A Lagrangian Dispersion Model For Predicting Co2 Sources, Sinks, And Fluxes In A Uniform Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) Stand, Gabriel Katul, Ram Oren, David Ellsworth, Cheng-I Hsieh, Nathan Phillips, Keith Lewin Jan 1997

A Lagrangian Dispersion Model For Predicting Co2 Sources, Sinks, And Fluxes In A Uniform Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) Stand, Gabriel Katul, Ram Oren, David Ellsworth, Cheng-I Hsieh, Nathan Phillips, Keith Lewin

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A canopy Lagrangian turbulent scalar transport model for predicting scalar fluxes, sources, and sinks within a forested canopy was tested using CO2 concentration and flux measurements. The model formulation is based on the localized near-field theory (LNF) proposed by Raupach [1989a, b]. Using the measured mean CO2 concentration profile, the vertical velocity variance profile, and the Lagrangian integral timescale profile within and above a forested canopy, the proposed model predicted the CO2 flux and source (or sink) profiles. The model testing was carried out using eddy correlation measurements at 9 m in a uniform 13 m tall …

Behavioral Responses Of Bottlenose Dolphins To Remote Biopsy Sampling And Observations Of Surgical Biopsy Wound Healing, David W. Weller, Victor G. Cockcroft, Bernd Würsig, Spencer K. Lynn, Dagmar Fertl Jan 1997

Behavioral Responses Of Bottlenose Dolphins To Remote Biopsy Sampling And Observations Of Surgical Biopsy Wound Healing, David W. Weller, Victor G. Cockcroft, Bernd Würsig, Spencer K. Lynn, Dagmar Fertl

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Information on reactions of delphinids to biopsy sampling and healing of associated biopsy wounds is limited. Results presented here report on the behavioral responses of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) to remote biopsy sampling procedures, and provide information on stages of surgical biopsy wound repair. Biopsy samples of free-ranging dolphins were collected between February–May 1992 in Galveston Bay, Texas, using a sterilized corer-tipped bolt, launched from a crossbow. A total of 8 direct ‘hits’ were documented, 4 hits (50%) in which a tissue sample was obtained, 2 hits (25%) from which no sample was retrieved, and 2 hits …

First Estimates Of Vaquita Abundance, Jay Barlow, Tim Gerrodette, Greg Silber Jan 1997

First Estimates Of Vaquita Abundance, Jay Barlow, Tim Gerrodette, Greg Silber

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The abundance of the only population of vaquitas, Gulf of California harbor porpoise (Phocoena sinus), is estimated from four surveys conducted in Mexico between 1986 and 1993, using a variety of methods. A line-transect approach was applied, using some parameters estimated from a related species, the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Vaquita abundance is estimated as 503 (CV = 0.63) from 1986-1988 boat surveys, 885 (CV = 0.50) from 1988-- 1989 aerial surveys, 572 (CV = 1.43) from a 1991 aerial survey, and 224 (CV = 0.39) from a 1993 ship survey. A weighted log-linear regression in …

Distribution And Abundance Of The Amazon River Dolphin (Inia Geoffrensis) And The Tucuxi (Sotalia Fluviatilis) In The Upper Amazon River, Omar Vidal, Jay Barlow, Luis A. Hurtado, Instituto Tecnológico Y De Estudios Superiores De Monterrey (Itesm), Patricia Cendón, Zully Ojeda

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A boat survey was conducted from 5 to 26 June 1993 to estimate the abundance of the Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) and the tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) along ca. 120 km of the Amazon River bordering Colombia, Peru, and Brazil. Two survey methods were used: line transects during 5 d and strip transects during 15 d. The line transects were used to estimate the abundance of both species in the main channels of the Amazon at distances greater than 200 m from river banks and islands, and strip transects were used to estimate abundance in the …

First Record Of Common Moorhen Nesting In South Dakota, William A. Meeks, Kenneth F. Higgins Jan 1997

First Record Of Common Moorhen Nesting In South Dakota, William A. Meeks, Kenneth F. Higgins

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is widespread in North America, but is not very abundant throughout its range (Greij 1994, Common Moorhen, Pages 145-157 in Tacha and Braun [eds.] Migratory Shore and Upland Game Bird Management in North America, Allen Press, Lawrence). In North Dakota its status is accidental (Konrad 1983, Prairie Nat. 15:144); in South Dakota it is considered a casual visitor and a probable breeding species (South Dakota Ornithologists' Union 1991, The Birds of South Dakota, Northern State University Press, Aberdeen; Peterson 1995, The Breeding Bird Atlas of South Dakota, Northern State University Press, Aberdeen).

