Limiting Spheroid Size As A Function Of Growth Factor Source Location, J. A. Adam, K. Y. Ward Jan 1997

Limiting Spheroid Size As A Function Of Growth Factor Source Location, J. A. Adam, K. Y. Ward

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Solutions C(r) of the time-independent nonhomogeneous diffusion equation for three different piecewise-uniform source terms are used to examine the limiting size of multicell spheroids using a simple model which reproduces concentration-dependent mitotic behavior. A condition is derived under which nontrivial solutions do not exist (in all three cases), and a condition for the existence of a unique nontrivial solution is established for the case of growth-modifying factor (GMF) production throughout the spheroid. Qualitative behavior of the limiting size is established as a function of various physiological parameters. Of fundamental importance is the assumed GMF concentration threshold θ, …

Antiplane Shear Of A Strip Containing A Staggered Array Of Rigid Line Inclusions, G. Kerr, G. Melrose, J. Tweed Jan 1997

Antiplane Shear Of A Strip Containing A Staggered Array Of Rigid Line Inclusions, G. Kerr, G. Melrose, J. Tweed

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Motivated by the increased use of fibre-reinforced materials, we illustrate how the effective elastic modulus of an isotropic and homogeneous material can be increased by the insertion of rigid inclusions. Specifically we consider the two-dimensional antiplane shear problem for a strip of material. The strip is reinforced by introducing two sets of ribbon-like, rigid inclusions perpendicular to the faces of the strip. The strip is then subjected to a prescribed uniform displacement difference between its faces, see Figure 1. it should be noted that the problem posed is equivalent to that of the uniform antiplane shear problem for an infinite …

A Parametric Study Of Knock Control Strategies For A Bi-Fuel Engine., William Scott Wayne Jan 1997

A Parametric Study Of Knock Control Strategies For A Bi-Fuel Engine., William Scott Wayne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A numerical thermodynamic model was developed and employed to investigate the use of elevated compression ratios, variable valve timing, and ignition timing modulation as a means of controlling knock and improving the performance of a bi-fuel engine. The proposed strategy employed an increased compression ratio to boost power and torque when operating on natural gas. An increased intake duration and retarded ignition timing were then employed to control knock during gasoline operation. Dynamometer testing was performed on a 1.9 liter Saturn{dollar}\\sp\\circler{dollar} engine to provide empirical data for model calibration and to evaluate the effects of proposed changes on engine emissions. …

Robust Design Optimization With Applications To Composite-Material Structures., Satheesh Makkapati Jan 1997

Robust Design Optimization With Applications To Composite-Material Structures., Satheesh Makkapati

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The problem of robust design and optimization for designs with varying operating conditions is considered in this work. A robust design optimization tool (RDOT) has been developed in this work. The tool is constructed with building blocks: an Artificial Neural Network, a Response Evaluator (e.g., FEA, etc.), an Optimizer based on Quadratic Programming, Cooperative Game Theory, Design of Experiments, and Taguchi Methods. The tool is fully codified into a computer program, and it demands very little designer insight into the problem under consideration. Design optimization is necessary to efficiently accomplish a design that, while satisfying the desired functionality, also uses …

Comparison Of A Pin Cam And An Inverted Pin Cam Design Based On The Parameters Used For The Axial Vane Rotary Engine (Beta Version)., Phillip Howard Burnside

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The comparison of two design variations of the Axial Vane Rotary Engine (AVRE) was done by evaluating several parameters. These two designs are called the Pin Cam and the Inverted Pin Cam designs. The first step involved developing a technique to determine the heat loads on the components of the engines since the engine is running at a steady state loading condition. The second step used this thermal data to get a final temperature profile. The third step combined the thermal data and the combustion data to perform a structural analysis of the engine components. This illustrated both the stresses …

Faculty Stance Toward Multiculturalism And Multicultural Education: A Qualitative Study., Jane Sheridan Cardi Jan 1997

Faculty Stance Toward Multiculturalism And Multicultural Education: A Qualitative Study., Jane Sheridan Cardi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studies indicate that the implementation of multiculturalism into university general education course requirements such as introductory American literature is sporadic. Furthermore, although research suggests that faculty are more frequently including multicultural literature in their courses, there is little research concerning what faculty believe about multiculturalism and multicultural education and how faculty actually teach multiculturalism in higher education. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of why faculty do or do not implement multiculturalism into their curricula and if they do, how they implement it. This study uses phenomenological and hermeneutic research methods to explore the stances, …

