The West German Smorgasbord Approach To Intellectual Property Protection Of Computer Software, 15 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 883 (1997), Larry N. Woodard Jan 1997

The West German Smorgasbord Approach To Intellectual Property Protection Of Computer Software, 15 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 883 (1997), Larry N. Woodard

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

There is a lack of efficient protection for intellectual property within the computer software medium. Intellectual property of computer software has traditionally been protected by copyrights and relatively recently has been afforded protection of its intellectual property via patents. The distinction between a computer's hardware and a computer's software is decreasing; likewise, the distinction for such protection, namely patents and copyrights, respectively, should be decreased or eliminated, as well. After a brief comparative analysis of patent and copyright protection for computer software, an alternative to the current system of protection for software intellectual property exists. The nature of the software …

Cryptography And Liberty: An International Survey Of Encryption Policy, 16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 475 (1998), Wayne Madsen, David L. Sobel, Marc Rotenberg, David Banisar

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The speedy progress of the "digital revolution" has significantly changed the manner in which individuals and other entities communicate and exchange information. Since traditional paper based media for communication is being replaced by high tech means, new security measures such as cryptographic security techniques are sought to ensure individual privacy. This is a drastic change because encryption technology was traditionally utilized by military and diplomatic communications. Human rights activists, political dissidents and journalists employ encryption technology to protect communication from government surveillance. The Global Internet Liberty Campaign ("GILC") was organized to protect civil liberties and human rights in the on-line …

On-Site Fingerprinting In The Banking Industry: Inconvenience Or Invasion Of Privacy, 16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 597 (1998), Patrick J. Waltz Jan 1997

On-Site Fingerprinting In The Banking Industry: Inconvenience Or Invasion Of Privacy, 16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 597 (1998), Patrick J. Waltz

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

In order to prevent check fraud, many banking institutions are implementing programs of on-site fingerprinting. On-site fingerprinting is a process whereby individuals are subject to fingerprinting before being allowed to cash a check. Currently, two methods are used by the banking industry to obtain these fingerprints. The first method is the old fashioned way which the finger is inked and the ink mark is placed on the back of the check. Today, invisible ink is used. The second means by which these fingerprints are obtained is through biometrics or digital recording. The person attempting to cash a check places his …

A Generalized Coloring Of Graphs, Ashok Amin, Lane Clark, John P. Mcsorley, Hui Wang, Grant Zhang Jan 1997

A Generalized Coloring Of Graphs, Ashok Amin, Lane Clark, John P. Mcsorley, Hui Wang, Grant Zhang

Articles and Preprints

Let X*(G) denote the minimum number of colors required in a coloring c of the vertices of G where for adjacent vertices u,v we have c(N_G[u])not=c(N_G[v]) when N_G[u]not=N_G[v], and c(u)not=c(v) when N_G[u]=N_G[v]. We show that the problem of deciding whether X*(G)=3, is NP-complete for arbitrary graphs. We find X*(G) for several classes of graphs including bipartite graphs, complete multipartite graphs, as well as, cycles and their complements. A sharp lower bound is given for X*(G) in terms of X(G) and an upper bound is given for X*(G) in terms of Delta(G). For regular graphs with girth at least four we …

Barium Chronologies From South Florida Reef Corals - Environmental Implications, D. Anderegg, Richard E. Dodge, Peter K. Swart, L. Fisher

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Benthic algal blooms (e.g., Codium isthmocladum) have become increasingly common on reefs and hardgrounds of Southeast Florida. The contribution from possible responsible nutrient sources, including natural upwelling and local pollution, has not been quantified. In an attempt to differentiate each potential source, lattice-bound barium concentrations in the skeletons of two common Southeast Florida stony coral species (Montastraea faveolata and Solenastrea bournoni) were measured by isotope dilution inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). Specimens were collected offshore between 26˚01'-57'N at shallow (10m) and deep (20m) reefs. X-rays of skeletal slabs revealed annual density bands which guided annual and subannual …

Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead Jan 1997

Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Over the past few decades our focus on learning science has evolved (Aikenhead, 1996; Cobern, 1993, 1994; Solomon, 1994). The psychological perspectives on the individual learner of earlier years, such as Piaget, Ausubel, and personal constructivism (West and Pines, 1985), have expanded to encompass sociological perspectives that contextualize learning in social settings; for instance, social constructivism, science for specific social purposes, and situated cognition (Goodnow, 1990; Hennessy, 1993; Layton, Davey and Jenkins, 1986; O'Loughlin, 1992; Solomon, 1987; Tharp and Gallimore, 1988). This chapter addresses the next stage in the evolution of our focus on learning science—an anthropological perspective that contextualizes …

Price Dispersions In Auction Markets: A Case Study Of The Cattle Auction Markets, Gertrude S. Muwanga, Donald L. Snyder, Deevon Bailey Jan 1997

Price Dispersions In Auction Markets: A Case Study Of The Cattle Auction Markets, Gertrude S. Muwanga, Donald L. Snyder, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This study investigated the different factors affecting selected cattle auction prices and their dispersions to establish the market structure and nature of price equilibria. Overall, price dispersions were influenced by the season, type of cattle, breed, sex, geographical location, total number of lots auctioned, price slides, proportions of different cattle classes, lot size, base weight, type of flesh and type of frame. Prices were highest in winter and lowest in fall. Prices variations were lowest in winter and highest in fall. Price dispersions were more peaked in fall and least peaked in summer. Price equilibria were monopolistically competitive, monopsonistically competitive, …

Using The Arts To Decrease The Educational Failure Of At-Risk Students, Agnes L. Scott Jan 1997

Using The Arts To Decrease The Educational Failure Of At-Risk Students, Agnes L. Scott

Graduate Research Papers

The number of at-risk students who are destined for educational failure, quitting school before graduation or by not learning while attending school, is increasing at an unprecedented rate (Office of Educational Research and Improvement, 1992). If America does not sufficiently educate its increasing numbers of at-risk students, the nation's social and economic status may suffer due to a deteriorated educational system. These national concerns provide an opportunity to address appropriate educational interventions to help at-risk students. This paper will review the literature which suggests using the arts to decrease the educational failure of at-risk students.

Optical Polarimetry, High–Resolution Spectroscopy And Ir Analysis Of The Chamaeleon I Dark Cloud, E. Covino, E. Palazzi, Bryan E. Penprase, H. E. Schwarz, L. Terranegra

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

We present optical polarimetry and high resolution spectroscopy of a sample of stars toward the Chamaeleon I dark cloud. We use our polarimetry which includes 33 stars to study the wavelength dependence of the degree and position angle of polarization.

From our data we found, by interpretation of the various correlations between the polarimetry, photometry and IRAS fluxes, the following:
the probable presence of shocked molecular gas; a warm molecular CH component; small dust grains at the edges of the cloud, and larger grains in the central parts, which are causing the polarization.

Our results provide a consistent picture of …

Environmental Assessment For Coal Planning Decisions In The Carbon Basin Area Of The Great Divide Resource Area, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management Jan 1997

Environmental Assessment For Coal Planning Decisions In The Carbon Basin Area Of The Great Divide Resource Area, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (WY)

In 1982, a federal coal lease was issued for approximately 60% of the federal coal lands located in the Carbon Basin. Because this lease was still in effect at the time the current BLM land use plan (the Great Divide Resource Area Resource Management Plan-RMP-1990) covering the Carbon Basin area was prepared, it was exempt from the coal screening/planning requirements. However, development of this lease was never pursued and the lease expired in 1992. Also at the time the Great Divide RMP was prepared, there was no other interest expressed by industry in obtaining federal coal leases in the area. …

A More General Approach To Modeling Exchange Rate Volatility, Kai-Li Wang, Christopher Fawson, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1997

