"Does Your Faith In God And Country Need A Boost?" Reflections Of Idealism And Identity And The Art Of Bill John Roth, Steven Warrick May 1997

"Does Your Faith In God And Country Need A Boost?" Reflections Of Idealism And Identity And The Art Of Bill John Roth, Steven Warrick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The life and art of Bill John Roth offer a paradox to the study of folklore and folk art. The personal and public nature of Bill's art is exemplified through his mural Geographic Hieroglyphics In God's Own Handwriting. On the surface the art and artist are seemingly detached from the community, but upon closer investigation this is not the case. I have explored the notion of "outsider" art, the problems associated with artistic interpretation and the difficulties of labelling artists according to academic and elitist standards. Thus the contextual background of the artist and community are important aspects of this …

A Study Of The Immune Effects Of Orally Ingested Ginseng Combined With Moderate High-Intensity Exercise In Mouse And Human Subjects, Gordon Hunter Pedersen May 1997

A Study Of The Immune Effects Of Orally Ingested Ginseng Combined With Moderate High-Intensity Exercise In Mouse And Human Subjects, Gordon Hunter Pedersen

Biology

Ginseng, an extract of the Panax ginseng plant, and exercise producing a heart rate of 82.5% of maximum were studied alone and in combination for effects on certain immune parameters in mice and young adult humans, and on development of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in mice. A motorized treadmill was used in the mouse experiments, with a clinical pulse oximeter adapted to monitor heart rates and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). Compared to infected controls whose death rate was 60%, orally administered ginseng (250 mg/kg/day) beginning 48 hours pre-CMV inoculation caused a 25% survivor increase. Exercise (six repetitions of running …

Environmental And Outdoor Education For The 21st Century, Charles Yaple May 1997

Environmental And Outdoor Education For The 21st Century, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

As we rapidly approach a new century it seems appropriate to assess the status of environmental and outdoor education and seek direction for the future. One way to do this is to ask counsel of professionals in the field. Taproot editor Charles Yaple interviewed one of the nation's leading environmental and outdoor educators: Dr. Clifford Knapp, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Faculty of Outdoor Teacher Education at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Knapp has authored more than 100 articles and several books including Just Beyond the Classroom and Lasting Lessons: A Teachers Guide to Reflecting on Experience. His teaching and scholarly …

College Students And Drug Use: A Further Analysis Of Peer Cluster Theory, Christopher Rose May 1997

College Students And Drug Use: A Further Analysis Of Peer Cluster Theory, Christopher Rose

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to test the premise of peer cluster theory which suggests that individual drug use is primarily the result of psychosocial characteristics that influence one's peer associations which, in turn, directly influences individual drug use. Using the results of a 1996 drug and alcohol survey of 1312 Western Kentucky University college students, path analysis was used to measure the influence of seven of Beauvais and Oetting's (1986) psychosocial characteristics (sex, religious importance, parental attitudes about the use of alcohol, family use of alcohol and/or drugs, success in school, age of first use, and peer associations) …

A Study Of Employment System Of Japanese Multinational Retailers In Hong Kong, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This study examines the employment system of Japanese multinational retailing corporations in Hong Kong through two case companies - Morioka and Okadaya. The human resource management (HRM) practices – recruitment and selection, remuneration, and training and development - of the companies are studied. The different HRM practices applied to different groups of employees within each case company are compared using an employment systems model. The employment system is structured and mu1ti-layered. The development of the structured employment system is then analysed in relation to the cultural and sectoral factors. It is shown that the cultural characteristics of the Japanese parent …

The Purpose And Effectiveness Of The Semi-Independent Living Skills Program For Persons With Developmental Disabilities: An Exploratory Study, Barbara Sulflow-Zaeska

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the semi-independent living skills program offered to individuals with developmental disabilities. The goal of the study was to determine what services are being provided by this program as well as to determine if and in what ways they contribute to client self-sufficiency. The study was exploratory and used quantitative and qualitative research methods. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with four county social workers and seven coordinators of the semi-independent living skills program.