A Land-Use And Water-Quality History Of White Rock Lake Reservoir, Dallas, Texas, Based On Paleolimnological Analyses, J. Platt Bradbury, Peter C. Van Metre Jan 1997

A Land-Use And Water-Quality History Of White Rock Lake Reservoir, Dallas, Texas, Based On Paleolimnological Analyses, J. Platt Bradbury, Peter C. Van Metre

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

White Rock Lake reservoir in Dallas, Texas contains a 150-cm sediment record of silty clay that documents land-use changes since its construction in 1912. Pollen analysis corroborates historical evidence that between 1912 and 1950 the watershed was primarily agricultural. Land disturbance by plowing coupled with strong and variable spring precipitation caused large amounts of sediment to enter the lake during this period. Diatoms were not preserved at this time probably because of low productivity compared to diatom dissolution by warm, alkaline water prior to burial in the sediments. After 1956, the watershed became progressively urbanized. Erosion decreased, land stabilized, and …

Two-Dimensional Seismic Image Of The San Andreas Fault In The Northern Gabilan Range, Central California Evidence For Fluids In The Fault Zone, C. Thurber, S. Roecker, W. Ellsworth, Y. Chen, W. Lutter, R. Sessions

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A joint inversion for two-dimensional P-wave velocity (Vp), P-to-S velocity ratio (Vp/Vs), and earthquake locations along the San Andreas fault (SAF) in central California reveals a complex relationship among seismicity, fault zone structure, and the surface fault trace. A zone of low Vp andh ighV p/Vs lies beneatht he SAF surfacetr ace( SAFST), extending to a depth of about 6 km. Most of the seismic
activity along the SAF occurs at depths of 3 to 7 km in a southwest-dippingz one that roughly intersectst he SAFST, and lies near the southweset dgeo f the low Vp and high Vp/Vs zones. …

Writing Science Through Critical Thinking, Marilyn F. Moriarty Jan 1997

Writing Science Through Critical Thinking, Marilyn F. Moriarty

Books by Hollins Faculty and Staff

Written and extensively class tested with NSF/NIH support, this timely and useful text addresses a crucial need which is acknowledged in most universities and colleges. It is the need for students to learn to write in the context of their field of study; in this case science. Although numerous "how to" writing books have been published, few, if any, address the central pedagogical issues underlying the process of learning to think and write scientifically. The direct connection between this writing skill and that of critical thinking is developed with engaging style by the author, an English professor. Moriarty's book is …

On Spurious Behavior Of Super-Stable Implicit Methods, Helen C. Yee, P. K. Sweby Jan 1997

On Spurious Behavior Of Super-Stable Implicit Methods, Helen C. Yee, P. K. Sweby

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Th e objective of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the asymptotic nonlinear behavior of super-stable implicit linear multistep methods for constant time steps. Examples of the nonlinear effect caused by grid adaptation and super-stable implicit total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes on the overall performance of the numerical procedure are given. A method to minimize spurious steady-state numerical solutions is discussed.

A System For Recognizing A Large Class Of Engineering Drawings, Yuhong Yu, Ashok Samal, Sharad C. Seth Jan 1997

A System For Recognizing A Large Class Of Engineering Drawings, Yuhong Yu, Ashok Samal, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

We present a system for recognizing a large class of engineering drawings characterized by alternating instances of symbols and connection lines. The class includes domains such as flowcharts, logic and electrical circuits, and chemical plant diagrams. The output of the system, a netlist identifying the symbol types and interconnections, may be used for design simulation or as a compact portable representation of the drawing. The automatic recognition task is divided into two stages: 1) Domain-independent rules are used to segment symbols from connection lines in the drawing image that has been thinned, vectorized, and preprocessed in routine ways. 2) A …

The Effects Of Network Latency On Multimedia Applications, James Beach Jan 1997

The Effects Of Network Latency On Multimedia Applications, James Beach

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Network latency slows the response time of networks such as the Internet. This is an ever increasing problem as applications migrate towards interactive multimedia. To make multimedia applications viable across the Internet, the underlying data delivery structures of the Internet need to be changed. new technologies in network connections and data delivery schemes need to be further researched and implemented. Two cooperating technologies which demonstrate potential in delivering Internet multimedia applications are RealAudio systems and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks. Reducing network latency will help in bringing smooth, real-time audio and video to networked computers.

Semantic Analysis Of The Postscript Page Description Language, Ben Knuth Jan 1997

Semantic Analysis Of The Postscript Page Description Language, Ben Knuth

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The Postscript page description language is a functional programming language. Central to the effective use of the language are the functional properties of delayed evaluation and referential transparency. Postscript performs all of its operations via distinct, multiple stacks which stores function binding lists, function parameters, and function code. By way of these stacks, Postscript creates dynamic computational states which leads identical expressions to evaluate to different results. This hints towards the polymorphic quality of an object-oriented language, even though it contradicts the functional precept of manifest interfaces thereby introducing a nonorthogonality. One other streak of object-orientation that shows up in …

Object-Oriented Development In Creating Software Systems, Brooke Frost Jan 1997

Object-Oriented Development In Creating Software Systems, Brooke Frost

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Object-oriented development has become quite popular and well-known throughout the computer industry. There are three components that are a part of object-oriented development. One component is object-oriented analysis which involves the creation of an object-oriented model based on the application domain of the software system. The second component is object-oriented design which is when the programmers develop an object-oriented model based on the defined requirements for the software system. The last component is object-oriented programming which is the process of implementing the software system so it becomes a reality. Together these three components provide programmers with a beneficial tool in …
