Semantic Analysis Of The Postscript Page Description Language, Ben Knuth Jan 1997

Semantic Analysis Of The Postscript Page Description Language, Ben Knuth

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The Postscript page description language is a functional programming language. Central to the effective use of the language are the functional properties of delayed evaluation and referential transparency. Postscript performs all of its operations via distinct, multiple stacks which stores function binding lists, function parameters, and function code. By way of these stacks, Postscript creates dynamic computational states which leads identical expressions to evaluate to different results. This hints towards the polymorphic quality of an object-oriented language, even though it contradicts the functional precept of manifest interfaces thereby introducing a nonorthogonality. One other streak of object-orientation that shows up in …

Object-Oriented Development In Creating Software Systems, Brooke Frost Jan 1997

Object-Oriented Development In Creating Software Systems, Brooke Frost

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Object-oriented development has become quite popular and well-known throughout the computer industry. There are three components that are a part of object-oriented development. One component is object-oriented analysis which involves the creation of an object-oriented model based on the application domain of the software system. The second component is object-oriented design which is when the programmers develop an object-oriented model based on the defined requirements for the software system. The last component is object-oriented programming which is the process of implementing the software system so it becomes a reality. Together these three components provide programmers with a beneficial tool in …

Genetic Algorithms: A Visual Search, Paul W. Jones Jan 1997

Genetic Algorithms: A Visual Search, Paul W. Jones

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Genetic algorithms apply the biological principles of selection, mutation, and crossover to a population set containing individuals representing target solutions to a given problem. Using these principles genetic algorithms attempt to create a migration of the individuals in subsequent generations toward the optimal solution.

This project is an attempt to visually represent the progress of a genetic algorithm. The coordinate fitness program attempts to find the maximum or minimum value of a given function. It visually represents the progress of the algorithm by providing a plot of each individual in each generation in time. It is then possible to view …

Where The Guesswork Ends And The Accrual Begins: Environmental Remediation Liabilities And Their Effects On The Managerial Decision-Making Process, Corie Sue Dumdie Jan 1997

Where The Guesswork Ends And The Accrual Begins: Environmental Remediation Liabilities And Their Effects On The Managerial Decision-Making Process, Corie Sue Dumdie

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Environmental remediation is not new, but accounting for the costs of such a process is. In 1996, the first authoritative literature on accounting for the costs of cleaning up environmental degradation were established, and they gave insight into the accounting treatment for environmental remediation liabilities (ERLs). The aim of the thesis is to explain the new accrual methods for ERLs and show their importance as they have influenced many managerial philosophies. The thesis also examines some of the weaknesses of ERLs and illustrates possible changes for the future. The most important aspect of ERLs is that they have helped management …

A Comparison Of The Kinetics Of Fatty-Acid Metabolism In Smokers And Nonsmokers, Patricia A. Valusek Jan 1997

A Comparison Of The Kinetics Of Fatty-Acid Metabolism In Smokers And Nonsmokers, Patricia A. Valusek

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

For many years, the United States government has required labels on all cigarette packages warning against the many ill effects associated with smoking. One of the major factors contributing to the unhealthy aspects of smoking is its profound impact on nutrient levels within the body. Free radicals found in both the gas and tar phases of cigarette smoke may pose a significant threat to the fatty-acid levels in the body. One method of assessing this threat is to examine the fatty-acid synthesis rates of smokers and nonsmokers. An assumption was made that a destruction of fatty-acids will be displayed as …

Comparative Analysis Of Pesticide Extraction Methods, Julie A. Lapos Jan 1997

Comparative Analysis Of Pesticide Extraction Methods, Julie A. Lapos

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Liquid-Liquid Extraction using methylene chloride, Liquid-Liquid extraction using a 75:25 mexanes: ethyl acetate solvent, and Solid Phase Extraction using C-18 disks were compared. Aliquots of water spiked with alachlor, atrazine, and trifluralin were extracted using each of the techniques. The extracts were concentrated and analyzed using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer with Selected Ion Monitoring. A surrogate, 2-nitro-m-xlene, and an internal standard, phenanthrene-d10,, were used. At spiking levels of 5-60 ug/L, there was not a significant statistical difference between the three methods when the liquid extractors were run for 24 hours. There was however a difference between the solid phase extraction and …

