Orphanages In America: Are They Needed?, Cara Lynn Hans, Lawrence Payne
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this constructivist research study was to examine the idea of returning to the orphanage system, as a placement option for children who have been removed from their homes. The authors felt that this was especially important since lawmakers have been discussing this option as an answer to the question of welfare reform, and further felt that decisions such as these should not be made without the input of professionals in the social work field.

Strategies For Life In Flow: Tenacity, Morphometry, And Probability Of Dislodgment Of Two Mytilus Species, Emily C. Bell, John M. Gosline
Strategies For Life In Flow: Tenacity, Morphometry, And Probability Of Dislodgment Of Two Mytilus Species, Emily C. Bell, John M. Gosline
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The attachment strength of sessile intertidal organisms is continuously challenged by the hydrodynamic forces generated by breaking waves. This study explores mechanisms by which the attachment strength, or tenacity, can vary for one of the dominant competitors for space in this environment, the marine mussel. Tenacity was measured for 2 co-existing mussel species, Mytilus californianus and Mytilus trossulus, either solitary or within a bed (= bed mussels). The tenacity of M. californianus was higher than M. trossulus, due to increased byssal thread thickness, and the tenacity of solitary mussels was higher than bed mussels, due to the presence …

Preference For Flavoured Foods By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Administration Of Nitrogen, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Preference For Flavoured Foods By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Administration Of Nitrogen, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)
We suggested that food preference depends on the interplay between flavour and post-ingestive effects, and we predicted that protein-restricted lambs would acquire preferences for foods paired with supplemental sources of N, including urea (Expts 1 and 2), casein (Expt 3), and gluten (Expt 4). In each experiment, twenty lambs, in two groups of ten, were conditioned as follows: on odd-numbered days, lambs in group 1 received wheat straw (Expts 1, 3, and 4) or ground barley (Expt 2) flavoured with a distinctive flavour, and lambs in group 2 received the same food but with a different flavour. On even-numbered days, …

Preference For Wheat Straw By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Infusions Of Starch, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)
We hypothesized that feed preference depends on the interplay between flavour and postingestive effects, and we tested two predictions based on this hypothesis: (1) lambs acquire preferences for poorly nutritious feeds paired with starch; and (2) preferences persist when starch is no longer administered. Twenty lambs were randomly allocated to two groups and conditioned as follows: on odd-numbered days, lambs in group 1 received onion-flavoured wheat straw and lambs in group 2 received oregano-flavoured wheat straw. On even-numbered days, the flavours were switched and starch (2.5-9.4% of the digestible energy received/d) was infused into the rumen of all animals during …
Phasic Temperature Control Appraised With The Ceres-Wheat Model, Tyler Volk, Bruce Bugbee, Francesco Tubiello
Phasic Temperature Control Appraised With The Ceres-Wheat Model, Tyler Volk, Bruce Bugbee, Francesco Tubiello
Controlled Environments
Phasic control refers to the specification of a series of different environmental conditions during a crop's life cycle, with the goal of optimizing some aspect of productivity. Because of the enormous number of possible scenarios, phasic control is an ideal situation for modeling to provide guidance prior to experiments. Here we use the Ceres-Wheat model, modified for hydroponic growth chambers, to examine temperature effects. We first establish a baseline by running the model at constant temperatures from 10°C to 30°C. Grain yield per day peaks at 15°C at a value that is 25 % higher than the yield at the …

Fourmile Timber Sale Final Environmental Impact Statement, United States Forest Service
Final Environmental Impact Statements (ID)
This Final Environmental Impact Statement documents the analysis of four alternatives, including a "no action" alternative, that were developed for the proposed Fourmile timber sale. The sale area is on the New Meadows Ranger District of the Payette National Forest. The alternatives respond differently to the major issues and resources that were identified for this project. The purpose of the project is to improve the silvicultural conditions of timber stands in the area. Harvest emphasis to accomplish this would include removing dead, dying, and high-risk trees to improve the long term health and vigor of timber stands.

