The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Biomedical Program Office (JJ-G), Design Engineering Advanced Systems and Analysis Division (DM-ASD), and the University of Central Florida (UCF) Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) are currently working together on the design, fabrication, and implementation of the Advanced Life Support Automated Remote Manipulator (ALSARM). Once completed, the ALSARM robotic arm will be integrated into the Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS) Breadboard Project Biomass Production Chamber (BPC), located at the Life Sciences Support Facility (LSSF) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). This paper describes the objectives, content, and operation on one such facility, called here the Galaxy Express™. It is envisioned as an ever-evolving multimedia educational/entertainment complex where visitors can come, explore, be entertained, learn, or simply be rejuvenated with a sense of human purpose and destiny.

Since the maintenance of the appropriate levels of oxygen is essential for ensuring the success of many of the specialized experiments in space missions, such as tissue culture experiments, the continuous monitoring of partial pressures of oxygen provides important data. We are developing optical methods of monitoring not only oxygen but also many dissolved constituents in blood and tissue culture solutions. The optical system uses tiny optical fibers, which easily fit inside a fine-gauged needle, for monitoring each specimen. A cDNA was isolated from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans that encodes an endoprotease which is a member of the Kex2 family of serine endoproteases. Degenerate oligonucleotide primers were designed based on conserved regions within the active sites of known Kex2-like endoproteases, and were used for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of poly(A)⁺RNA isolated from C. elegans. A PCR product was isolated that had homology to the active sites of known furin endoproteases, and was used as a probe to screen a C. elegans cDNA library. A Kex2-like endoprotease (CelfurPC) which encoded a 692-amino-acid preproendoprotease, was identified. The …

Selected works of African writer Chinua Achebe and African American author Toni Morrison display similarities which reveal significant connections between African and African American cultures. In Achebe's Things Fall Apart and No Longer At Ease and Morrison's Sula and Song of Solomon, major characters reveal commonalities in their various relationships. Thus Okonkwo, Obi, Sula and Milkman engage in familial, spiritual and communal relationships. it is revealed that Africans and the African Americans have a bond, unlike the bond between a mother and child. Earth Sciences

Management of ecosystems at large regional or continental scales and determination of the vulnerability of ecosystems to large-scale changes in climate or atmospheric chemistry require understanding how ecosystem processes are governed at large spatial scales. A collaborative project, the Vegetation and Ecosystem Modeling and Analysis Project (VEMAP), addressed modeling of multiple resource limitation at the scale of the conterminous United States, and the responses of ecosystems to environmental change. In this paper, we evaluate the model-generated patterns of spatial variability within and between ecosystems using Century, TEM, and Biome-BGC, and the relationships between modeled water balance, nutrients, and carbon dynamics. …