Simulation Of Living Processes Utilizing Concurrency And Object-Oriented Programming, Aaron Ziegler Jan 1997

Simulation Of Living Processes Utilizing Concurrency And Object-Oriented Programming, Aaron Ziegler

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

What does it mean to be alive? Is it possible to create artificial life-forms that are truly alive? Can a computer program be alive? To answer these questions, I first explore the history of artificial life, beginning with John von Neumann, who designed algorithms possessing lifelike capabilities, and moving on to other famous attempts, such as Horton Conway's 'Game of Life', and Thomas Ray's remarkable 'Tierra' project.

Also included is a discussion on the merits of Object-Oriented programming for simulating, and ultimately synthesizing life on a computer. concurrency is defined, and its value for stimulating and synthesizing life is made …

Two-Phase Flow In Microchannels, Roger Scott Stanley Jan 1997

Two-Phase Flow In Microchannels, Roger Scott Stanley

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate fluid mechanic and heat transfer characteristics of two-phase two-component flow in rectangular microchannels. Experiments were conducted using rectangular aluminum channels with hydraulic diameters ranging between 56 $\mu$m and 256 $\mu$m and aspect ratios which varied from 0.5 to 1.5. Both single- and two-phase tests were conducted using water and gaseous argon, helium, and nitrogen as the working fluids. The Reynolds number for both types of experiments ranged from approximately 50 to nearly 10,000. The Nusselt number ranged between 0.0002 and 70. The single- and two-phase experimental data were empirically correlated, using parameters …

Back-Calculated Length-At-Age Estimates From Two Scale Radii, Keith L. Hurley, Kevin L. Pope, David W. Willis Jan 1997

Back-Calculated Length-At-Age Estimates From Two Scale Radii, Keith L. Hurley, Kevin L. Pope, David W. Willis

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Variability in length-at-age estimates back-calculated from scales continues to be of concern to fishery scientists. Measurement transects used to back-calculate length at age have been recommended; however, specific scale and annuli radius measurements have not been evaluated for variability between different radii. Thus, the purpose of our study was to compare back-calculated length-at-age estimates determined from two different scale radii: one horizontally from the focus to the anterior-median edge and one diagonally from the focus to the anterior-lateral corner of the scale. No significant differences (P = 0.13 - 0.58 and P = 0.24 - 0.87) in backcalculated length-at-age estimates …

A New Birth-Interval Approach To Estimating Demographic Parameters Of Humpback Whales, Jay Barlow, Phillip Clapham Jan 1997

A New Birth-Interval Approach To Estimating Demographic Parameters Of Humpback Whales, Jay Barlow, Phillip Clapham

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A demographic model is developed based on interbirth intervals and is applied to estimate the population growth rate of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Gulf of Maine. Fecundity rates in this model are based on the probabilities of giving birth at time t after a previous birth and on the probabilities of giving birth first at age x. Maximum likelihood methods are used to estimate these probabilities using sighting data collected for individually identified whales. Female survival rates are estimated from these same sighting data using a modified Jolly–Seber method. The youngest age at first parturition is …

Wavelet Analysis Of Commodity Price Behavior, Russell Davidson, Walter C. Labys, Jean-Baptiste Lesourd Jan 1997

Wavelet Analysis Of Commodity Price Behavior, Russell Davidson, Walter C. Labys, Jean-Baptiste Lesourd

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

We propose a form of semi-nonparametric regression based on wavelet analysis. Traditional time series methods usually involve either the time or the frequency domain, but wavelets can combine the information from both of these. While wavelet transforms are typically restricted to equally spaced observations an integer power of 2 in number, we show how to go beyond these constraints. We use our methods to construct ‘patios’ for 21 important international commodity price series. These graph the magnitude of the variations in the series at different time scales for various subperiods of the full sample.