Influences Of River Discharge On Biological Production In The Inner Shelf: A Coupled Biological And Physical Model Of The Louisiana-Texas Shelf, Changsheng Chen, Denis A. Wiesenburg, Liusen Xie
Influences Of River Discharge On Biological Production In The Inner Shelf: A Coupled Biological And Physical Model Of The Louisiana-Texas Shelf, Changsheng Chen, Denis A. Wiesenburg, Liusen Xie
Journal of Marine Research
A coupled biological and physical model was applied to study the influence of river discharge on biological variability on the Louisiana-Texas (LATEX) continental shelf. The physical part included a primitive-equation turbulent closure model, and the biological part was a simple phytoplankton (P), zooplankton (Z), and nutrient (N) model. The model was forced by freshwater discharge from the river and ran prognostically under initial conditions of springtime water stratification and a steady-state solution of the P-Z-N model with no horizontal dependence. A nutrient source was included at the mouth of the river. The model predicted …
Subduction Of Water Masses In An Eddying Ocean, David Marshall
Subduction Of Water Masses In An Eddying Ocean, David Marshall
Journal of Marine Research
Mesoscale eddies modify the rate at which a water mass transfers from the surface mixed layer of the ocean into the interior thermocline, in particular in regions of intense baroclinic instability such as the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, open-ocean convective chimneys, and ocean fronts. Here, the time-mean subduction of a water mass, evaluated following the meandering surface density outcrops, is found to incorporate a rectified contribution from eddies, arising from correlations between the area over which the water mass is outcropped at the sea surface and the local subduction rate. Alternatively, this eddy subduction can be interpreted in terms of an …