Study results revealed several factors which affect the ability of clients to obtain their highest level of independence possible. Most prominent …

The Effects Of Individual, Contextual, And Moral Intensity Factors On Environmental Ethical Decision Making, Brenda L. Flannery May 1997

The Effects Of Individual, Contextual, And Moral Intensity Factors On Environmental Ethical Decision Making, Brenda L. Flannery

Management and Entrepreneurship Department Publications

Most extant studies of organizational ethical decision making have been remiss in doing one or more of the following: (a) building theoretical foundations; (b) encompassing the individual, contextual, and issue-specific determinants impacting ethical judgments; (c) offering testable hypotheses; and/or (d) establishing methodological rigor. This study confronted those challenges aiming to understand the decision intentions of top managers in the metal finishing industry concerning the treatment of hazardous wastewater. This study employed an extended version of Ajzen's (1988) theory of planned behavior. The theory accommodatingly modeled the individual (i.e., attitudes, self-efficacy, personal moral obligation), contextual (subjective norms, organizational climate, and financial …

Black English, Karen Tibbitts Filimoehala May 1997

Black English, Karen Tibbitts Filimoehala

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Black English has recently entered the media spotlight with the passing of the Ebonics resolution by the Oakland School Board on Dec. 18, 1996. In this resolution, the school board unanimously voted to recognize Black English or "Ebonics" (a term which combines the words "ebony" and "phonetics")(LeLand & Joseph, 1997, p. 78) as the primary language of many of its students, and to teach students in their primary language in order to maintain the "legitimacy and richness" of the language, and to help students master standard English. Needless to say, the resolution was met with highly charged arguments - some …

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Information And Intervention Strategies For School, Home, And Therapeutical Settings, Mindy Dawn Anderson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

I was introduced into the world of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome winter quarter, 1996. My goals for that year included researching this topic in order to understand what it was physically, behaviorally, and on a cognitive level. My assignment involved writing a research paper around those characteristics, along with the development of their speech and language, presenting my findings to my classmates, and competing at the USU Scholar's Day competition in May of 1996. I received 2nd place at this competition. During the summer of that year, I researched FAS more to receive the needed resources to compile an annotated bibliography …

The Emotional Attributes Questionnaire: Self- And Other-Reports Of Guilt And Shame, Heidi L. Eyre May 1997

The Emotional Attributes Questionnaire: Self- And Other-Reports Of Guilt And Shame, Heidi L. Eyre

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Shame and guilt are considered to be important emotions for empirical study for a variety of reasons. Developmental psychologists are interested in the emergence of shame and guilt as they relate to the child's understanding of societal and familial expectations/norms and the subsequent development of conscience (Zahn-Waxler & Kochanska, 1990). Social psychologists study how guilt and shame are used to create power differentials and restore equity to relationships (Baumeister, Stillwell, & Heatherton, 1994). Finally, clinicians have long thought shame and guilt to be involved in the development of disorders such as anxiety and depression (H.B. Lewis, 1971). However, those within …

Interpretive Implications Of Architecture In Musical Performance, Shane Fellows May 1997

Interpretive Implications Of Architecture In Musical Performance, Shane Fellows

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The purpose of the present essay is to attempt the formulation of a plausible approach to the interpretive performance of music. Such, if successful, would be of special import in the effective and thoughtful rendition of all music; but especially in those numerous cases where application of performance practice is conjectural. This does not constitute an attempt at the definition of "authentic performance". Rather it is an effort in the direction of the establishment of defensible and especially of objective interpretive guidelines. By no means do I submit that this approach is the only plausible one; but the one which …

The Relationship Between Guilt- And Shame-Proneness And Rorschach Indices Of Psychological Functioning, Julie Bingham Shiffler May 1997

The Relationship Between Guilt- And Shame-Proneness And Rorschach Indices Of Psychological Functioning, Julie Bingham Shiffler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the degrees of proneness to the self-conscious emotions of nonruminative guilt, ruminative guilt, and shame and several indices of psychological functioning, including depression, narcissism, anger, dysphoric affect, cooperation, need for affection, and self-inspection, in a college population. Gender differences were also examined.