Rodent Exclusion Techniques, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo Jan 1997

Rodent Exclusion Techniques, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Rodents have been a common problem in living and working environments, probably, ever since humans began living in permanent dwellings. Even today many people believe rodent infestations are "inevitable". However, the recent appearance of Hantavirus (Sin Nombre Virus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, HPS) in the Western states has re-awakened the public to the serious health problems posed by rodents and has prompted new inquiries into more effective ways to manage infestations. This manual is designed as a training reference for making rodent control in buildings an attainable goal.

An Embedded Ring Approach To The Vibrational Dynamics Of Amorphous Materials, John R. Dennison, T. E. Doyle Jan 1997

An Embedded Ring Approach To The Vibrational Dynamics Of Amorphous Materials, John R. Dennison, T. E. Doyle

All Physics Faculty Publications

A theoretical approach has been developed to model the vibrational modes of amorphous, two-dimensional materials. The method considers that the vibrational density of states is composed primarily of states originating from embedded ring structures of medium-range order. The materials are modeled as continuous random networks comprised of a statistical distribution of symmetric, planar rings with four to eight members. The rings are treated as local structural units embedded in the material, similar to molecules within a solid. The ring potentials are approximated with a valence force model (bond-stretching and bond-angle-bending force constants) modified by a third harmonic, effective force constant …

An Efficient K-Means Clustering Algorithm, Khaled Alsabti, Sanjay Ranka, Vineet Singh Jan 1997

An Efficient K-Means Clustering Algorithm, Khaled Alsabti, Sanjay Ranka, Vineet Singh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this paper, we present a novel algorithm for performing k-means clustering. It organizes all the patterns in a k-d tree structure such that one can find all the patterns which are closest to a given prototype efficiently. The main intuition behind our approach is as follows. All the prototypes are potential candidates for the closest prototype at the root level. However, for the children of the root node, we may be able to prune the candidate set by using simple geometrical constraints. This approach can be applied recursively until the size of the candidate set is one for each …

D'Agostino, Peter W. F. Wilson, Albert J. Belanger, Daniel H. O'Leary, Philip A. Wolf, David Rush, Ernst J. Schaefer, Irwin H. Rosenberg

United States Public Health Resources

Recent epidemiologic studies suggest that elevated homocysteine concentrations in plasma represent a risk factor for vascular disease and stroke. In the present study, we analyzed plasma samples from the 20th biannual examination of the Framingham Heart Study cohort to determine distribution of plasma homocysteine concentrations, with emphasis on relationships to vitamins that are involved in homocysteine metabolism and prevalence of carotid artery stenosis. Results showed that homocysteine was positively correlated with age. After controlling for age and sex, homocysteine exhibited strong inverse correlation with plasma folate, and weaker correlations with plasma vitamin B12 and pyridoxal- 5' -phosphate. Homocysteine was …

The Nordstrom–Robinson Code Is Algebraic-Geometric, Judy L. Walker Jan 1997

The Nordstrom–Robinson Code Is Algebraic-Geometric, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The techniques of algebraic geometry have been widely and successfully applied to the study of linear codes over finite field since the early 1980’s. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the study of linear codes over finite rings. In a previous paper [10], we combined these two approaches to coding theory by introducing and studying algebraic-geometric codes over rings. In this correspondence, we show that the Nordstrom–Robinson code is the image under the Gray mapping of an algebraic geometric code over Z = 4Z.

The Problematics Of Moral And Legal Theory, Richard A. Posner Jan 1997

The Problematics Of Moral And Legal Theory, Richard A. Posner

Articles

In these Holmes Lectures, delivered a century after the publication of Oliver Wendell Holmes's great essay The Path of the Law, Judge Posner argues for an essentially Holmesian conception of the proper relations among modern normative moral philosophy ("academic moralism"), morality, and law. Academic moralism, he argues, lacks either the intellectual cogency or the emotional power to change people's beliefs or behavior; the power to do so resides in "moral entrepreneurs," which academic moralists emphatically are not. Academic moralism's lack of cogency disqualifies it to guide judicial decisionmaking even - in fact, especially - in cases involving controversial moral issues, …