The Relationship Between Brain Hemispheric Characteristics And Leadership Style Of School Superintendents In West Virginia., Theodora Sinicrope Farmer Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Brain Hemispheric Characteristics And Leadership Style Of School Superintendents In West Virginia., Theodora Sinicrope Farmer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was designed to examine the relationship between the self-perceived preferred brain hemispheric processing of West Virginia public school superintendents and their self-perceived leadership styles. Respondents completed the Hermann Brain Dominance Profile, the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, and a demographic sheet. Data were analyzed using the General Linear Model of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). Two hypotheses guided the study. West Virginia public school superintendents who perceive themselves as preferring predominantly left hemispheric processing will have significantly higher Initiating Structure scores than superintendents who perceive themselves as predominantly right hemispheric. West Virginia public school superintendents who perceive themselves as …

An Experimental And Numerical Study Of Residence Time And Mixing Characteristics Of A Full Flow Dilution Tunnel., Sunil Katragadda Jan 1997

An Experimental And Numerical Study Of Residence Time And Mixing Characteristics Of A Full Flow Dilution Tunnel., Sunil Katragadda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A stimulus-response technique was applied to a co-current flow with mixing orifice type full-flow dilution tunnel to determine its fluid residence time distribution and mixing characteristics. The technique involved the injection of a tracer at the inlet and the observation of the corresponding response at the sampling zone of the tunnel. Both propane gas and corn oil aerosol of approximately 0.5 {dollar}\\mu{dollar}m in diameter were used as the non-reacting tracers for the newly developed gas injection detection system (GIDS) and aerosol injection detection system (AIDS). Data were gathered from the tunnel operated under steady-state conditions and at three different volumetric …

Edith Wharton's "Secret Sensitiveness" The Decoration Of Houses, And Her Fiction, Suzanne W. Jones Jan 1997

Edith Wharton's "Secret Sensitiveness" The Decoration Of Houses, And Her Fiction, Suzanne W. Jones

English Faculty Publications

Surely one of the reasons that Edith Wharton lived most of her life in France was that she greatly admired the way the French "instinctively applies to living the same rules that they applies to artistic creation." Wharton believed that the French had an eye for beauty, or what she called "the seeing eye," in contrast to Americans whose sight had been dimmed by the puritanism of their Anglo-Saxon heritage. However, in her last and unfinished novel, The Buccaneers (1938), Wharton suggests through her American protagonist's relationship with her European governess, Laura Testvalley, that the art of seeing can be …

The Theory Of The Firm And The Theory Of The International Economic Organization: Toward Comparative Institutional Analysis, Joel P. Trachtman Jan 1997

The Theory Of The Firm And The Theory Of The International Economic Organization: Toward Comparative Institutional Analysis, Joel P. Trachtman

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Debates regarding the competences and governance of interna- tional economic organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the European Union (EU) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFFA) seem to grow more polarized. Academic lawyers, political scientists and economists seem to add little light to these heated debates. The purpose of this paper is to examine the theory of the firm and related transaction cost-based literatures of new institutional economics (NIE),4 law and economics (L&E) and industrial organizations (IO),' and the application of their analytical techniques to the linked problems of competence and governance of international economic organizations …

Science And International Regulatory Convergence, Jeffery Atik Jan 1997

Science And International Regulatory Convergence, Jeffery Atik

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

National regulation is frequently premised on scientific assump- tions; much of regulatory design is based on scientific findings. Con- sumer product, food and drug and workplace safety standards all depend on a scientific assessment of the risks faced by the public and of the efficacy of an adopted measure in addressing these risks. Build- ing codes, waste disposal protocols and mandated immunization of school children all proceed from the technical recommendations of the scientific community. In current Western society, a regulatory measure lacking a scien- tific basis will be subject to criticism and perhaps ridicule; it may be struck down …

The Role Of Consensus In Gatt/Wto Decision-Making, Mary E. Footer Jan 1997

The Role Of Consensus In Gatt/Wto Decision-Making, Mary E. Footer

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The most striking aspect of the new World Trade Organization (WTO)' is the extent to which it preserves and consolidates the body of law and practice which has evolved out of the development of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)2 and related instru- ments. Such preservation and consolidation is deliberate as the pre- amble to the Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization (Marrakesh Agreement) makes clear.3 The mechanism chosen for the transition from the GAT-T to the WTO was designed to provide a degree of continuity, stability and thereby predictability in the multilateral trading system. Its occurrence …

