A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight Jan 1997

A Mormon Cultural Study Of Musical Preference, Alden L. Weight

Theses and Dissertations

Music is an important yet relatively unnoticed part of the everyday world almost all of us take for granted. Whether in the car, watching television, shopping, at work or at home, even waking up in the morning or going to sleep at night, and so forth, music surrounds us, soothes us, disturbs us, and occasionally goes so far as to persuade us. Although music plays a significant role in many areas of life, its relationship to society is especially evident in the religious sphere. Therefore, the religious sphere is an ideal place to examine what music does and what it …

Theses and Dissertations

This study tested a multivariate model, which included peer influences, religiosity, personality traits, school experiences, and family characteristics, in predicting juvenile delinquency. The model compared two samples of youth belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (L.D.S.). A mail questionnaire and three follow-up mailings were sent to 1,078 youth living in the Pacific Northwest and 1,849 youth living in Utah county. The overall response rate for the sample was 63 percent. Extensive measures were used in assessing the variables included in the model. Structural equation modeling (LISREL) was used in the analysis because of its capacity to …

Crisis Of Affiliation: The Merger Of Arkansas Agricultural And Mechanical College With The University Of Arkansas, Gary S. Gaston Jan 1997

Crisis Of Affiliation: The Merger Of Arkansas Agricultural And Mechanical College With The University Of Arkansas, Gary S. Gaston

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the applicability of Kurt Lewin's Force Field Theory to the merger of Arkansas A&M College and the University of Arkansas System in 1971. The merger followed Lewin's change process: unfreezing, moving, and refreezing. This study also examined the applicability of Hugh Thompson's '21 Suggestions for a Successful Merger' as a framework for addressing the variety of issues in an institutional merger. This examination asked five questions: What were the forces moving Arkansas A&M toward a merger? What were the forces opposing the merger? What preparation went into the merger? What was the political process for the merger? …

Spectral And Temporal Response Of Optical Nonlinearities, Arthur Dogariu Jan 1997

Spectral And Temporal Response Of Optical Nonlinearities, Arthur Dogariu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reports a series of experiments directed towards nonlinear material characterization. A series of organic molecules, semiconductors, liquid crystals and inorganic clusters are investigated with Z-Scan and excite-probe measurements in order to determine the magnitude and dynamics of their nonlinear absorption and refraction. Much of this work is motivated by our search for a better optical limiter. The nonlinear absorption mechanism leading to optical limiting is investigated and its physical parameters are determined. The reverse saturable absorption (RSA) spectrum of several organic dyes is obtained in the visible in a single measurement by using an ultrafast nonlinear spectrometer. This …

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua Jan 1997

Hope And Despair For A New South Africa: The Limits Of Rights Discourse, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

This article is a critique of the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. It explores the assumptions employed by the African National Congress and the international community to construct a post-apartheid society. It argues that the reliance on the law as the key medium for economic, social, and political change was insufficient to transform the legacy of apartheid. Instead, the piece contends that apartheid was privatized and its beneficiaries protected under the new dispensation. It makes the argument that the lot of the black majority is unlikely to be changed such gradualist approach to social change.

Free-Fall Drops, Tosses And Impacts Measured In The Small Parcel International Overnight Air Distribution Environment, Ann Marie Stevenson

Theses

This study investigated the frequency and magnitude of free-fall drops, tosses and impacts encountered by a small package during overnight air transportation between Memphis, Tennessee and Gennevilliers, France. It was assumed that the package would experience similar hazards during each trip through this distribution environment. It was also assumed that the hazards the package encountered between the United States and France would be similar to the hazards it encountered between France and the United States. The package was instrumented with a data recorder to measure and record the events experienced by the package. The largest drop occurred from a height …

Temperature Transfer Due To Induction Sealing, Scott Evans Jan 1997

Temperature Transfer Due To Induction Sealing, Scott Evans

Theses

This thesis investigates the temperature recorded during the induction sealing process within the headspace of a container. The topic for this thesis stemmed from a question of whether or not the product inside an induction sealed bottle has the potential of being adversely affected by heat generated during the induction sealing process on a packaging line during production. The thesis demonstrated the heat generated and temperature recorded utilizing irreversible chemical temperature indicating labels during the induction sealing process on a standard bottle packaging line with an aluminum foil liner/innerseal. Based on the results of this study, the following trends were …

The Effect Of Cyclic Environment On The Compression Strength Of Curtain Coated Corrugated Containers, Paijit Sangchai Jan 1997

The Effect Of Cyclic Environment On The Compression Strength Of Curtain Coated Corrugated Containers, Paijit Sangchai

Theses

Cyclic changes in temperature and humidity in real-life distribution environments decrease BCT and life-span of standard corrugated containers. As a result, BCT obtained from testing at standard TAPPI environment may be inadequate to protect the products inside from damages during real-life distribution. The corrugated containers users need to understand this concept in order to design a proper corrugated containers at a cost-efficient price that can retain BCT in these extreme temperature and humidity changes environments. Wax curtain coating is one of the most commonly used techniques to retain BCT of corrugated containers that are distributed in short-term high humidity environment, …

Optical Character Categorization: Clustering As It Applies To Ocr, Jennifer Greenwald Jan 1997

Optical Character Categorization: Clustering As It Applies To Ocr, Jennifer Greenwald

Theses

I applied clustering analysis to the problem of creating tagged training data for optical character recognition (OCR). The creation of labeled character data by hand is a slow and cumbersome process. My belief is that clustering methods can be applied to character data before tagging it, allowing the operator to label entire groups of characters at once and greatly speeding the time in which tagged character data can be generated. This thesis will provide proof of concept as a basis for more in depth research and eventually the creation of a sophisticated application utilizing these techniques for the generation of …

Factors That Influence Independent Reading Habits, Janice Rose Rosauer

Graduate Research Papers

As our society begins to look for ways to raise the literacy level in the United States the focus is centered on our schools and helping students become life long readers. Questions have arisen about why some students have developed an aversion to reading at early ages and why some students who have strong reading skills choose not to read on a regular basis. The purpose of this research was to explore upper elementary students' attitudes about reading and explore different factors that influence these students to develop the motivation to engage in independent reading.

Parents as well as the …

Property And The First Amendment, Mark Cordes Jan 1997

Property And The First Amendment, Mark Cordes

University of Richmond Law Review

The last decade has seen an increased recognition of property rights in Supreme Court analysis. This is most evident in the area of takings law, where the Court has on at least four occasions expanded property rights relative to government regulation. Perhaps even more significant than the results themselves has been the Court's tone in these decisions, where it has emphasized that property rights are to be taken seriously and are not a "poor relation" to other constitutional safeguards. This has led some commentators to suggest that recognition of property rights is becoming a primary agenda item of the Court.
