Tristetraprolin-deficient [TTP (-/-)] mice exhibit a complex syndrome of myeloid hyperplasia, cachexia, dermatitis, autoimmunity, and erosive arthritis. Virtually the entire syndrome can be prevented by the repeated injection of anti-TNFα antibodies (Taylor, G.A., E. Carballo, D.M. Lee, W.S. Lai, M.J. Thompson, D.D. Patel, D.I. Schenkman, G.S. Gilkeson, H.E. Broxmeyer, B.F. Haynes, and P.J. Blackshear. 1996. Immunity. 4:445–454). In the present study, we transplanted bone marrow from TTP (-/-) and (+/+) mice into recombination activating gene-2 (-/-) mice. After a lag period of several months, marrow transplantation from the (-/-) but not the (+/+) mice resulted in the full syndrome associated …

Doris Gates (1915-1983) taught Biology at Huntley, NE from 1938-1941, North Platte from 1941-1955, and Chadron State College from 1955-1974. She lived until her death at the foot of "Rush No More Butte" south of Chadron, was a member of the North Platte Tout Bird Club, and served as President of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union and Editor of The Nebraska Bird Review.

Doris included plants and birds in her lectures on Biology, but she taught much more than that because she understood the beauty of life. She believed that beauty was in what you did rather than what you looked …

A Re-Evaluation Of The Millipede Genus Motyxia Chamberlin, With A Re-Diagnosis Of The Tribe Xystocheirini And Remarks On The Bioluminescence (Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae), Rowland M. Shelley

Motyxia Chamberlin is comprised of eight species of bioluminescent xystocheirine millipede in which the gonopodal solenomere arisess at different positions, from basally and subbasally on the acropodite to being fused with the companion acropodal branch and detaching proximad or near midlength. Previous synonymies of Amplocheir Chamberlin and Luminodesmus Loomis and Davenport under Motyxia are confirmed as is its assignment to the tribe Xystocheirini, which is redefined. Component species are M. kerna Chamberlin, the type species, monica Chamberlin, sequoiae (Loomis and Davenport), tularea (Chamberlin), sequoia (Chamberlin), pior Chamberlin, porrecta Causey and Tiemann, and tiemannim Causey. Stings Of Some Species Of Lordomyrma And Mayriella (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), Charles Kugler

The sting apparatus and pygidium are described for eight of 20 Lordomyrma species and one of five Mayriella species. The apparatus of L. epinotalis is distinctly different from that of other Lordomyrma species. Comparisons with other genera suggest affinities of species of Lordomyrma to species of Cyphoidris and Lachnomyrmex, while Mayriella abstinens Forel shares unusual features with those of Proatta butteli.

Polyplectropus Species (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae) From China, With Consideration Of Their Phylogeny, Youwen J. Li, John C. Morse

Six species of the genus Polyplectropus are recorded from the People’s Republic of China. All the species are new to science. A key to the males is given. The larva of Polyplectropus nanjingensis sp. nov. is illustrated. The phylogenetic relationships among these species and with Polyplectropus species of the New World are discussed.

West Indian Species Of Beameromyia Martin (Diptera: Asilidae), A. G. Scarbrough

The West Indian species of Beameromyia Martin are reviewed. Four new species are described, and Beameromyia insulara Martin and B. cubensis (Bigot) are redescribed. Illustrations of the genitalia and a key to the known West Indian species are included.

Gambrus Wileyi (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), A New Cryptine Wasp From Florida, Julieta Brambila

Gambrus wileyi is described from north Florida. Additional distributional data are provided for three other Florida species, G. bituminosus, G. polyphemi, and G. ultimus. Gambrus extrematis is included in this work, even though its presence in Florida is questionable.

The Ccrm Dna Methyltransferase Is Widespread In The Alpha Subdivision Of Proteobacteria, And Its Essential Functions Are Conserved In Rhizobium Meliloti And Caulobacter Crescentus, Craig Stephens, Rachel Wright, Lucy Shapiro

Biology

The Caulobacter crescentus DNA methyltransferase CcrM (M.CcrMI) methylates the adenine residue in the sequence GANTC. The CcrM DNA methyltransferase is essential for viability, but it does not appear to be part of a DNA restriction-modification system. CcrM homologs are widespread in the alpha subdivision of gram-negative bacteria. We have amplified and sequenced a 258-bp region of the cerM gene from several of these bacteria, including Rhizobium meliloti, Brucella abortus, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and Rhodobacter capsulatus. Alignment of the deduced amino acid sequences revealed that these proteins constitute a highly conserved DNA methyltransferase family. Isolation of the full-length ccrM genes from the …

Identification Of The Flii And Flij Components Of The Caulobacter Flagellar Type Iii Protein Secretion System, Craig Stephens, Chris Mohr, Charles Boyd, Janine Maddock, James Gober, Lucy Shapiro

Biology

Caulobacter crescentus is motile by virtue of a polar flagellum assembled during the predivisional stage of the cell cycle. Three mutant strains in which flagellar assembly was blocked at an early stage were isolated. The mutations in these strains mapped to an operon of two genes, fliI and fliJ, both of which are necessary for motility. fliI encodes a 50-kDa polypeptide whose sequence is closely related to that of the Salmonella typhimurium FliI protein, an ATPase thought to energize the export of flagellar subunits across the cytoplasmic membrane through a type III protein secretion system. fliJ encodes a 16-kDa hydrophilic …

Social Work Faculty Publications

The increase in the number of women and children who are homeless, particularly in the last fifteen years, has generated the innovation of shelters that combine longer term housing arrangements and social services. These organizations are usually called "transitional housing," intended to assist this population toward the economic goal of "self-sufficiency." The impact and success of this strategy is often debated. However, there has been scant research investigating how residents of this setting use skills and resources to secure housing outcomes and community re-integration. Through multiple in-depth interviews and other qualitative data collecting strategies, a conceptual model is presented which …