A More General Approach To Modeling Exchange Rate Volatility, Kai-Li Wang, Christopher Fawson, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Exchange rates commonly exhibit periods of stability punctuated by infrequent, substantial adjustments. Statistically, this generates empirical distributions of exchange rate changes that have high peaks, long tails, and, sometimes, are asymmetric. Existing time-series estimation methods do not account for these characteristics satisfactorily. This paper introduces a more general GARCH model, based on the exponential generalized beta (EGB) family of distributions, which can accommodate most nonnormal characteristics of data, including leptokurtosis, skewness, and high peakedness, and yet remains tractable for estimation. Applied to daily U.S. dollar exchange rate data for six major currencies, the GARCH-EGB2 model uniformly outperforms conventional time-series models …

Aspects Of Arranges Marriages And The Theory Of Markov Decision Processes, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 1997

Aspects Of Arranges Marriages And The Theory Of Markov Decision Processes, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The theory of Markov decision processes (MDP) can be used to analyze a wide variety of stopping time problems in economics. In this paper, the nature of such problems is discussed and then the underlying theory is applied to the question of arranged marriages. We construct a stylized model of arranged marriages and, inter alia, it is shown that a decision maker's optimal policy depends only on the nature of the current marriage proposal, independent of whether there is recall ( storage) of previous marriage proposals.

Stochastic Food Prices And Slash-And-Burn Agriculture, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1997

Stochastic Food Prices And Slash-And-Burn Agriculture, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper explores the interrelationship between poverty, risk, and deforestation by small farmers in the low-income tropics. A nonseparable household model reveals how exogenous shocks to the mean or variance of a food price distribution affect peasants' incentives to clear forest. The resulting links between food price policy, farmer behavior, and deforestation offer an innovative explanation of the vicious cycle of peasant immiserization and tropical deforestation. An intriguing, testable hypothesis also emerges: market-oriented reforms that increase the mean and variance of food prices may inadvertently stimulate deforestation in economies in which a sizable proportion of farmers are net buyers.

Cattle Price Distribution And Implications For Market Structure, Gertrude S. Muwanga, Donald L. Snyder Jan 1997

Cattle Price Distribution And Implications For Market Structure, Gertrude S. Muwanga, Donald L. Snyder

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Theoretical price distributions and their implications for efficient and inefficient primary and retail markets are outlined. Utilizing time series data from Cattle-Fax, an empirical investigation for twelve primary markets of six cattle classes encompassing nineteen states is carried out. The empirical results indicated that the primary cattle markets were characterized by negatively skewed but peaked price distributions implying monopsonistically competitive price equilibria over time, regardless of the cattle class and region. The market structure was influenced by availability of price information, the type of cattle, weight, and geographical location.

Manufacturing Upholstered Furniture In The Southeastern U.S.: A Comparative Cost Assessment, Joshua O. Idassi, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

The upholstered household furniture industry (SIC 25 12) is extremely important in the economies of Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee. This study uses a comparative cost approach to assess the differences that exist in the manufacturing and distribution of upholstered wood household furniture among southeast U.S. states. Secondary data for raw material, labor, and transportation costs were obtained from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, for 1982, 1987, and 1992. Total costs were estimated for raw material, labor, and transportation of the finished products. A simple cost index was constructed for each cost component. Analysis of …

Orbit Structure Of Finite And Reductive Monoids, Zhuo Li Jan 1997

Orbit Structure Of Finite And Reductive Monoids, Zhuo Li

Digitized Theses

A reductive monoid is an algebraic monoid with a reductive unit group. We introduce a new class of reductive monoids, $({\cal T}, \sigma)$-irreducible monoids. Generally, we have the question of finding the orbits of the unit group of a reductive monoid acting on both sides of the monoid. Putcha and Renner give a recipe to determine the orbits for ${\cal T}$-irreducible monoids. Motivated by their construction of finite reductive monoids, the concept of (${\cal T}, \sigma)$-irreducible monoid arises naturally.

We obtain that the ${\cal T}$-irreducible monoids turn out to be a special class of the $({\cal T}, \sigma)$-irreducible monoids. We …
