Development Of A Predictive Habitat Evaluation Model For Gaillardia Aestivalis (Walt.) Rock. Var. Winkleri (Cory) Turner Using Gps, Remote Sensing And Gis Techniques, Dasyam Samuel Rajasekhar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and remote sensing techniques were utilized to characterize and subsequently predict potential habitat of Gaillardia aestivalis var. Winkleri, occurring in Hardin County, TX. Field investigations along with CIR positive aerial photographs were used to study local distribution and ecological requirements (soil, site, plant associations) of the plant. Data were obtained from paper maps, aerial photographs and a Landsat TM image. Sites occupied by G. aestivalis var. Winkleri were characterized as having highly acidic soils with poor nutrient content, good drainage and rapid permeability. Along with soil types, vegetation also is an important …

Ataxia-Telangiectasia: The Hour Glass Of Life, Megan Clancy Mar 1997

Ataxia-Telangiectasia: The Hour Glass Of Life, Megan Clancy

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

This paper discusses what is Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T), and how this childhood disease could help scientists worldwide better understand more common diseases if more funding for A-T research were available. A-T originated as Louis Barr Syndrome, and the name changed as doctors noticed those patients had ataxia and telangiectasia. These same doctors also noticed that A-T happened frequently within families. Further research showed that A-T was on chromosome 11q23. The A-T gene is an important gene, and a better understanding of A-T will reveal many details of mechanisms involved in how common diseases progress.

Corticosterone And The Stress Response In Young Western Screech-Owls: Effects Of Captivity, Gender, And Activity Period, Alfred M. Dufty Jr., James R. Belthoff Mar 1997

Corticosterone And The Stress Response In Young Western Screech-Owls: Effects Of Captivity, Gender, And Activity Period, Alfred M. Dufty Jr., James R. Belthoff

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We used a standard handling protocol to examine the stress response of captive young western screech-owls during their active (nighttime) and inactive (daytime) periods and to compare the stress responses of captive and free-living owls. Circulating corticosterone levels were significantly higher during the inactive period than in the active period in this nocturnal species. This suggests that the daily pattern of corticosterone secretion is reversed in nocturnal birds and is correlated with activity period rather than with the light/dark cycle. Young (ca. 4-5 mo old) screech-owls of both sexes showed increases in plasma corticosterone up to 30 min after capture, …

Learning Science Beyond The Classroom, Linda Ramey-Gassert Mar 1997

Learning Science Beyond The Classroom, Linda Ramey-Gassert

Special Topics, General

Science education reform documents call for science to be taught in the manner that students learn best, by conducting hands-on, engaging investigations using simple everyday materials. Often overlooked in the redesign of science education, informal science learning environments such as science centers, museums, and zoos provide students with captivating science experiences that can be related closely to curricular objectives. In this article I examine a cross-section of craft knowledge and research-based literature on science learning beyond the classroom, describe informal science education programs, and discuss implications for enhanced science teaching. The article focuses on the importance of informal science learning …

Enterprise Liability And The Emerging Managed Health Care System, William M. Sage Mar 1997

Enterprise Liability And The Emerging Managed Health Care System, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

“Enterprise medical liability” is a term used to describe a system in which health care organizations bear responsibility for medical malpractice in addition to or instead of individual health professionals. Enterprise liability is in many senses a natural outgrowth of the increasing dependence of medical practice on institutional resources and expertise. Proposals for enterprise liability surfaced briefly from the academic literature into the political spotlight during the 1993-94 health care reform debate. At that time, objections to the concept as a basis for medical malpractice liability, even in a restructured health care system, were nearly universal.

Just five years later, …

A Search For The Cause Of Excess Thiol Sensitivity In A Mutant Of Escherichia Coli, Hongying Zeng Mar 1997

A Search For The Cause Of Excess Thiol Sensitivity In A Mutant Of Escherichia Coli, Hongying Zeng

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The subject of this study was a search for the biochemical basis of hypersensitivity to thiols in a mutant of Escherichia coli (IS16). A 1.3 kb chromosomal fragment from E. coli (introduced into the mutant on a plasmid) successfully abolished the hypersensitivity. This fragment contained only one intact gene, ubiX, which codes for polyprenyl-4-hydroxybenzoatelyase. The decarboxylation of octaprenyl-4- hydroxybenzoate in E. coli is catalyzed not only by the ubiX protein but also by the product of ubiD. The ubiquinone content of IS16 was only 2% of that of its parent strain, while the complementing plasmid increased it …

Salsalate Inhibition Of Thyroid Hormone Transport : A Model Of The Euthyroid Sick Syndrome, Ron Wang Mar 1997

Salsalate Inhibition Of Thyroid Hormone Transport : A Model Of The Euthyroid Sick Syndrome, Ron Wang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Multiple alterations of serum thyroid hormone metabolism have been noted in essentially all severe systemic nonthyroidal illnesses (Nil). This spectrum of abnormalities is collectively termed the “euthyroid sick syndrome”. One putative mechanism is the presence of circulating thyroid hormone binding inhibitors. Salsalate and salicylate are known to be such inhibitors. The objectives of this study are: to investigate the thyroid hormone changes induced in healthy people by salsalate, and to investigate the mechanisms of salsalate action, as a model for the euthyroid sick syndrome. This dissertation includes: (1) Study of the effect of salsalate on serum thyroid hormone levels in …

Possible Use Of Wading Birds As Beaters By Snail Kites, Boat-Tailed Grackles, And Limpkins, Robert E. Bennetts, Victoria J. Dreitz

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Foraging in single- or mixed-species flocks is common among many bird species, and the advantages of being in these flocks have been the focus of several investigations (reviewed by Moynihan 1962, Bertram 1978). It has been hypothesized that birds occurring in mixed-species flocks gain advantages from (1) reduced predation risk (e.g., Moynihan 1962, Morse 1970), (2) increased foraging efficiency (e.g., Moynihan 1962, Morse 1970), or (3) social learning (e.g., Ward and Zahavi 1973). Here, we report the anomalous occurrence of flocks consisting of species not typically found in the types of aggregations we describe and suggest the possible function of …