A measure of psychological functioning (the Rorschach) and a measure of guilt- and shame-proneness (the Test of Self-Conscious Affect--Modified) were administered to 91 college students (43 males and 48 females). Females reported higher levels of all three self-conscious emotions. The only gender difference found among the psychological …

An Investigation Of The Psychometric Properties And Factor Structure Of The Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms Rating Scale For Children And Adolescents, Melissa Lea Holland May 1997

An Investigation Of The Psychometric Properties And Factor Structure Of The Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms Rating Scale For Children And Adolescents, Melissa Lea Holland

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequent problems for which children are referred to mental health clinics in the United States, affecting approximately 3-5% of the childhood population. Although adequate assessment and identification of this disorder is imperative, most of the currently existing rating scales available to assess for ADHD in the childhood population are inadequate. The present research study involved the investigation of the factor structure and psychometric properties of a new behavior rating scale, the ADHD Symptoms Rating Scale (ADHD-SRS), developed for the assessment of ADHD in the school-age (K-12) population.

The participants in this …

An Investigation Of Internalizing Social-Emotional Characteristics In A Sample Of Lakota Sioux Children, Michael Shawn Williams May 1997

An Investigation Of Internalizing Social-Emotional Characteristics In A Sample Of Lakota Sioux Children, Michael Shawn Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has only been recently that research in childhood psychopathology has focused on a group of disorders referred to as internalizing disorders. Internalizing disorders can include such problems as depression. anxiety, social withdrawal, and somatic complaints.

Even though research has begun to focus on internalizing disorders with majority children. there has been very little research conducted on ethnic minority children, Native American children in particular. The present study involved obtaining a Native American sample and determining their internalizing symptomology utilizing the Internalizing Symptom Scale for Children (ISSC), the Reynolds Child Depression Scale (RCDS), and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory for …

The Relationship Between Weather And Children's Behavior: A Study Of Teacher Perceptions, Carrie Dabb May 1997

The Relationship Between Weather And Children's Behavior: A Study Of Teacher Perceptions, Carrie Dabb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The weather is an ever present and uncontrollable element in our lives. Only a handful of studies has addressed the relationship between weather and the behavior of children, although anecdotal and intuitive evidence of this relationship abounds. The purpose of this study was to observe the behavior of groups of elementary school-aged children in their classroom ecology during different phases of the weather cycle as observed by their teachers, observe any behavioral differences between girls and boys, and observe if any weather -related differences exist between the behavior of younger and older children. A model of the direct and indirect …

The Other Side Of Distance Education: Learner Interaction At Remote Sites, Beth Walden May 1997

The Other Side Of Distance Education: Learner Interaction At Remote Sites, Beth Walden

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation describes the observations of the interaction of adult learners at remote distance education sites. The researcher audited 11 complete courses at four receive sites during two academic terms. The observations were done in the Com-Net, audio-graphic system provided by Utah State University. The courses were provided for university credit to adults around the state.

The research was designed to answer three research questions:

1. What interactions do learners at a distance exhibit in their educational setting?

2. What observable events appear to prompt the beginning and ending of the learners' interactions?

3. What observable outcomes result from the …

Genetic Markers And Duodenal Ulcer, Anjum Shahid, Sarwar J. Zuberi, Anwar Ali Siddiqui, Muhamined A. Waqar Muhamined A. Waqar Muhamined A. Waqar

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Serum pepsinogen, ui-antitrypsin (ui-AT) and blood groups were studied as genetic markets in 32 patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer and 44 control subjects with no family history of ulcer disease. Serum pepsinogen was detennined by the modified method of Edward et al7, a1-AT by single radial hnmunodiffusion8 (RID) and phenotyping was carried out by isoelectric focusing (IEF)9. Duodenal ulcer patients with hyper- pepsinogenemia (28%) and low serum ui-AT (35%) had a dominant blood group 0, lower mean age, an early onset of disease, a higher frequency of gastrointestinal (CI) bleeding and ulcer perforation. These parameters were found considerably different …
