Foucault In Cyberspace: Surveillance, Sovereignty, And Hardwired Censors, James Boyle Jan 1997

Foucault In Cyberspace: Surveillance, Sovereignty, And Hardwired Censors, James Boyle

Faculty Scholarship

This is an essay about law in cyberspace. I focus on three interdependent phenomena: a set of political and legal assumptions that I call the jurisprudence of digital libertarianism, a separate but related set of beliefs about the state's supposed inability to regulate the Internet, and a preference for technological solutions to hard legal issues on-line. I make the familiar criticism that digital libertarianism is inadequate because of its blindness towards the effects of private power, and the less familiar claim that digital libertarianism is also surprisingly blind to the state's own power in cyberspace. In fact, I argue that …

Empowering Teachers, Empowering Leadership: A Multisite Case Study Of School Restructuring And Accountability For Student Achievement, Sally Jean Bennett Edd Jan 1997

Empowering Teachers, Empowering Leadership: A Multisite Case Study Of School Restructuring And Accountability For Student Achievement, Sally Jean Bennett Edd

Dissertations

Accountability is the watchword of the 1990s, particularly in education. In exchange for greater flexibility and autonomy, schools have been asked to assume greater accountability for student outcomes. Implicit in this shift of authority and responsibility is the belief that changing the locus of control will result in changes in student achievement. Decentralizing accountability thus has multiple implications for the teaching and learning process, governance and decision making, and school site leadership. In 1993, San Diego City Schools adopted a student achievement accountability policy and initiated a demonstration program to develop an accountability system model for the district. This ethnographically-oriented …

Political Formation Of Korean Americans In Los Angeles: Visions Of Political Power, 1992-1996, Edward J.W. Park Jan 1997

Political Formation Of Korean Americans In Los Angeles: Visions Of Political Power, 1992-1996, Edward J.W. Park

Asian and Asian American Studies Faculty Works

Since the Los Angeles Civil Unrest of 1992, Korean Americans have taken their first steps toward mainstream political participation and inclusion. From its initial stages, their struggle for political empowerment has been marked by profound partisan divisions. These divisions implicate a range of issues and point to pivotal concerns that organize and divide the political formation of the Korean American community. As the Korean American community is being transformed by its political engagement, mainstream politics in Los Angeles is also undergoing change as it confronts the new issues and complexities Korean Americans have brought to the city's political agenda.

Seasonal And Low Frequency Variability In The Meridional Heat Flux At 36°N In The North Atlantic, Olga T. Sato Jan 1997

Seasonal And Low Frequency Variability In The Meridional Heat Flux At 36°N In The North Atlantic, Olga T. Sato

Open Access Dissertations

Historical hydrographic sections are used to investigate the seasonal and low frequency variability in the meridional heat flux at 36°N in the North Atlantic. At first, eleven transatlantic sections were selected from the World Ocean Atlas 1994. There is a second set of data set which consists of sections from four sectors along 36°N which combined cover the entire basin. These sectors are: the Slope Water, the Gulf Stream, the Sargasso Sea and the Mid-ocean. The Gulf Stream is the most sampled sector with 140 sections. The horizontal interpolation of the Gulf Stream sections required a parametric model which takes …

Toward The Universal, Jennifer Bracy Jan 1997

Toward The Universal, Jennifer Bracy

Theses and Dissertations

This creative project is concerned with archetypal forms expressed in art, design and communication, from Neolithic rock carvings and native American Indian petroglyphs to individual graphic languages that look to the 'primitives' like those of Joan Miro and Neville Brody. It is my belief that through the study of this diverse collection of graphic signs and archetypal forms, one can develop a system of signs that cross barriers of language and culture. A morphology, a collection of possibilities, derived from such archetypal forms, could provide designers with a foundation for the development and use of symbol signs and sign systems.

Perioperative Nurses' Attitudes Toward Computers, Marie A. Bashaw Jan 1997

Perioperative Nurses' Attitudes Toward Computers, Marie A. Bashaw

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Computer technology continues to expand and grow in health care today. Computers have become an every day part of health care throughout the hospital environment. Computer technology has been a part of the monitoring system in the operating room; now computer technology is on the verge of entering the operating room for patient charting, impacting the perioperative nurses' daily routine. Determining perioperative nurses' attitudes toward computerization is important in minimizing stress and difficulty of implementing intraoperative computerization. Through understanding demographics associated with these attitudes, a smooth transition can be accomplished to perioperative computerization. Identification of demographics that increase perioperative nurse …

Characterization Of Variable Molecular Weight And Alternative Solvent Poly(Methylmethacrylate) Resist Systems For Electron Beam Lithography, Todd Eakin Jan 1997

Characterization Of Variable Molecular Weight And Alternative Solvent Poly(Methylmethacrylate) Resist Systems For Electron Beam Lithography, Todd Eakin

Theses

Poly(methylmethacrylate), PMMA, resist samples with varying weight average molecular weights and several non-chlorobenzene casting solvents were characterized utilizing. electron beam lithography. Environmental concerns with chlorobenzene have motivated investigation into alternative casting solvents for PMMA resists. Processing effects of variation in the molecular weight of the PMMA resin were unknown and have been quantified. Weight average molecular weights ranging from 539,000 g/mol to 614,000 g/mol were studied in chlorobenzene resist systems. Chlorobenzene, anisole, butyl-acetate, and propylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate solvents were studied in resist systems of constant weight average molecular weight. A three stage screening, optimization, and confirmation experiment was …

Who Is Black Enough For You? An Analysis Of Northwestern University Law School's Struggle Over Minority Faculty Hiring, Leonard M. Baynes Jan 1997

Who Is Black Enough For You? An Analysis Of Northwestern University Law School's Struggle Over Minority Faculty Hiring, Leonard M. Baynes

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article considers the factors that should be used in hiring a person of color to a faculty position and raises the following questions: Apart from potential teaching ability and scholarly productivity, should faculty appointments committees look to other criteria for candidates of color? Provided that we can still consider the race and ethnicity of prospective candidates of color at private institutions, should faculty appointments committees be concerned about how closely identified a candidate is to an essentialized conception, for instance, of Black persons? Should a faculty hiring committee focus its efforts to hire African Americans on a Black person …

South Africa's Amnesty Process: A Viable Route Toward Truth And Reconciliation, Emily H. Mccarthy Jan 1997

South Africa's Amnesty Process: A Viable Route Toward Truth And Reconciliation, Emily H. Mccarthy

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

The road to democracy for South Africa was based on compromise. One of the most significant compromises made by the negotiators was the acceptance of an amnesty process culminating in the passage of the Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act of 1995. The Act grants full indemnity from criminal and civil prosecution to anyone affiliated with a political organization who committed an "act associated with a political objective" and who fully discloses all relevant facts. The purpose of the Act is twofold: to establish the "truth" about the apartheid past and to promote "reconciliation" among South Africans. Unfortunately, such …
