A Transcription-Dependent Switch Controls Competence Of Adult Neurons For Distinct Modes Of Axon Growth, Deanna S. Smith, J.H. Pate Skene Jan 1997

A Transcription-Dependent Switch Controls Competence Of Adult Neurons For Distinct Modes Of Axon Growth, Deanna S. Smith, J.H. Pate Skene

Faculty Publications

Although maturing neurons undergo a precipitous decline in the expression of genes associated with developmental axon growth, structural changes in axon arbors occur in the adult nervous system under both normal and pathological conditions. Furthermore, some neurons support extensive regrowth of long axons after nerve injury. Analysis of adult dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in culture now shows that competence for distinct types of axon growth depends on different patterns of gene expression. In the absence of ongoing transcription, newly isolated neurons can extend compact, highly branched arbors during the first day in culture. Neurons subjected to peripheral axon injury …

Basin-Wide Zonal Wind Stress And Ocean Thermal Variations In The Equatorial Pacific Ocean, Y. J. Yang, T. Y. Tang, Robert H. Weisberg Jan 1997

Basin-Wide Zonal Wind Stress And Ocean Thermal Variations In The Equatorial Pacific Ocean, Y. J. Yang, T. Y. Tang, Robert H. Weisberg

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Wind data, obtained from the model results of the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), for the equatorial Pacific Ocean from 1985 to 1992, were employed to study the basin-wide distributions for various constituents of zonal wind stress. Forcing the ocean by the individual constituent of zonal wind stress, the upper ocean thermal variation was investigated using a linear analytical ocean model. The interannual variation of zonal wind stress is largest in amplitude in the west-central part of the basin and is dominated by an eastwardly propagating wave. The upper layer thickness perturbation h shows an evolving eastward …

Vcu Voice (1997-01-13) Jan 1997

Vcu Voice (1997-01-13)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

A Eubacterial Gene Conferring Spectinomycin Resistance On Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii: Integration Into The Nuclear Genome And Gene Expression, Heriberto D. Cerutti, A. M. Johnson, N. W. Gillham, J. E. Boynton Jan 1997

A Eubacterial Gene Conferring Spectinomycin Resistance On Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii: Integration Into The Nuclear Genome And Gene Expression, Heriberto D. Cerutti, A. M. Johnson, N. W. Gillham, J. E. Boynton

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

We have constructed a dominant selectable marker for nuclear transformation of C. reinhardtii, composed of the coding sequence of the eubacterial aadA gene (conferring spectinomycin resistance) fused to the 5' and 3' untranslated regions of the endogenous RbcS2 gene. Spectinomycin-resistant transformants isolated by direct selection (1) contain the chimeric gene(s) stably integrated into the nuclear genome, (2) show cosegregation of the resistance phenotype with the introduced DNA, and (3) synthesize the expected mRNA and protein. Small linearized plasmids appeared to be inserted into the nuclear genome preferentially through their ends, with relatively few large deletions and/or rearrangements. Multiple copy transformants …

Rodent Exclusion Techniques: A Training Guide For National Park Service Employees, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo Jan 1997

Rodent Exclusion Techniques: A Training Guide For National Park Service Employees, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Rodents have been a common problem in living and working environments, probably, ever since humans began living in permanent dwellings. Even today many people believe rodent infestations are "inevitable". However, the recent appearance of Hantavirus (Sin Nombre Virus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, HPS) in the Western states has re-awakened the public to the serious health problems posed by rodents and has prompted new inquiries into more effective ways to manage infestations. This manual is designed as a training reference for making rodent control in buildings an attainable goal.

Complexity Theory And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick Jan 1997

Complexity Theory And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

I use the label, “complexity theory,” for the research program which studies nonlinear dynamics, “complexity,” “complex adaptive systems,” “artificial life,” etc., and whose intellectual Mecca in the United States is the Santa Fe Institute. I use the label, “systems theory,” for the research program which crystallized after World War II under the names of “general systems theory” and “cybernetics,” and which subsumed such postwar scientific developments as information theory, game theory, feedback control theory, and the beginnings of computer science and artificial intelligence. The central thesis of this paper is that complexity theory is a continuation and revitalization of systems …

Where Have All The Teachers Gone?, Mark Fetler Jan 1997

Where Have All The Teachers Gone?, Mark Fetler

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

A rising need for teachers is projected in California and the nation during the next decade. Sound policy for teacher preparation should not only foster a capable workforce, it should also assure that the supply of qualified teachers balances with employment demand. A conceptual model is proposed to describe the flow of individuals through teacher preparation programs and the workplace.

Synthetic Strategies For The Construction Of Enantiomeric Azanoradamantanes, Daniel Becker, Roger Nosal, Daniel L. Zabrowski, Daniel Flynn Jan 1997

Synthetic Strategies For The Construction Of Enantiomeric Azanoradamantanes, Daniel Becker, Roger Nosal, Daniel L. Zabrowski, Daniel Flynn

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The amino azanoradamantane hexahydro-2,5b-methano-IH-3aS,3aa,6aa-cyclopenta-[clpyrrole-4a-amine 1and the corresponding enantiomer ent-1 have been prepared along with benzamide derivatives SC-52491and SC-52490, respectively, which are of pharmaceutical interest. The key meso-azabicyclo[3.3.0] intermediate 3 was prepared via three separate routes: a [3+2] cycloaddition route, a radical cyclization/ionic cyclization route, and a reductive Pauson-Khand route.
