Microsats For Environmental Monitoring - And Some Current Canadian Initiatives, Ron Buckingham

This paper examines the usefulness of microsats for environmental monitoring. It is based in part on a study done by Routes Incorporated for the Canadian Space Agency in 1995, plus more recent information. We define microsats and their instruments as missions whose overall payload, platform, launch, ground segment and operations costs is within a $2M to $ 10M range. The paper describes several types of environmental atmospheric and earth surface monitoring task that could be achieved with microsats, e.g. observation of atmospheric phenomena such as polar stratospheric clouds, gravity waves and ozone profiles. The High-altitude Ozone Measuring and Educational Rocket (HOMER), a pilot for the NASA Student Launch Program, was a suborbital rocket investigation conducted by the Colorado Space Grant Consortium (CSGC). The HOMER mission provided: a unique educational opportunity for hands-on involvement by students in colleges and universities throughout Colorado; measurements of ozone and atmospheric constituents which affect ozone in the Earth's atmosphere; a demonstration of advanced and low-cost technologies that enable these measurements; and an intercomparison of measurement techniques. An estimated 15,000 different mRNA species are expressed in a typical mammalian cell. The differential expression of mRNAs in both a temporal and cell-specific manner determines the fate of the cell and creates the organism. Analysis of this differential gene expression has become a central aim of many laboratories attempting to understand the mechanisms underlying various biological processes. Currently, we are using a technique called differential display to analyze the differential expression of genes in cardiomyocytes. Differential display is a rapid and powerful technique that was introduced by Liang and Pardee in 1992. Since that time, it has been successfully …

SeaStar is the result of a ground-breaking arrangement between Orbital Sciences Corporation and NASA, in which the U.S. Government is procuring space-based environmental remote sensing data for research purposes from a commercial operator. The SeaStar system incorporates the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), a visible to near-infrared, multi-spectral scanning radiometer developed by the Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center (SBRC). The ocean color data provided by this mission supports more efficient and profitable environmental monitoring and marine industries. DAVID is a small satellite for advanced remote sensing purposes - designed to meet the specific requirements of today's and tomorrow's Earth observation users in the fields of environmental monitoring, hazard warning and damage assessment. The development is a joint German-Israeli co-operative project. The satellite is designed to provide earth images with high spatial and spectral resolution and good radiometric sensitivity, despite its small size and low cost. Utah State University (USU) and Parsons Engineering Science (PES) were tasked by the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence to:

( 1) Modify the three-dimensional basewide ground-water flow model for Wurtsmith Air Force Base (WAFS), Michigan (PES, 1997) based on recent investigation by ICF Kaiser (ICF).

(2) Develop contaminant transport models for OT-24 area TCE and DCE plumes. These models will use the same parameters that were used by ICF in their feasibility study ..

(3) Use the flow and transport models to develop optimal pumping strategies to achieve cleanup and capture of the plumes

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Race And Record: A Study Of Juvenile Referrals In Alaska, N. E. Schafer

The disproportionate representation of minorities in the justice system of the U.S. has been viewed with growing alarm by both researchers and policymakers. Studies of the problem tend to focus on African Americans and on the end points of the process — sentencing disparities and, especially, sentences to death at the adult level and on court outcomes and detention decisions at the juvenile level. The research presented here explores the relationship between race and prior record using juvenile referral data from Alaska. White, Alaska Native, and African American youth are compared using four years of statewide data. The research includes …
