The Dissolution Of Aum Shinri Kyô As A Religious Corporation, Thomas Leo Madden
The Dissolution Of Aum Shinri Kyô As A Religious Corporation, Thomas Leo Madden
Washington International Law Journal
Because of Aum Shinri Kyô's terrorist attacks using sarin nerve gas, the Japanese government sought to revoke the religious cult's status as a religious corporation under the Religious Corporation Law. The Tokyo District Court found that, in setting up a sarin production facility, Aum had deviated from its purpose as a religious organization and had endangered the public welfare, thereby justifying an order of dissolution. The Tokyo High Court affirmed, but did not reach the issue of whether the dissolution order violated Aum's followers' right to freedom of religion as guaranteed by the Japanese Constitution. In affirming the dissolution order, …

Effects Of Lipoproteins On Cyclo-Oxygenase And Lipoxygenase Pathways In Human Platelets, S A. Saeed, R A. Memon, A H. Gilani, B H. Shah
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
The products of arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism in platelets play an important role in platelet shape change, adhesion and aggregation which may participate in the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease and thrombosis. Since lipoproteins are also involved in the pathogenesis of thrombo-embolic disorders, the effect of human lipoproteins (HDL, LDL, VLDL) on AA metabolism in human platelets was investigated. Lipoproteins were separated by density gradient zonal ultracentrifugation. The effects of lipoproteins on production of AA metabolites in human platelets i.e., thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and hydroxy-eicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) were examined using radiometric thin layer chromatography coupled with automated data integrator system. …

Aristotle On The Nature Of Logos, John P. Anton
Aristotle On The Nature Of Logos, John P. Anton
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Attention has been frequently drawn to the problems attending attempts "to trace a long progression of meanings in the history of the word logos" (Kerferd). Especially difficult proved the assigning to Aristotle a place in this long progression. One of the reasons is that we have yet to reconstruct his theory of logos. The difficulty is not so much with the complexity of the uses of the term in his works as it is with the widely recognized fact that he left no special treatise on the subject of a doctrine of logos, not to be confused with the instrumentalities …

Bennett V. Plenert: The Ninth Circuit's Application Of The Zone Of Interests Test To Citizen Suits Under The Endangered Species Act, Alyssa Wardrup
Mercer Law Review
The Ninth Circuit, in Bennett v. Plenert, ruled that plaintiffs' economic injury did not satisfy the requirements for standing under the citizen-suit provision of the Endangered Species Act ("ESA"). The Ninth Circuit imposed the zone of interests test in addition to Article III standing requirements. Under the ESA's citizen-suit provision, the zone of interests test means that plaintiffs must assert "an interest in the preservation of endangered species" to have standing. Plaintiffs appealed the Ninth Circuit's decision, and the Supreme Court has granted certiorari. The Court will likely resolve a division among the circuits in applying or not applying …

Characterization Of An Atp-Dependent Dna Ligase Encoded By Chlorella Virus Pbcv-1, C. Kiong Ho, James L. Van Etten, Stewart Shuman
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
We report that Chlorella virus PBCV-1 encodes a 298-amino-acid ATP-dependent DNA ligase. The PBCV-1 enzyme is the smallest member of the covalent nucleotidyl transferase superfamily, which includes the ATP-dependent polynucleotide ligases and the GTP-dependent RNA capping enzymes. The specificity of PBCV-1 DNA ligase was investigated by using purified recombinant protein. The enzyme catalyzed efficient strand joining on a singly nicked DNA in the presence of magnesium and ATP (Km, 75 μM). Other nucleoside triphosphates or deoxynucleoside triphosphates could not substitute for ATP. PBCV-1 ligase was unable to ligate across a 2-nucleotide gap and ligated poorly across a 1-nucleotide …

Quantification Of Weather Effects On Imaging Laser Radar, Clifton D. Stargardt
Quantification Of Weather Effects On Imaging Laser Radar, Clifton D. Stargardt
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force is investigating the use of imaging laser radar systems as autonomous guidance systems on future precision guided munitions. The Air Force's Wright Laboratory is currently testing a 1.06 micron wavelength laser radar (ladar) at Eglin Air Force Base. Since laser radiation can be susceptible to propagation problems through weather, quantitative understanding of these effects is important to the development of this weapon system. Ladar image degradation, in the form of target dropouts and false returns, was evaluated in various weather conditions. Statistical analysis of the images presented expected degrees of degradation according to visibility and rain fall …
