Evaluation Of Patient Satisfaction In The Hypertension Management Clinic, Charu Bahuguna

Master's Projects

Hypertension is a disease that afflicts 50 million Americans. Hypertension is a major risk factor that contributes to coronary, renal, and cerebral artery diseases. In an effort to better serve the patients afflicted with hypertension, a major health maintenance organization has developed a nurse managed hypertension clinic. This hypertension clinic functions in accordance with the Joint National Commission on Hypertension guidelines. This study evaluated the satisfaction of those patients that were served by the health maintenance organization's clinic. The results of the study reflected that, overall, most of the patients surveyed were satisfied by the services they received in the …

Progressive Muscle Relaxation: A Stress Management Program For Nursing Students, Susan Cunningham May 1997

Progressive Muscle Relaxation: A Stress Management Program For Nursing Students, Susan Cunningham

Master's Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the use of progressive muscle relaxation reduced the physical complaints of stress among nursing students. This pilot quasi-experimental study used a pretest-posttest design with a convenience sample of five volunteers. Data were collected by the use of the stress-related complaint scale. In this 5-week intervention, students learned about stress management and practiced the use of this progressive muscle relaxation technique as a method for reducing the stress in their life. Stress-related symptoms rated as irritating or higher (3 on a 5 point scale) were tension headaches (3 .2), frequent …

An Investigation Of The Technology-Related Courses And Experiences In Five University Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs, Julie R. Mandes May 1997

An Investigation Of The Technology-Related Courses And Experiences In Five University Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs, Julie R. Mandes

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most relevant issues facing schools today is the incorporation of technology into classroom instruction. The literature reveals that knowledge is the most critical factor which determines the degree to which teachers integrate technology into their instruction. Teachers with high levels of anxiety are less likely to integrate technology into their curricula. Elementary school teachers are not generally comfortable and skilled in the use of instructional technology and are therefore unable to exploit its potential. It was the purpose of this study to define whether or not there is a need for undergraduate teacher education programs to further …

Accelerated Reader: A Study Of The Effects On Reading Comprehension And Attitudes In The Fifth Grade, Christine Welk Clegg

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if fifth graders, using the Accelerated Reader, a computer-based reading motivation and management program, will demonstrate an increase in reading comprehension scores as tested by their performance in a pre and posttest using the reading comprehension portion of the Metropolitan Achievement Tests. This study will also measure any increase in favorable reading attitudes as measured by a pre and posttest using the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey by McKenna and Kear.

Two classes were selected from the fifth grade at D'Ippolito Intermediate School in Vineland, New Jersey to participate in this study. Both …

The Relationship Between Thermoregulatory And Haemodynamic Responses Of The Skin To Relaxation And Stress, Paul O. Nketia May 1997

The Relationship Between Thermoregulatory And Haemodynamic Responses Of The Skin To Relaxation And Stress, Paul O. Nketia

Theses

The present study investigated the effects of stress and relaxation on (1) EEG coherence and (2) peripheral blood flow.

EEG coherence of two meditators in two different but adjacent rooms was measured during eyes opened, eyes closed, single meditation and group meditation. The skin temperatures of the subjects together with their room temperatures were also recorded. EEG coherence plots (Cospar) showed a spread out of the alpha band to the beta, theta and occasionally to the delta wave bands during group meditation. The area above the 0.98 coherence threshold in the alpha band was greater during group meditation than during …

Democratic Temperament: The Legacy Of William James, Joshua I. Miller May 1997

Democratic Temperament: The Legacy Of William James, Joshua I. Miller

Kansas Open Books

Nineteenth-century psychologist and pragmatist philosopher William James is rarely considered a political theorist. Renowned as the author of The Principles of Psychology and The Varieties of Religious Experience, James is often viewed as a radical individualist with no interest in politics; yet he was a critic of imperialism and absolutism and an advocate of tolerance, and his writing includes a penetrating analysis of political psychology. This first book by a political theorist devoted exclusively to James's theory argues that political concerns were in fact central to his intellectual work. Joshua Miller links James to the contemporary public dialogue by treating …

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare May 1997

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Recent work in the area of cognitive research in mathematics education focuses on detailed examinations of the learning process of students and how this process is affected by current innovations in the classroom, including collaborative learning and the use of computers and interactive software. Much of this work is supported by the learning framework of constructivism, a school of thought which is based on the work and writings of Jean Piaget. Piaget, a French psychologist in the mid-twentieth century, observed the learning behavior of children and concluded that individuals construct their own knowledge by creating mental structures which explain their …

The Influence Of Judaism On American Psychology, Morton Isaacs May 1997

The Influence Of Judaism On American Psychology, Morton Isaacs

Presentations and other scholarship

Although the beginnings of psychology as a discipline were present from the late nineteenth century, the field truly began to differentiate itself from philosophy in American during the twentieth century. Beginning in these formative years and continuing to the present, Jews have contributed greatly to the topics that occupied psychology in many areas. Rather than see this as a coincidence, it is maintained that central values and concepts of Judaism induced Jews both to be attracted to and to shape the direction in which psychology grew. Examples of major contributors from the areas of individual personality development and therapy and …

The Effect Of Radio Distance Education On Rowan University's Image, Gregory C. Potter Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study determined the effects a distance education course on Rowan University's campus radio station has on the image of the institution. The study also examined how a distance education program could enable Rowan to reach the goals of its strategic plan.

Four focus groups of Rowan University students revealed their attitudes about the university's image, distance education, radio as a medium for distance education and what effects distance education has on collegiate image. The focus groups included traditional and non-traditional students, students enrolled in the radio distance education course at Rowan University and students not enrolled in the course. …