Credit Rating State Electricity Board, V Ranganathan, Manoj S Naik Jan 1997

Credit Rating State Electricity Board, V Ranganathan, Manoj S Naik

IIMB Management Review

With state electricity boards (SEBs) emerging as leading buyers from independent power producers (IPPs), their credit quality assessment is an important concern for both IPPs and lenders. The electricity boards of Kerala, Karnataka, Ut tar Pradesh, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh have been assessed on two critical dimensions, namely business and financial risks and the moot question as to whether business can be done with SEBs has been raised.

Semiclassical Effects In Black Hole Interiors, William A. Hiscock, Shane L. Larson, Paul R. Anderson Jan 1997

Semiclassical Effects In Black Hole Interiors, William A. Hiscock, Shane L. Larson, Paul R. Anderson

All Physics Faculty Publications

First-order semiclassical perturbations to the Schwarzschild black hole geometry are studied within the black hole interior. The source of the perturbations is taken to be the vacuum stress-energy of quantized scalar, spinor, and vector fields, evaluated using analytic approximations developed by Page and others (for massless fields) and the DeWitt-Schwinger approximation (for massive fields). Viewing the interior as an anisotropic collapsing cosmology, we find that minimally or conformally coupled scalar fields, and spinor fields, decrease the anisotropy as the singularity is approached, while vector fields increase the anisotropy. In addition, we find that for massless fields of all spins, the …

The Global Ionosphere-Polar Wind System During Changing Magnetic Activity, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka Jan 1997

The Global Ionosphere-Polar Wind System During Changing Magnetic Activity, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka

All Physics Faculty Publications

A time-dependent, three-dimensional, multi-ion model of the global ionosphere-polar wind system was used to study the system's response to an idealized geomagnetic storm for different seasonal and solar cycle conditions. The model covered the altitude range from 90 to 9000 km for latitudes greater than 50° magnetic in the northern hemisphere. The geomagnetic storm contained a 1-hour growth phase, a 1-hour main phase, and a 4-hour decay phase. Four storm simulations were conducted, corresponding to winter and summer solstices at both solar maximum and minimum. The simulations indicated the following: (1) O+ upflows typically occur in the cusp and …

Driving A Physical Ionospheric Model With A Magnetospheric Mhd Model, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, M. D. Bowline, J. Chen, S. Slinker, J. Fedder

All Physics Faculty Publications

This is the first study in which a physical ionospheric model (time-dependent ionospheric model (TDIM)) has been driven through a substorm using self-consistent magnetospheric convection electric field and auroral electron precipitation inputs. Both of these were generated from a simulation of a real substorm event using the MHD model [Fedder et al., 1995b]. Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) data were available for 1.5 hours until the substorm breakup. Hence the substorm growth and expansion dynamics is captured in a 1.5-hour time period. As a reference against which to compare this TDIM substorm simulation, a typical climatological TDIM simulation was …

Floristic Investigation Of Crooked Creek Community Of Juan Solomon Park, Indianapolis Indiana, Raelene M. Crandall, Rebecca W. Dolan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The protection of plant resources in urban areas is a growing conservation concern. Inventory activities that document species presence and stewardship plans that protect and enhance these areas are needed. The results of a botanical inventory of the Crooked Creek Community Juan Solomon Park in Indianapolis, Indiana, are reported in this paper. The 46-acre park contains three distinct habitats, supporting a wide variety of plants. One hundred seventy-nine vascular plant species from 64 families were identified, including 53 (29.6%) non-native species that are naturalizing within the park. Despite its high percentage of alien species and urban setting, the park is …

Galactic Black Hole Binaries: High-Energy Radiation, J E. Grove, J E. Grindlay, B A. Harmon, X M. Hua, D Kazanas, Mark L. Mcconnell

Space Science Center

Observations of galactic black hole candidates made by the instruments aboard the Compton GRO in the hard X-ray and γ-ray bands have significantly enhanced our knowledge of the phenomenology of the emission from these objects. Understanding these observations presents a formidable challenge to theoretical models of the accretion flow onto the compact object and of the physical mechanisms that generate high-energy radiation. Here we summarize the current state of observations and theoretical interpretation of the emission from black holecandidates above 20 keV. The all-sky monitoring capability of BATSE allows, for the first time, nearly continuous studies of the high-energy emission …

