Defying The Odds: The Christian Coalition In The Life Cycle Of The Religious Right, Kathleen S Espin
Defying The Odds: The Christian Coalition In The Life Cycle Of The Religious Right, Kathleen S Espin
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
According to the established theories on the life cycle of social movements, the Maintenance Stage of a movement is a critical time that marks a crossroads. One path leads to victory and the other to oblivion. The odds are strongly against victory for any social movement because the bureaucratic necessities for long-term maintenance of a movement siphon off spontaneity, excitement, and "esprit de corps." Few social movements are totally successful and many are absorbed or cooped by established institutions. This study examines how the Religious Right, under the leadership of the Christian Coalition, has defied the odds and has become …

Currency Boards, Expectations And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson
Currency Boards, Expectations And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
Adopting the exchange rate as a nominal anchor for monetary stabilization has proved costly in a number of countries as inflationary inertia produces severe real exchange rate appreciation. What causes inflation persistence? Complementary to existing explanation such as staggered contracts and low credibility, we note that the introduction of a new monetary rule, such as a fixed exchange rate reduces inflationary expectations immediately to the target level only if all agents understand the implications of the rule.

Principles And Passions: The Intersection Of Abortion And Gun Rights , Nicholas J. Johnson
Principles And Passions: The Intersection Of Abortion And Gun Rights , Nicholas J. Johnson
Faculty Scholarship
In this article, Professor Nicholas J. Johnson explores the parallels between the right of armed self-defense and the woman's right to abortion. Professor Johnson demonstrates that the theories and principles advanced to support the abortion right intersect substantially with an individual's right to armed self-defense. Professor Johnson uncovers common ground between the gun and abortion rights - two rights that have come to symbolize society's deepest social and cultural divisions - divisions that prompt many to embrace the abortion right while summarily rejecting the gun right. Unreflective disparagement of the gun right, he argues, threatens the vitality of the abortion …
Economic Lessons Of The Kobe Earthquake, G. Horwich
Economic Lessons Of The Kobe Earthquake, G. Horwich
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
The earthquake that struck the Japanese port city of Kobe on January 17, 1995, was the most severe quake ever to strike a modern urban area. It has become the most studied, analyzed, and discussed natural disaster in history. What I propose to add to this dialogue is an economist's overview of what he saw in Kobe 19 months after the event and what he learned during the ensuing 6 months.

The Woodhull Study On Nursing And The Media: Health Care's Invisible Partner: Final Report, Sigma Theta Tau International
The Woodhull Study On Nursing And The Media: Health Care's Invisible Partner: Final Report, Sigma Theta Tau International
Sigma Resource Papers
This important study analyzes 20,000 articles (2,600 health articles) published in 16 US newspapers, magazines and health trade publications in September 1997. Less than 1% of the articles in the magazines US News & World Report, Time, Newsweek and Business Week referenced a nurse. Similarly, nurses were referenced in less than 4% of the 2,101 newspaper health articles from 7 newspapers across the US.
The Woodhull Study on Nursing and the Media initiated an important dialogue for nurses and journalists to develop more effective communication channels with those they both serve: the American public. Nurses should help journalists obtain stories …

Vibration Analysis Of Textile Air Distribution Systems, Alan Bateman
Vibration Analysis Of Textile Air Distribution Systems, Alan Bateman
Theses
Textile air-distribution systems are air permeable materials used for air delivery applications where problems associated with solid steel ducting, such as condensation, local draughts, noise and hygiene are to be eliminated. The aim of this project was to investigate the causes of duct wall vibration in textile air-distribution systems. This was undertaken by consideration of the three aspects of a fluid dynamics problem; a) theoretical analysis, b) experimental analysis and c) analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics.
The aspect of textile air-distribution systems is still at an infancy stage and no publicised research was encountered in this area. Thus, the approach …

