An Analysis Of The Variation Within Cratoxylum Arborescens (Clusiaceae) In Malesia, A.C. Church, P.F. Stevens
Biology Department Faculty Works
The variation within the widespread West Malesian species Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl) Blume was analyzed and three distinctive variants were found. These are recognized formally as varieties, var. arborescens, var. miquelii King, and var. borneense A.C. Church & P.F. Stevens. A key and full descriptions are given. The characters employed to delimit the three taxa are discussed and the selection of varietal rank is justified.

Investigation Of The Statistical And Spatial Distributions Of Mercury Contaminated Fish, Surface Waters And Soils In Arkansas, H. D. Scott, J. M. Mckimmey
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Mercury (Hg) contamination of fish is a widespread problem throughout much of the United States and the world (Louisiana WWW page, 1997). Levels ofHg in fish suffic1ent to exceed the FDA action level of 1 mg kg-1 have been found in many water bodies, including some in Arkansas and Louisiana. As a result of the serious public health ramifications for developing fetuses and for people that subsist on native fish, fish consumption advisories due to Hg contamination have been issued in 29 states. Contamination of surface water bodies by Hg results from deforestation, forest fires, fossil fuels, mining, natural emissions …

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the quantities of maize and sorghum stems consumed by larvae of C. partellus and C. orichalcociliel/us as an indication of the amount of damage caused by these species to cereal crops. Results revealed that larvae of C. partellus consumed a greater quantity of maize than C. orichalcociliel/us on a daily basis and throughout the larval lifetime. C. partellus also consumed more sorghum than C. orichalcociliellus on a daily basis, but both species consumed equal amounts of sorghum in their larval lifetimes despite the fact that C. partellus completed a larval generation in a shoter …

Insects are among the most successful organisms in the animal Kingdom. Their capacity to survive and reproduce depends greatly on their ability to identify and respond selectively to cues from a heterogeneous environment. They can identify conspecifics and mates, differentiate between hosts, both plant and animal, and distinguish between many microclimatic factors such as variation in humidity, temperature and airflow. All these factors are attributed to the complexity of their sensory systems that facilitate both simple and complex behaviours. The insect is, however, isolated from its external surroundings by a cuticular structure that is relatively impermeable to chemical sensation. But …

Detection Of Bovine Immunodeficiency Virus Antibodies In Cattle By Western Blot Assay With Recombinant Gag Protein, Shucheng Zhang, Wenzhi Xue, Charles Wood, Qi-Min Chen, Sanjay Capil, Harish Minocha
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
A western blot assay using purified recombinant bovine immunodeficiency virus gag protein has been developed for detection of bovine immunodeficiency virus antibodies in bovine serum samples. The test was standardized with known bovine immunodeficiency virus positive and negative bovine serum samples and the monoclonal antibody to gag protein. Both naturally and experimentally infected cattle sera demonstrated positive test results. The result of western blot assay was compared with polymerase chain reaction test results in 134 blood samples collected from Kansas. Twenty-six samples tested positive for bovine immunodeficiency virus DNA with polymerase chain reaction (18.7%) and 25 were positive for the …
Bang-Bang Control Development Of Permeability Changes In A Membrane Model, Robert Melendy
Bang-Bang Control Development Of Permeability Changes In A Membrane Model, Robert Melendy
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
The application of systems and control theory to membrane physiology is presented here. Modeling efforts have focused on describing those physiologically realistic mechanisms which govern the regulation of membrane permeability in nerve. The motivation behind identifying such mechanisms lies in understanding the morphology of neural activity on a meaningful and analytically tractable level. The suggested merit of integrating control theory into the analysis lies in providing how a membrane effectively adapts to changes in permeability and through what governing mechanisms. The value in producing such an understanding lies in mirroring biological reality in a more formal manner than could be …
Rural Education And Rural Community Viability, Patricia Cahape Hammer
Rural Education And Rural Community Viability, Patricia Cahape Hammer
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis addresses the following research question:
In what ways do rural schools support or undermine rural community viability in the United States?
Following a methodology first recommended by C. W. Mills, the study was organized to include historical, cultural, social, and economic dimensions, which are explained in the first chapter. Chapter 2 looks back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to explore how such a diverse people--originating from Asia, Africa, North American, and Europe--all came under the power of a single ideology of progress and the superiority of urban, modified English culture. The chapter then investigates the …