A Search For Gamma-Ray Flares From Black-Hole Candidates On Time Scales Of ∼1.5 Hours, R Vandijk, K Bennett, H Bloemen, R Diehl, W Hermsen, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder Jan 1997

A Search For Gamma-Ray Flares From Black-Hole Candidates On Time Scales Of ∼1.5 Hours, R Vandijk, K Bennett, H Bloemen, R Diehl, W Hermsen, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder

Space Science Center

Strong short-lived flares from black-hole candidates have been detected in the hard X-rayregime and possibly also at γ-ray energies. Here we present a search for short-lived flares in the 0.75–30 MeV COMPTEL data. No flares are found during the 5 viewing periods considered, with typical upper limits of a few times the Crab flux.

Reassessment Of The 56co Emission From Sn 1991t, D Morris, K Bennett, H Bloemen, R Diehl, W Hermsen, G G. Lichti, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder Jan 1997

Reassessment Of The 56co Emission From Sn 1991t, D Morris, K Bennett, H Bloemen, R Diehl, W Hermsen, G G. Lichti, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder

Space Science Center

The detection of 56Co emission from SN 1991T has been previously reported at a level near the COMPTEL sensitivity threshold. The spectral analysis method, fitting the count spectrum to a background model plus a 56Co emission template, is subject to possible systematic effects which had not been thoroughly studied at that time. To better evaluate the significance of that ∼3.3σ detection, the same method has been applied to a grid of points with 5° spacing, out to 35° from the pointing direction, in each of 103 observing periods from phases 1 through 3. A dozen instances were found with a …

Space Science Center

Using the COMPTEL data of the first 5 years of the CGRO mission we have derived the average pulsed spectrum of the Crab Pulsar, as well as phase-resolved spectra of the pulsed emission of the Crab Pulsar. The spectra in the COMPTEL energy range (0.75 to 30 MeV) are compared to those in the neighboring energy bands. The pulsed flux has been examined for its stability. Pulsed lightcurves have been derived for different energy intervals. Preliminary results of this analysis are presented.

The Mev Spectrum Of Cygnus X-1 As Observed With Comptel, Mark L. Mcconnell, K Bennett, H Bloemen, W Collmar, W Hermsen, L Kuiper, R Much, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder, H Steinle, A W. Strong, R Vandijk Jan 1997

The Mev Spectrum Of Cygnus X-1 As Observed With Comptel, Mark L. Mcconnell, K Bennett, H Bloemen, W Collmar, W Hermsen, L Kuiper, R Much, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder, H Steinle, A W. Strong, R Vandijk

Space Science Center

The COMPTEL experiment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) has observed the Cygnus region on several occasions since launch. These data represent the most sensitive observations to date of Cygnus X-1 in the 0.75–30 MeV range. The spectrum shows significant evidence for emission extending out to several MeV. These data alone suggest a need to modify the thermal Comptonization models or to incorporate some type of non-thermal emission mechanism. Here we report on the results of an analysis of selected COMPTEL data collected during the first three years of the CGRO mission. These data are then compared with contemporaneous data …

The Total Cosmic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Spectrum From 9 To 30 Mev Measured With Comptel, S C. Kappadath, James M. Ryan, K Bennett, H Bloemen, R Diehl, W Hermsen, Mark L. Mcconnell, V Schonfelder, M Varendorff, G Weidenspointer, C Winkler Jan 1997

The Total Cosmic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Spectrum From 9 To 30 Mev Measured With Comptel, S C. Kappadath, James M. Ryan, K Bennett, H Bloemen, R Diehl, W Hermsen, Mark L. Mcconnell, V Schonfelder, M Varendorff, G Weidenspointer, C Winkler

Space Science Center

A preliminary COMPTEL Cosmic Diffuse Gamma-Ray (CDG) spectrum from 800 keV to 30 MeV was presented earlier at the 3rd Compton Symposium. The COMPTEL results represent the first significant detection of the CDG radiation in the 9 to 30 MeV range. Using high-latitude data from the first 5 years of the mission we have performed a new detailed measurement of the 9 to 30 MeV spectrum with finer energy binning. The new improved results are in good agreement with our previous estimates and are compatible with power-law extrapolations from higher energies. The measured 9–30 MeV spectra from the Virgo and …
