. Slavicek
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A Lymantria dispar nuclear polyhedrosis virus (LdMNPV) gene has been identified that encodes a homolog to the granulovirus (GV) enhancin proteins that are capable of enhancing the infection of other baculoviruses. Enhancin genes have been identified and sequenced for three species of GVs but have not been found in any other nuclear polyhedrosis virus to date. The LdMNPV enhancin gene is located between 67.6 and 70.1 kbp on the viral genome. Northern and primer extension analyses of viral RNAs indicate that the enhancin gene transcripts are expressed at late times postinfection from a consensus baculovirus late promoter. The LdMNPV enhancin …

Two Precipices, One Chasm: The Economics Of Physician-Assisted Suicide And Euthanasia, Nelson Lund
Two Precipices, One Chasm: The Economics Of Physician-Assisted Suicide And Euthanasia, Nelson Lund
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
In Washington v. Glucksberg and Vacco v. Quill, the Supreme Court refused to create a constitutional right to assisted suicide, but apparently left Congress and the states wide discretion to experiment with new legislation. For the moment, most jurisdictions seem inclined to preserve the traditional legal prohibitions against this practice. Deeper forces in our society, however, may soon push us toward accepting assisted suicide, and much harsher forms of hastened dying as well.
This Article presents two distinct but related arguments. Part I argues that legalizing assisted suicide, whether through judicial or legislative action, would be a mistake because the …
