Rights Of Slaves And Other Owned-Animals, Alan Watson Jan 1997

Rights Of Slaves And Other Owned-Animals, Alan Watson

Animal Law Review

The scope of animal rights is much broader than the vast majority of individuals believe. People spend little time considering how our legal system's treatment of animals affects society. The law, created to protect beings from harm, has time and again proven itself a stubborn, static creation. However, through the efforts of people who have recognized the law's shortcomings and have sought to correct them, justice may eventually prevail. Unfortunately, the best means by which to accomplish justice for animals is not clear, and disagreements inevitably arise. The essays which follow are written by experts from various interdisciplinary fields at …

The Predictive Accuracy Of The Violent Offender Treatment Program Risk Assessment Scale, Ann Ward

Theses : Honours

Current methods for screening violent offenders for program eligibility are expensive and time consuming. Developers of the Violent Offender Treatment Program (VOTP) have designed 2 brief and economical instrument to screen offenders for program eligibility. The present study was undertaken to assess the reliability and predictive accuracy of the VOTP Risk Assessment Scale (RAS). Black Soldiers At Fort Hays, Kansas, 1867-1869 A Study In Civilian And Military Violence, James N. Leiker Jan 1997

Black Soldiers At Fort Hays, Kansas, 1867-1869 A Study In Civilian And Military Violence, James N. Leiker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Historians of the western army contend with many romanticized myths. Few of those myths, in recent years, have held the popular consciousness as has that of the army's first black regulars, known as "buffalo soldiers." By now, the origins of the segregated regiments are quite familiar. In 1866, with the nation's acting military force having dwindled to a fraction of its Civil War size, the Republican Congress encouraged the enlistment of newly freed slaves and northern free blacks. Assigned to remote western areas, black units played an instrumental role over the next few decades in opening the West for white …

Abolish The Juvenile Court: Youthfulness, Criminal Responsibility, And Sentencing Policy, Barry C. Feld Jan 1997

Abolish The Juvenile Court: Youthfulness, Criminal Responsibility, And Sentencing Policy, Barry C. Feld

Articles

The juvenile court system should be abolished and all juvenile offenders should be integrated into the traditional criminal court system. The offenders' age should be taken into account during sentencing. The juvenile court system is a failure because a criminal punishment system cannot also be a social welfare system.
