Langmuir Monolayers As Disordered Solids: Strain-State Calculations Applied To Stearic Acid, David R. Swanson, Tadeusz Luty, Craig J. Eckhardt

This paper presents a calculational procedure to determine the equilibrium phase for a given surface pressure π. The monolayer is treated as orientationally free tails grafted to a two-dimensional net formed by the head groups of the amphiphilic molecules. The head groups form a subsystem with translational degrees of freedom characterized by strain variables in the plane of the surface, and the tail groups compose a subsystem characterized by rotational degrees of freedom. The order in the monolayer derives indirectly from the crystalline head groups through translational–rotational coupling. Publications and Research

Inhibitory components in myelin are largely responsible for the lack of regeneration in the mammalian CNS. Myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), a sialic acid binding protein and a component of myelin, is a potent inhibitor of neurite outgrowth from a variety of neurons both in vitro and in vivo. Here, we show that MAG’s sialic acid binding site is distinct from its neurite inhibitory activity. Alone, sialic acid–dependent binding of MAG to neurons is insufficient to effect inhibition of axonal growth. In the accompanying paper (James, P. F., and Zoeller, R. A. (1997) J. Biol. Chem. 272, 23532-23539), we reported the isolation of a series of mutants from the fibroblast-like cell line, CHO-K1, that are deficient in the incorporation of the long chain fatty alcohol, hexadecanol, into complex lipids. All but one of these mutants, FAA.K1B, were deficient in long-chain- fatty alcohol oxidase (FAO) activity. We have further characterized this FAO+ isolate. FAA.K1B cells displayed a 40% decrease in [9,103H]hexadecanol uptake when compared with the parent strain. Although incorporation of hexadecanol into the phospholipid fraction was decreased by 52%, the cells …

U.S. military forces are dependent on space systems for communications, navigation, and other critical support functions. As we learned in Desert Storm, however, the requirements for space capability are difficult to forecast and easy to underestimate. The current U.S. approach relies on high-capacity, high-orbit satellites. Such satellites are relatively cost-effective: the larger the satellite, the lower the cost per pound to orbit it, and the lower the cost per unit of capacity. However, cost-effectiveness is not always the appropriate standard for selecting military systems. Combat forces must be provided with the capability they need to operate and win. This paper …
