Jamaican Cave Vertebrates, Donald A. Mcfarlane Jan 1997

Jamaican Cave Vertebrates, Donald A. Mcfarlane

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Limestone caves in the tropics are typically associated with a more diverse assemblage of vertebrates than are caves in temperate regions. Chapman [87] for example, has reported 37 species from the caves of Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak, whereas Bailey [43] lists only 13 for the equally cavernicolous Guadeloupe Mountains National Park, New Mexico, USA. Twenty-eight vertebrate species have been recorded from Jamaican caves. The relative importance of the five Classes differ in these three areas as shown in Table 1 (overleaf).

Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill Jan 1997

Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The heart of Mercenaria mercenaria is innervated bilaterally at the atria. A pair of cardiac nerves arise as a branch of the cerebro-visceral connective and run to the posterior end of the junction between each atrium and its efferent branchial vessel. Innervation evidently spreads over the heart, since both inhibitory and excitatory junctional potentials (IJPs and EJPs) can be recorded from the atria, the atrio-ventricular (AV) valve or the ventricle.

The cardiac nerves contain inhibitory and excitatory axons. Neural stimulation can cause increases in the frequency or amplitude of beating, depending on the strength and frequency of stimulation. Electrical stimulation …

Chemistry Journal Use And Cost: Results Of A Longitudinal Study, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Brian M. Olesko Jan 1997

Chemistry Journal Use And Cost: Results Of A Longitudinal Study, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Brian M. Olesko

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Journal-use studies were conducted in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chemistry Library in 1988, 1993, and most recently in 1996. Between 1988 and 1996, the cost of purchasing the journal collection rose 66.9% while use of the collection rose 34.2%. These increases occurred during the cancellation of over 180 chemistry journals between 1988 and 1996. The data point to a collection with obvious "top" journals that generate most of the use. While the data confirm the 80/20 rule ( 84% of use was generated by the top 100 journals in 1996, approximately 20% of the journal collection), journal use …

Helping Adolescents Deal With Loss, Benita J. Mertens Jan 1997

Helping Adolescents Deal With Loss, Benita J. Mertens

Graduate Research Papers

Adolescents can learn to cope with loss and grief through group counseling, individual counseling, family counseling, or talking with friends and family members. Because all people do not grieve in the same manner, is one of these methods of grieving suitable for all, or is one healthier than another? What feelings are common to adolescents working through loss issues? What are the age-specific variables related to loss? What types of interventions are most effective when dealing with adolescents who are mourning? All of these questions must be answered in order to learn more about how adolescents work through loss and …

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Opuntia Fragilis (Nutt.) Haw. (Cactaceae) In Stearns County, Minnesota, Eric Ribbens, Jeremy Myrom

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

We surveyed the distribution of Opuntia fragilis ( Nutt.) Haw. in Steam County, MN, where it is restricted to a few rock outcrops. To compare the populations within three sites, we mapped clusters of pads and measured each individual pad within each cluster. Pads tended to be located in a narrow band of shallow soil between the bare rock and the angiosperm-dominated plant communities growing on adjacent deeper soils. Significant differences existed between the three populations in pad widths, average pad cluster sizes, and pad appearances. Although several pads flowered, none of the flower set seed, indicating that persistence of …

Radiant Rewarming For Hypothermia: Pilot Canine Study Model, Linda M. Shecterle, John A. St. Cyr Jan 1997

Radiant Rewarming For Hypothermia: Pilot Canine Study Model, Linda M. Shecterle, John A. St. Cyr

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The purpose of this feasibility study was to determine if a radiant heat device could be used to rewarm hypothermic canines. Twenty canines were first cooled to varying degrees of hypothermia and then rewarmed. An ice water bath was used to create mild (> 32' C), moderate (29 to 32' C), or severe ( < 29· C) hypothermia, as assessed by measuring the animal's core body temperature. Two radiant heat devices, an IAD450 animal device or a thermal recovery unit (TRU), suitable for humans, were used for rewarming animals. There were no deaths or lasting significant complications during the treatment or follow up interval. Rewarming rates were: mild- 2.2· C during the first hour and 4.9' C during the second hour, moderate- 2.1" C during the first hour and 5.5' C during the second hour, or severe- 0.8' C during the first hour and 4.4' C during the second hour and 4.1' C during the third hour. Rewarming rates were comparable in either mild or moderate hypothermic conditions, however, in the severely hypothermic state, a slower rate of rewarming occurred during the first hour. Both devices proved capable of rewarming animals within acceptable time frames with no lasting clinically significant toxicity. Data accumulated and monitoring done during this study included: complete blood count, serum chemistries, blood gases, physiological hemodynamic parameters, and multiple temperature site assessment. This technique should be further explored as an alternative method of rewarming from a hypothermic to a normothermic state.

Alterations In The Microbiota Of Nestling Tree Swallows And The Effects On Their Growth And Development, Natasha Brock Jan 1997

Alterations In The Microbiota Of Nestling Tree Swallows And The Effects On Their Growth And Development, Natasha Brock

McNair Scholars Journal

A subclinical dose of broad-spectrum antibiotics (Bactrim and Clavarnox) we re given to one-half of nestling Tree Swallow (Tacbycineta bicolor) brood s on nestling day (ND) 3 and 4 while the other half of the brood received a placebo. Cloacal swabs were taken on ND5 and D15 to monitor changes in the gastrointestinal microbial community. Physical measures to track growth and development of nestlings were taken on ND5, ND15, and ND19 . Bacterial counts were low on ND5 in both treated and untreated birds. By ND15 the only component of the microbial community that was altered was the number of …

Environment And Sex Ratios Among Alaska Natives: An Historical Perspective, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Carole L. Seyfrit, Christina Bellinger Jan 1997

Environment And Sex Ratios Among Alaska Natives: An Historical Perspective, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Carole L. Seyfrit, Christina Bellinger

Sociology

Human-environment interactions can affect the sex ratios of resource-dependent societies in a variety of ways. Historical and contemporary data on Alaska Native populations illustrate such effects. Some eighteenth and early nineteenth century observers noted an excess of females, which they attributed to high mortality among hunters. Population counts in the later nineteenth century and well into the twentieth found instead an excess of men in many communities. Female infanticide was credited as the explanation: since family survival depended upon hunting success, males were more valued. Although infanticide explanations for the excess of males have been widely believed, available demographic data …

Hinge And Amino-Terminal Sequences Contribute To Solution Dimerization Of Human Progesterone Receptor, Marc J. Tetel, Soryung Jung, Patricia Carbajo, Teri Ladtkow, Debra F. Skafar, Dean P. Edwards Jan 1997

Hinge And Amino-Terminal Sequences Contribute To Solution Dimerization Of Human Progesterone Receptor, Marc J. Tetel, Soryung Jung, Patricia Carbajo, Teri Ladtkow, Debra F. Skafar, Dean P. Edwards

Faculty Research and Scholarship

We and others have shown previously that progesterone receptors (PR) form homodimers in solution in the absence of DNA and that dimers are the preferential form of receptor that binds with high affinity to target DNA. To determine the sequence regions involved in solution homodimerization, wild type PR and truncated PR proteins were expressed in an insect baculovirus system. The expression constructs included the ligand-binding domain [LBD, amino acids (aa) 688–933], the LBD plus hinge (hLBD, aa 634–933), the hLBD plus the DNA-binding domain (DhLBD, aa 538–933), and the full- length A and B isoforms of PR. PR-PR interactions were …