Attachment And The Development Of Eating Disorders As Measured By The “Apdq”, Colleen D. O'Pell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The impact of family of origin dynamics on the development and maintenance of eating disorders is well documented in the literature. This study sought to investigate the attachment relationships and personality characteristics of eating disordered subjects by administering the Attachment and Personality Dynamics Questionnaire (APDQ). It was hypothesized that the eating disordered subjects would show a pattern of insecure attachments to primary caregivers and significant others in comparison to controls. A total of 23 eating disordered females and 297 female control subjects completed the APDQ. The t tests for the 29 scales of the APDQ revealed lower means for the …

An Investigation Of Irrigation-Related Contaminants In Water, Bottom Sediment, And Biota From Goshen County, Wyoming., Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr.
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of trace element concentrations in water, sediment, aquatic vegetation, aquatic invertebrates, waterbird eggs, and fish resulting from irrigation drainwater during 1995 in Goshen County, Wyoming. We also analyzed waterbird eggs and fish from this area for organochlorine residues and attempted to determine the nesting success of various waterbirds.
Boron concentrations were elevated (>300 ug/g dry weight) in aquatic vegetation above concentrations shown to adversely affect sensitive waterfowl; however, these concentrations are similar to those found in aquatic vegetation sampled in other areas throughout Wyoming. Mercury concentrations in aquatic vegetation, aquatic invertebrates, and fish were …

The Ability Of Cladophora To Adapt To Nutrient Changes In The Watab Watershed, Julie Schanilec
The Ability Of Cladophora To Adapt To Nutrient Changes In The Watab Watershed, Julie Schanilec
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Over the past several years, excessive algal growth has occurred in the lakes associated with Saint John's University campus. To assess the causes of this growth, the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of Lower Stumpf Lake were monitored for approximately four months. Environmental parameters of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients were assessed to determine which parameter influenced growth of the green alga Cladophora. Based on these results, controlled laboratory culture experiments were conducted to determine the nitrate and phosphate requirement and uptake for Cladophora. This alga grew well in nutrient rich Lower Stumpf Lake. However, in culture, …
Infrared Spectroscopy Of Nickel And Iron Geoporphyrins, Kewei Xu
Infrared Spectroscopy Of Nickel And Iron Geoporphyrins, Kewei Xu
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The first assignments of a number of vibrational modes to the infrared spectra of nickel and iron porphyrins are presented. The purpose of this work was to establish a library of reference spectra which can be used in the identification of geoporphyrins from coal. The infrared regions of 1700-1200 cm·' and 1200-600 cm·1 are informative and display a rich array of skeletal and alkyl substituent modes. The detailed analyses indicate that nickel and iron complexes of the four etioporphyrin (Etio) I-IV isomers exhibit notable differences at certain positions, especially in the 800-700 cm·' and 1000-900 cm·' subregions, which should enable …

Hydrogeology Of The Matunuck Hills Ponds South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Roberto Esquilin
Hydrogeology Of The Matunuck Hills Ponds South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Roberto Esquilin
Open Access Master's Theses
A detailed hydrogeological study has been applied to a series of adjacent ponds in the vicinity of the Matunuck Hills, South Kingstown, for a period of two and a half years. This study combined physical and chemical concepts in order to evaluate the surface-water/ground-water interactions, and to interpret the hydrogeologic system of the Matunuck Hills Ponds. Three different types of indicators were specifically used to assess the hydrology of the ponds: potentiometric technique, water budget calculations, and chemical analysis.
The potentiometric technique helps in determining the hydraulic gradient and evaluating the spatial distribution of recharge or discharge around the ponds. …

Phylogeny Of Polemoniaceae Based On Nuclear Ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer Dna Sequences, J. Mark Porter
Phylogeny Of Polemoniaceae Based On Nuclear Ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer Dna Sequences, J. Mark Porter
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) DNA sequences are used to estimate the phylogeny of 53 members of Polemoniaceae, representing all but two genera of the family. Fitch parsimony analysis of equal-weighted nucleotide sites result in 1080 minimal-length trees. However, when alignment-ambiguous positions are removed and an II: 10 transition to transversion weighting is imposed only eight trees are found. These data are used to address two issues: I) patterns of diversification in Polemoniaceae, and 2) the circumscription and monophyly of the genus Gilia. Although the monophyly of Polemoniaceae is well supported, relationships inferred among the earliest diverging lineages …
