The objective of this program is to expand, through support of basic research, knowledge of various areas of chemistry, physics and chemical engineering with a goal of contributing to new or improved processes for developing and using domestic energy resources in an efficient and environmentally sound manner. Each team of the Division of Chemical Sciences, Fundamental Interactions and Molecular Processes, is divided into programs that cover the various disciplines. VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

The Challenge Of Hyper-Spectral Satellite Imaging And Integer-Valued Fuzzy Sets, Maria Beltran, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks

Satellite images already produce huge amounts of data, which makes their processing a serious computational challenge. This problem will become even more complicated with the launch of multi-spectral Earth-imaging satellites that will increase the amount of information by at least two orders of magnitude. With such a huge amount of information, it is necessary to come up with data processing methods that are as fast as possible. In particular, we show that for fuzzy processing techniques, this leads to the necessity to use integer-valued fuzzy sets.

If several physical theories are consistent with the same experimental data, which theory should we choose? Physicists often choose the simplest theory; this principle (explicitly formulated by Occam) is one of the basic principles of physical reasoning. However, until recently, this principle was mainly a heuristic because it uses the informal notion of simplicity.

With the explicit notion of simplicity coming from the Algorithmic Information theory, it is possible not only to formalize this principle in a way that is consistent with its traditional usage in physics, but also to prove this principle, or, to be more precise, deduce it …

Electron Transfer Across A Peptide−Peptide Interface Within A Designed Metalloprotein, Gennady V. Kozlov, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Mechanistic studies of biological electron-transfer (ET) reactions have involved the use of surface-derivatized proteins, protein−protein complexes, and polypeptide-bridged donor−acceptor compounds. These latter studies seek to use well-defined model systems to better define the role of the intervening protein matrix in mediating biological electron transfers. However, whereas many in vivo ET reactions occur across a noncovalent protein−protein interface, the primary role of the peptide spacers found in current model systems is to provide a covalent link between the donor and acceptor sites. As such, these systems are poorly suited to probe the mechanisms of ET reactions occurring across a peptide−peptide interface.