Journal of Marine Research
The coastal transition zone and adjacent continental shelf of the Iberian upwelling system was studied in September 1986, during the seasonal transition from upwelling-favored to downwelling-favored winds. The most striking features in the coastal transition zone were: (1) a poleward flow of high salinity Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (subtropical) off the Rías Baixas (Galician western coast); and (2) an anticyclonic eddy off Cape Ortegal (Galician northern coast). Chemical and biological similarities between both structures, clearly different from the surrounding oceanic waters, suggest that the eddy was an isolated and aged parcel of water originating from the poleward flow. The …
Long-Term Measurements Of Flow Near The Aleutian Islands, R. K. Reed, P. J. Stabeno
Long-Term Measurements Of Flow Near The Aleutian Islands, R. K. Reed, P. J. Stabeno
Journal of Marine Research
In summer 1995, the Alaskan Stream at 173.5W was very intense; the peak geostrophic speed was ≈125 cm s−1, and the computed volume transport above 1000 db, referred to 1000 db, was 9 × 106 m3 s−1). Flow north of the central Aleutians was shallow, convoluted and weak (2– 3 × 106 m3 s−1). A sequence of CTD casts across Amukta Pass, spaced irregularly in time during 1993–1996, showed a mean northward (southward) geostrophic transport of 1.0 (0.4) × 106 m3 s−1, for a net flow …
Large-Scale Circulation With Small Diapycnal Diffusion: The Two-Thermocline Limit, R. M. Samelson, Geoffrey K. Vallis
Large-Scale Circulation With Small Diapycnal Diffusion: The Two-Thermocline Limit, R. M. Samelson, Geoffrey K. Vallis
Journal of Marine Research
The structure and dynamics of the large-scale circulation of a single-hemisphere, closed-basin ocean with small diapycnal diffusion are studied by numerical and analytical methods. The investigation is motivated in part by recent differing theoretical descriptions of the dynamics that control the stratification of the upper ocean, and in part by recent observational evidence that diapycnal diffusivities due to small-scale turbulence in the ocean thermocline are small (≈0.1 cm2 s−1). Numerical solutions of a computationally efficient, three-dimensional, planetary geostrophic ocean circulation model are obtained in a square basin on a mid-latitude β-plane. The forcing consists of a zonal …
Time-Dependent Motions And The Nonlinear Bottom Ekman Layer, K. H. Brink
Time-Dependent Motions And The Nonlinear Bottom Ekman Layer, K. H. Brink
Journal of Marine Research
The laminar bottom Ekman layer beneath a flow with finite relative vorticity is studied. First, the case with only a steady interior shear flow is reviewed, and then a case with a spatially uniform oscillating flow is superimposed. In both cases, the problem can be reduced to solving ordinary differential equations. The competition of two effects governs the results. The interior vorticity effectively modifies the rotation rate, but advection (especially vertically, due to Ekman pumping) tends to counteract the vorticity modification. Vertical advection keeps the time-dependent boundary layer well behaved for negative interior vorticities, but a boundary layer singularity can …
On The Differences Between Bubble-Mediated Air-Water Transfer In Freshwater And Seawater, W. E. Asher, L. M. Karle, B. J. Higgins
On The Differences Between Bubble-Mediated Air-Water Transfer In Freshwater And Seawater, W. E. Asher, L. M. Karle, B. J. Higgins
Journal of Marine Research
Bubble populations and gas transfer velocities were measured in cleaned and surfactant-influenced freshwater and seawater. A nonlinear fitting technique was used to partition the total gas transfer velocity for a gas in each water type into a turbulence- and bubble-mediated fraction. This showed that the bubble-mediated transfer fraction was larger in cleaned freshwater than in cleaned seawater and that the difference was a function of diffusivity and solubility. This was explained by the fact that the bubble measurements showed that bubble plumes in cleaned freshwater had a higher concentration of large bubbles and a lower concentration of small bubbles than …
Instability In Stratified Rotating Shear Flow Along Ridges, G. A. Schmidt, E. R. Johnson
Instability In Stratified Rotating Shear Flow Along Ridges, G. A. Schmidt, E. R. Johnson
Journal of Marine Research
This paper examines the interaction between continuously stratified horizontal shear flow and topography. It investigates when topography whose slope changes sign (i.e., a ridge or a trench) destabilizes a shear flow. The instabilities have the form of topographic Rossby waves and rely on the background potential vorticity gradient to exist. Barotropic flow is examined in detail for general horizontal shear over stepped topography and the longwave stratified case is examined in the more specific case of linear shear flow over a top-hat ridge profile. In all cases modes are unstable over significant ranges of the relevant parameters. Stationary unstable modes …
A Laboratory Study Of The Effects Of A Sloping Side Boundary On Wind-Driven Circulation In A Homogeneous Ocean Model, Ross W. Griffiths, George Veronis
A Laboratory Study Of The Effects Of A Sloping Side Boundary On Wind-Driven Circulation In A Homogeneous Ocean Model, Ross W. Griffiths, George Veronis
Journal of Marine Research
A laboratory model is used to investigate the effects of sloping boundaries on homogeneous wind-driven β-plane circulation. The very gentle slopes of real oceanic boundaries raise the possibility that dissipation by lateral diffusion of vorticity to the boundary is largely removed, leaving dissipation only in bottom Ekman layers. The laboratory model is a modification of the rotating ‘sliced-cylinder’ introduced by Pedlosky and Greenspan (1967) and Beardsley (1969) and in which flow is driven by a differentially rotating lid. The vertical wall is replaced with a side wall having a uniform 45° slope around the entire perimeter. This sloping boundary, like …
On The Transition Between Different Dynamical Regimes Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, V. M. Kamenkovich
On The Transition Between Different Dynamical Regimes Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, V. M. Kamenkovich
Journal of Marine Research
Two different dynamical regimes of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current are considered: the Sverdrup regime and the frictionally controlled one. In the former the intensity of the current does not depend on friction, while in the latter it is inversely proportional to the coefficient of friction. The transition between these two regimes is studied. It is shown that the frictionally controlled regime is generated not only in the case of closed isolines of ambient potential vorticity q. The regime is formed in the case of blocked (or partially blocked) q isolines as well, if the slope of the q isolines …
