Students at risk of failure and students with emotional and behavioral disorders have been known to have lower self concepts, earn poorer grades, and have less motivation to achieve when compared to their peers. Nontraditional methods of teaching have been known to be successful with these students; however, a number of students at risk do not benefit from alternative forms of teaching. In this study interviews were used to examine the difference in perceptions of an alternative program by five students who successfully participated in the program and three students who were not permitted to return to the program. United States V. Virginia's New Gender Equal Protection Analysis With Ramifications For Pregnancy, Parenting, And Title Vii, Candace S. Kovacic-Fleischer

In this Article, Professor Kovacic-liTeischer argues that the Supreme Court's recent decision in United States v. Virginia raises gender equal protection analysis to the level of strict scrutiny. Professor Kovacic-Fleischer asserts that the Court's refusal to accept as immutable VMI's single-sex institutional design, and the Court's requirement that VMT make adjustments and alterations that will enable qualified women to undertake VM's curriculum evidences this shift in gender equal protection analysis. Professor Kovacic-Fleischer then turns to the significance of the Court's citation to California Federal Savings & Loan Association v. Guerra. She asserts that this citation indicates that the Court effectively …

The Effects Of Hydrilla Infestation On Selected Wintering Waterfowl: Santee Copper Lake System, South Carolina, William Davis

Hydrilla is an exotic aquatic weed that was introduced into Florida in the 1950's. Since that time it has spread rapidly from lake to lake throughout the southeast and beyond. The Santee Cooper lake system in eastern South Carolina was infested with the weed in the early 1980's. Since that time lake managers have sought ways to eliminate the aquatic plant and have succeeded to a great extent through the use of sterile grass carp as a biological control agent. This paper, however, contains evidence to support the view that hydrilla is actually a beneficial habitat for many species on …

The Scientific Validity Of Subjective Concepts In Models Of Animal Welfare, Françoise Wemelsfelder

Animal Welfare Collection

This paper takes a closer look at the subjectivity/objectivity relationship, as it plays a role in the science of animal welfare. It argues that subjective, experiential states in animals such as well-being and suffering are, contrary to what is often assumed, open to empirical observation and scientific assessment. The presumably purely private, inaccessible nature of such states is not an inherent property of these states, but derives from their misguided conception as ‘causal objects’ in mechanistic models of behaviour. This inevitably endows subjective experience with a ‘hidden’ status. However, subjective experience should be approached on its own conceptual grounds, i.e. …

The Role Of Alfalfa Weevil Larvae As Prey In Adult Maintenance And Reproduction By Two Ladybird Beetle Species, Douglas R. Richards

Ladybird beetles (Coccinella spp.) are important predators of pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) in alfalfa. Adult ladybird beetles also consume alternative foods such as alfalfa weevil larvae (Hypera postica) and nectar. I compared egg production and ovariole condition of Coccinella septempunctata (an Old World species introduced to North America) and Coccinella transversoguttata (an indigenous North American species) that were maintained on diets of pea aphids, alfalfa weevil larvae, sugar water ("artificial nectar"), or various combinations of these foods. In the first experiment, gravid females of both species continued to lay many eggs and had large ovarioles …

Results And Analyses Of A Landscape Scale Random Point Avian Census, Eric R. Cannon

We conducted an avian census at 897 random points documenting the presence and relative abundance of breeding bird species across 11 cover types in the Manti-La Sal National Forest. We detected 85 bird species varying in abundance from Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) encountered at 33% of the points to 11 species that were detected only once. Relative abundances of all species by cover type were reported. We found a significant linear relationship between MacArthur's alpha diversity (species number) and the structural complexity of the cover types. Isolation And Characterization Of Four Linear Plasmids In Ascosphaera Aggregata, Dakun Xu

Biology

Four extrachromosomal DNA plasmids were isolated from the entomopathogenic fungus Ascosphaera aggregata and named as pAaL10, pAaL8, pAaL2.8, and pAaL2.6 based on their host, morphology and size. DNA hybridization results suggested that pAaL10, pAaL8, pAaL2.8, and pAaL2.6 are not homologous with pAaL, a plasmid isolated from Ascosphaera apis. Extraction of DNA from intact mitochondria followed by gel electrophoretic analysis suggests pAaL10, pAaL8, pAaL2.8, and pAaL2.6 are located within the mitochondria. From hybridization results it was concluded that each of pAaL10, pAaL8, pAaL2.8, and pAaL2.6 is not homologous to mitochondrial DNA. This implies that these plasmids are all self-replicating. Individuals and populations are likely to optimize methods of food harvest and synchronize reproduction with local peaks in food supply, because animals exhibiting greater efficiency at acquiring energy or energy intensive tasks will often achieve greater survival, growth, and reproduction. Although this statement implies that foraging efficiency is optimized by selection for better foragers and optimal foraging theory owes much of its development and refinement to studies of free-living birds, the positive association of foraging proficiency and fitness has not been documented for free-ranging birds. The life and art of Bill John Roth offer a paradox to the study of folklore and folk art. The personal and public nature of Bill's art is exemplified through his mural Geographic Hieroglyphics In God's Own Handwriting. On the surface the art and artist are seemingly detached from the community, but upon closer investigation this is not the case. I have explored the notion of "outsider" art, the problems associated with artistic interpretation and the difficulties of labelling artists according to academic and elitist standards. Discovery, Identification, And Evaluation Of Antifungal Compounds Produced By Pseudomonas Syringae, Kevin N. Sorensen

Biology

New antifungal agents are needed to combat the increasing incidence of fungal diseases. Strains of Pseudomonas syringae produce cyclic lipodepsinonapeptides (CLPs) such as syringomycin, syringostatin, and syringotoxin, which could be developed as therapeutic antifungal agents. Of these CLPs, syringostatin has been difficult to produce in vitro. Syringostatin production was achieved using syringomycin minimal medium supplemented with arbutin and D-fructose, and a high cell density. Syringostatin A (SS-A) was purified in quantities sufficient to evaluate its antifungal activities. The antifungal activities and erythrocyte toxicities of syringomycin E (SR-E), SS-A, and syringotoxin B (ST-B) were evaluated. All showed fungicidal activities against most …

The Butte City Fire occurred on July 1, 1994, west of Idaho Falls, ID. Ignited from a burning flat tire, the blaze was driven by high winds that caused it to cover over 20,500 acres in just over 6.5 hours. Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) is the principal shrub species of this high dese~t rangeland. With the absence of vegetation after the fire, erosion increased tremendously. Because the fire occurred on the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, researchers were able to gather weather information from remote meteorological stations positioned on and around the site.
