The Biological Flora Of Coastal Dunes And Wetlands. Sesuvium Portulacastrum (L.) L., Robert I. Lonard, Frank W. Judd

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Sesuvium portulacastrum (L.) L. (sea purslane, cenicilla) is a pantropical, perennial, trailing herb (Aizoaceae) with pink-purple or occasionally white flowers that grows on coastal beaches of five continents and many islands. Herein we present a review of the biology of S. portulacastrum. It is an important pioneer species on sandy beaches in the subtropics and tropics, where its stoloniferous, mat-forming growth habit promotes embryonic dune formation in belts parallel to the shoreline. Colonies act as barriers to intercept and hold water and wind transported sand. Sesuvium portulacastrum's success as a colonizing species is related, in large part, to its …

Construction And Characterization Of A Large Insert Porcine Yac Library, L.J. Alexander, T. P.L. Smith, C. W. Beattie, M. F. Broom Jan 1997

Construction And Characterization Of A Large Insert Porcine Yac Library, L.J. Alexander, T. P.L. Smith, C. W. Beattie, M. F. Broom

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The recent construction of genetic linkage maps of the porcine genome (Rohrer et al. 1994, 1996; Ellegren et al. 1994; Archibald et al. 1995) allows the assignment of loci affecting heritable traits of economic importance (ETLs; Lander and Botstein 1989) to specific chromosomal segments. Markers can thus be identified that may be useful in marker-assisted selection (MAS) to increase the frequency of favorable allele(s) in resource populations (reviewed in Soller 1994). In addition, mapping of these loci creates the opportunity to identify gene(s) influencing a trait, through positional cloning or positional cnadidate gene approaches (Grootscholten et al. 1991). A positional …

Reconcilable Differences--The Interpretation Of Multilingual Treaties, Dinah Shelton Jan 1997

Reconcilable Differences--The Interpretation Of Multilingual Treaties, Dinah Shelton

UC Law SF International Law Review

The practice of authenticating treaties in several languages has grown in recent decades as multilateral agreements are concluded in the six official languages of the United Nations or the corresponding number of official languages of other sponsoring organizations. Problems of translation errors, ambiguities, and deliberate differences lead to conflicts over the content of obligations and rights contained in the treaties. The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties provides some guidance to interpreting texts authenticated in several languages, but more effort is needed during negotiations to avoid discordant texts. In addition, the author proposes that greater recourse be had to …

Horticulture and Crop Science

Searching and ovipositional behaviors by female Eretmocems sp. nr. californicus Howard on Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring infesting velvetleaf, Abutilon theophrasti Medic. (Malavaceae), and telegraph weed, Heterotheca grandiflora Nutt. (Asteraceae), were quantified. Adult female behaviors were described and quantified for E. sp. nr. californicus to establish a behavioral time budget analysis. Females departed from leaves of A. theophrasti in 83.3% of the trials, and of those that remained and searched for hosts, walking speeds averaged 0.29 mm/s. Females departed from the leaves of H. grandiflora in 44.4% of the trials, and those remaining readily searched for whitefly hosts with walking …

Biodiversity Patterns Of Littoral Tidal River Fishes In The Gulf Coastal Plain Region Of Mississippi, Chet F. Rakocinski, Mark S. Peterson, Steven J. Vanderkooy, Gregory J. Crego Jan 1997

Biodiversity Patterns Of Littoral Tidal River Fishes In The Gulf Coastal Plain Region Of Mississippi, Chet F. Rakocinski, Mark S. Peterson, Steven J. Vanderkooy, Gregory J. Crego

Gulf of Mexico Science

Fish biodiversity patterns within littoral habitats of major tidal river systems of coastal Mississippi were examined. The biodiversity of littoral tidal river fishes varied meaningfully on several spatial scales in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of Mississippi. Fish diversity typically appeared higher in littoral channel habitats than in side-pond habitats of tidal river systems. Faunal representation by three core groups of littoral fishes (cyprinids, centrarchids, and fundulids) generally differed between side-pond and channel habitats, as well as among different tidal river systems. Some of the faunal variation among systems reflected biogeographic (east/west) trends, but most of the variation reflected system …

Factors Associated With Artificial-Reef Fish Assemblages, Stephen A. Bortone, Robert K. Turpin, Richard C. Cody, Charles M. Bundrick, Ronald L. Hill

Gulf of Mexico Science

Visual census (5-min point-count, 100 m2) was used to estimate fish assemblage parameters associated with artificial reef variables from 64 reefs over a 3-yr period in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Dependent variables, recorded by divers [i.e., number of species, number of individuals, length (TL in cm), and species diversity (H')], were analyzed for their associations with potentially underlying environmental attributes using stepwise regression, TWINSPAN, and canonical correspondence analyses (CCA). The fish assemblages (dominated by haemulids, labrids, and serranids) were qualitatively and quantitatively similar to the assemblages described by others from the same general area. Pelagic fishes (carangids …

Population Size Estimates Of Sturgeon In The Suwannee River, Florida, U.S.A., Frank A. Chapman, Christine S. Hartless, Stephen H. Carr

Gulf of Mexico Science

An inventory of the Gulf of Mexico sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus de sotoi) population in the Suwannee River was conducted from 1986 to 1997. Sturgeon were collected using gill nets as the fish migrated from the ocean into the river during their annual spring migrations. The average population size for sturgeon was estimated at 3,152 ± 369 individuals using the Jolly-Seber capture-recapture model for open populations. Annual population estimates ranged from 2,097 to 5,312 individuals over a 10-yr period. The Suwannee River sturgeon population may represent one of the last viable populations of the species and may require special …

Development Of An Epifaunal Assemblage On An Estuarine Artificial Reef, Tony R. Martin, Stephen A. Bortone Jan 1997

Development Of An Epifaunal Assemblage On An Estuarine Artificial Reef, Tony R. Martin, Stephen A. Bortone

Gulf of Mexico Science

Twelve Polyolefin™ cones were placed in Choctawhatchee Bay, Okaloosa County, Florida, on 20 Oct. 1987, as an artificial reef to examine the succession of the associated epibenthic invertebrate assemblage and its relationship to environmental factors. Ninety-five epifaunal settling plates with individual surface areas of 706.5 cm2 were removed from the reefs. The epifaunal settling plates bore 124,893 organisms from 90 taxa. The number of taxa and individuals associated with the reef gradually increased from deployment in Oct. to a maximum in June. Species diversity tended to increase through the 12-mo study. Coverage by the epifauna stabilized after 4 mo …