Physical, Chemical, And Microbial Analysis Of Domestic Wastewater Treated By Small Constructed Wetlands Designed For Individual Households., Keith R. Hench
Physical, Chemical, And Microbial Analysis Of Domestic Wastewater Treated By Small Constructed Wetlands Designed For Individual Households., Keith R. Hench
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many small communities located in rural areas of the United States lack adequate domestic wastewater treatment plants. Constructed wetlands are being promoted as low-cost, low-maintenance systems for treatment of domestic wastewater in areas where standard septic tanks fail. In order to evaluate the efficacy of small constructed wetlands, 20 small-scale wetlands mesocosms (100 gal each) containing five plant treatments (no plants/control, Typha, Scirpus, and Juncus monocultures, and all three species combined) were planted into pea gravel at either 18 or 24 inches in depth. Each mesocosm received 5 gal/day of primary-treated domestic sewage. Mesocosms were monitored on a monthly basis …

Study Of Livestock Production Levels In Three Communities Near The City Of Riobamba, Raul Rolando Nuñez Lopez
Study Of Livestock Production Levels In Three Communities Near The City Of Riobamba, Raul Rolando Nuñez Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
This study was done by administering household surveys to 50% of the families in the three communities. Families were selected through stratified random sampling. This allowed us to determine how much families are exploiting species that have a significant level of production as well as whether they use them for a commercial activity or subsistence. With regard to cows, 60.40 ± 4.72% of families use them. Each family has an average of 1.68 ± 0.21 cows. Productive cows make up 36.9% of the above percentage, which is a majority. The measured rate of production was 6.48 ± 0.25 L/cow/day. Overall, …

Bovine Mastitis Pathogens In New York Andpennsylvania: Prevalence And Effects On Somatic Cell Count And Milk Production, David J. Wilson, R. N. Gonzalez, H. H. Das
Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
Milk samples were collected from 108,312 dairy cows during 1601 farm visits made between January 1991 and June 1995. The herd visits were made by personnel from the Central Laboratory of the Quality Milk Promotion Services at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) to farms located in central New York and northern Pennsylvania. Dairy Herd Improvement Association records were available for 32,978 cows in 327 herds. Intramammary infections, as defined by positive milk cultures, were present in 48.5% of all cows and in 36.3% of cows in herds enrolled in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Over 75% of the intramammary infections were …

Sport, Media And Sponsor: The Shifting Balance Of Power In The Sports Network, Rosita Wolfe, Tony Meenaghan, Paul O'Sullivan
Articles
As sport has become an important social and economic activity it is increasingly the subject of management analysis. This article adopts a network perspective to examine developments in the sports network. In particular, it examines relationships between network "actors" such as corporate sponsors, media and the owners of sport and analyses the changing balance of power in the sports network. Key media drivers of change in the network such as cable and satellite television, pay-per-view and digital technology are examined while the influence of sponsors and the issue of ambush marketing also influence the location of power in the sports …
Law And Governance Affecting The Resolution Of Academic And Disciplinary Disputes At Scottish Universities: An American Perspective, Fernand N. Dutile
Law And Governance Affecting The Resolution Of Academic And Disciplinary Disputes At Scottish Universities: An American Perspective, Fernand N. Dutile
Journal Articles
At the entrance to St. Mary's College, a part of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, one encounters the opening words of the Gospel of St. John: "In principio erat verbum." Eschewing the usual translation, students there irreverently render the passage thus: "The Principal has the last word." The existence of the position of Principal in a university and the substantial power of that official cause only part of the fascination experienced by the American observer of universities in Scotland. This article will assess, from an American perspective, the law and governance affecting the resolution of academic and disciplinary …
Why Chinese Wildlife Disappears As Cites Spreads, John Copeland Nagle
Why Chinese Wildlife Disappears As Cites Spreads, John Copeland Nagle
Journal Articles
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) proves that popularity does not assure success. CITES is one of the oldest and most popular international environmental treaties. Yet after twenty-three years and the approval of over 125 nations, wildlife continues to become extinct and endangered at an unhindered rate. Why?
The explanation for this paradox can be found by comparing the state of wildlife in China and the United States. Both countries are parties to CITES. Their efforts to enforce CITES are very different, but they both reveal the limitations of the current treaty …
