The Portrayal Of Enemies In Propaganda During The Russian And French Revolutions, Carole Reid May 1997

The Portrayal Of Enemies In Propaganda During The Russian And French Revolutions, Carole Reid

Senior Scholar Papers

This study investigates propaganda aimed at depicting "the enemy" during the Terror period of the French Revolution (1792-1794) and during the Revolutionary and Civil War periods in Russia (1917-1920). The two periods under consideration are congruous for several reasons. First, during each period the regime in control solidified its power and became more repressive in an effort to further its revolutionary agenda. Both the Jacobins and the Bolsheviks were minority groups who gained control of countries in transition, and each government believed that unity among the people was essential in order to lead their country forward. When the Jacobins gained …

Senior Scholar Papers

Amanda Sprang spent nine months, from September of 1995 to May of 1996, studying at Colby College's program in St. Petersburg, Russia. The following work is a collection of twelve essays about life in the New Russia. The essays are framed by a foreword and an epilogue that help place the entire work in a historical context. Although the theme of each essay emerges from a particular …

Effects Of The Media On Parents And Teachers In Regard To Reading Aloud To Children, Darwin Spiller May 1997

Effects Of The Media On Parents And Teachers In Regard To Reading Aloud To Children, Darwin Spiller

McCabe Thesis Collection

Reading aloud to children has always been a part of classroom instruction, but it has been neglected in recent years because of time constraints in the classroom due to the requirement for accountability, competency testing, and other demands on time. The media, however, point out that reading aloud to children as young as one year of age will increase vocabulary, improve listening skills, and enhance ability to comprehend. It would appear that many parents and teachers hear the message but do not take this advice seriously.

The purpose of this study is to establish whether the media has influenced the …

A Comparison Of Student Perceptions In An Alternative School, Kari Mueller-Fuentes May 1997

A Comparison Of Student Perceptions In An Alternative School, Kari Mueller-Fuentes

Theses & Honors Papers

Students at risk of failure and students with emotional and behavioral disorders have been known to have lower self concepts, earn poorer grades, and have less motivation to achieve when compared to their peers. Nontraditional methods of teaching have been known to be successful with these students; however, a number of students at risk do not benefit from alternative forms of teaching. In this study interviews were used to examine the difference in perceptions of an alternative program by five students who successfully participated in the program and three students who were not permitted to return to the program. Sociomoral …

The Scientific Validity Of Subjective Concepts In Models Of Animal Welfare, Françoise Wemelsfelder May 1997

The Scientific Validity Of Subjective Concepts In Models Of Animal Welfare, Françoise Wemelsfelder

Animal Welfare Collection

This paper takes a closer look at the subjectivity/objectivity relationship, as it plays a role in the science of animal welfare. It argues that subjective, experiential states in animals such as well-being and suffering are, contrary to what is often assumed, open to empirical observation and scientific assessment. The presumably purely private, inaccessible nature of such states is not an inherent property of these states, but derives from their misguided conception as ‘causal objects’ in mechanistic models of behaviour. This inevitably endows subjective experience with a ‘hidden’ status. However, subjective experience should be approached on its own conceptual grounds, i.e. …

Public Education Supply And Student Performance, Michael L. Marlow May 1997

Public Education Supply And Student Performance, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

This paper develops a model of public exchange whereby voters and education policy makers exchange with one another within school districts. Because school district consolidation lowers alternatives to voters-parents, consolidation is hypothesized to raise public education spending because weakened intergovernmental competition allows policy makers to promote their own utility, rather than that of constituents. Models of public education spending and academic performance are estimated over 1988-1990. While evidence indicates little support for the traditional treatment of the Leviathan hypothesis that greater competition lowers public spending, this paper argues that education spending by itself does not fully provide a valid test …

Evangelization Or Proselytism Of Hispanics? A Pentecostal Perspective, Cecil M. Robeck Jr.

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

In this essay, based on an address to the US.
