Rhetorical Byron: An Interpretation Of His Historical Tragedies, Vicki Maxine Bertolino Jan 1997

Rhetorical Byron: An Interpretation Of His Historical Tragedies, Vicki Maxine Bertolino

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis shows that Lord Byron's history plays in particular may be works of fiction, but they may also be viewed as rhetorical discourses because they can be seen as direct responses to the complex social and political issues emerging from both the Industrial and French Revolutions. This claim was demonstrated by using a contemporary concept of rhetoric, Lloyd Bitzer's "The Rhetorical Situation." The major findings of this study were that Lord Byron was a rhetorician because his plays reflected a specific rhetorical situation, yet he also failed as a rhetorician because of his selection of an abstract, idealized audience …

Hazard Communication: A Review Of The Science Underpinning The Art Of Communication For Health And Safety, Barbara Sattler, B Lippy, T Jordan

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

This report was commissioned by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration to review the state of scientific inquiry supporting our knowledge regarding key elements of chemical hazard communication programs: labeling, warnings, material safety data sheets, and worker training. This endeavor supports the international effort to harmonize laws, regulations, and consensus standards affecting the ways in which information about hazardous chemicals is communicated. The international effort can be divided into three major functions: classifying health and environmental hazards, classifying physical hazards; and communicating hazard information. This last component involves the determination of what information will be communicated to users …

Judicial Review As A Tool For The Safeguard Of Human Rights: Prospects And Problems Of The U.S. Model In Malawi, Janet Laura Banda Jan 1997

Judicial Review As A Tool For The Safeguard Of Human Rights: Prospects And Problems Of The U.S. Model In Malawi, Janet Laura Banda

LLM Theses and Essays

Judicial review is a judicial action that involves the review of an inferior legislative or executive act for conformity with a higher legal norm, with the possibility that the inferior norm may be invalidated or suspended if necessary. Although judicial review has been explicitly provided for in some written post-independence African constitutions, such review has not developed into a significant principle of African juridical democracy. This lack of development can be attributed to the emergence of dictatorships in the post-colonial era. However, Malawi’s weak judiciary system was remedied by the 1994 Constitution which gave the Malawian judiciary a central position, …

An Empirical Examination Of The Grant Induced Price And Income Effects Of Lump-Sum Intergovernmental Aid., Peter Michael Mitias Jan 1997

An Empirical Examination Of The Grant Induced Price And Income Effects Of Lump-Sum Intergovernmental Aid., Peter Michael Mitias

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work is concerned with the nature of fiscal illusion and its effect on local government spending. Fiscal illusion is hypothesized to be a source of the "flypaper effect." The flypaper effect is an empirical phenomenon of the asymmetric effects of income and intergovernmental aid on the level of local public spending in the context of demand models of the local fisc. Lump sum aid is observed to be more stimulative on the level of public expenditures than income (Gramlich and Galper 1973). As a method of explaining this phenomenon, tax-price and income illusion are incorporated into demand models of …

The Role Of Criminal Law In Policing Corporate Misconduct, Gerard E. Lynch Jan 1997

The Role Of Criminal Law In Policing Corporate Misconduct, Gerard E. Lynch

Faculty Scholarship

In the early 1990s, I spent a couple of years as Chief of the Criminal Division in the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. One of my principal responsibilities was to hear "appeals" from defense lawyers, usually, although not exclusively, in white collar crime cases. These lawyers felt that their clients should not be indicted, or that the plea offer they had received from the prosecutor in charge of the case was unduly severe. Sometimes their arguments were essentially factual contentions that the government had the wrong take on the evidence – that the …
