Elements Of A First Grade Writing Program, Julie Laree Fry Jan 1997

Elements Of A First Grade Writing Program, Julie Laree Fry

All Graduate Projects

Literature regarding the early developmental processes of (1) writing, (2) spelling, and (3) phonemic awareness for children between the ages of five and seven were reviewed. The literature stated that all three of these processes develop simultaneously through a series of very specific stages. Writing in kindergarten and first grade needs to be practiced daily and treated like a free activity without restriction of copious spelling rules. It was further regarded that spelling should be considered a life long evolving skill that should not stifle the early writer. A program to guide teachers as they help first grade children to …

Community Versus Assimilation: A Study In American Assimilation At Saint Joseph's Indian Industrial School, Sarah Shillinger Jan 1997

Community Versus Assimilation: A Study In American Assimilation At Saint Joseph's Indian Industrial School, Sarah Shillinger

Ethnic Studies Review

No govemment policy has had more of an impact on American Indians than the boarding school movement of the early to mid-twentieth century. This movement isolated American Indian children from their homes and communities and attempted to assimilate them into European-American society. This article studies the effects of this policy on children at the Saint Joseph's Indian Industrial School in Wisconsin. It uses oral history to recapture the voices and experiences of teachers and students. The use of oral history allows a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, social and academic atmosphere of the school.

Romanticizing Leadership: A Historical And Cultural Critique, Elisa Maureen Sandra Carlson Edd Jan 1997

Romanticizing Leadership: A Historical And Cultural Critique, Elisa Maureen Sandra Carlson Edd

Dissertations

Romanticism, a cultural and intellectual ideology of the late 18th and early 19th century, left a historical legacy of ecstasy and disaster upon subsequent generations. Manifestations of neo-romanticism are evident in many areas of contemporary culture. These modern manifestations, which include an infusion of the spiritual into everyday life, pantheistic adoration of nature, glorification of the self, fascination with the irrational, focus on the power of the imagination, subjugation of the individual to the common good, and apocalyptic hope for a new world, are influencing, theories and practices of leadership. This research set out to find out whether leadership studies …

Testability Properties Of Divergent Trees, Ronald D. Blanton, John P. Hayes Jan 1997

Testability Properties Of Divergent Trees, Ronald D. Blanton, John P. Hayes

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The testability of a class of regular circuits called divergent trees is investigated under a functional fault model. Divergent trees include such practical circuits as decoders and demultiplexers. We prove that uncontrolled divergent trees are testable with a fixed number of test patterns (C-testable) if and only if the module function is surjective. Testable controlled trees are also surjective but require sensitizing vectors for error propagation. We derive the conditions for testing controlled divergent trees with a test set whose size is proportional to the number of levels p found in the tree (L-testability). By viewing a tree as overlapping …

Gas Mass Fractions And The Evolution Of Spiral Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Jan 1997

Gas Mass Fractions And The Evolution Of Spiral Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

We show that the gas mass fraction of spiral galaxies is strongly correlated with luminosity and surface brightness. It is not correlated with linear size. Gas fraction varies with luminosity and surface brightness at the same rate, indicating evolution at fixed size. Dim galaxies are clearly less evolved than bright ones, having consumed only ∼1/2 of their gas. This resolves the gas consumption paradox, since there exist many galaxies with large gas reservoirs. These gas-rich galaxies must have formed the bulk of their stellar populations in the last half of a Hubble time. The existence of such immature galaxies at …

Particle Mixing By The Polychaete Capitella Species 1: Coupling Fate And Effect Of A Particle-Bound Organic Contaminant (Fluoranthene) In A Marine Sediment, Susanne D. Madsen, Thomas L. Forbes, Valery E. Forbes Jan 1997

Particle Mixing By The Polychaete Capitella Species 1: Coupling Fate And Effect Of A Particle-Bound Organic Contaminant (Fluoranthene) In A Marine Sediment, Susanne D. Madsen, Thomas L. Forbes, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

Particle mixing by the polychaete Capitella sp. 1 was investigated in a 22 d microcosm experiment in the presence and absence of the sediment-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fluoranthene. Mixing by Capitella sp. 1 (30000 ind. m–2) was examined using glass bead tracers (diam. = 30 to 100 μm) with and without a pulse introduction of fluoranthene to the sediment surface. Worms had a profound effect on the sediment appearance and reworked sediment in a conveyor-belt fashion. The predominant mode of mixing was bioadvective, and the worms created a subsurface maximum in the glass bead tracer profiles. Glass …

Open Access Dissertations

HIV-risk was assessed, and staged by the Transtheoretical Model, among 239 adolescents, ages 13-19 (mean age 15), with a 163-item self-administered questionnaire, supplemented with qualitative data from 28 focus groups. Thirteen psychometrically reliable scales were isolated and validated with 457 youth pooled from previous samples: factual, transmission, and perceived AIDS knowledge, misconceptions, perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, homophobia, substance use and abuse, communication assertiveness, condom use assertiveness, and risk histories for self and partner(s). AIDS risk was defined by frequency of unprotected occasions and number of intercourse partners. Sexual activity was indicated by 54 percent of the sample. Young men reported significantly …
