Ionospheric Response To An Auroral Substorm, Robert W. Schunk, L. Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, M. D. Bowline Jan 1997

Ionospheric Response To An Auroral Substorm, Robert W. Schunk, L. Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, M. D. Bowline

All Physics Faculty Publications

The response of the ionosphere to a representative auroral substorm was simulated. The response was found to be significant at all altitudes in a large spatial region near midnight magnetic local time. In this midnight region, there were Te and Ti hot spots, substantial O+ → NO+ composition changes, non‐Maxwellian velocity distributions, transient ion upwellings, a large‐scale lowering of the F‐layer, ionization peaks that occur in the E‐region, and sharp horizontal gradients. Also, during the expansion phase, the E‐region densities increase due to auroral precipitation, while the plasma densities above 300 km decrease due to the …

Model Study Of Ground Magnetic Signatures Of Traveling Convection Vortices, Lie Zhu, P. Gifford, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk Jan 1997

Model Study Of Ground Magnetic Signatures Of Traveling Convection Vortices, Lie Zhu, P. Gifford, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk

All Physics Faculty Publications

We conducted a model study of ground magnetic signatures of traveling convection vortices (TCVs) that included both the ionospheric conductivity enhancement associated with the TCVs and the ground induction effect. We found that the localized conductivity enhancement can cause a significant distortion of the TCV current system and lead to a distortion of the ground magnetic disturbance patterns. The patterns of all three magnetic components are asymmetric, mainly in the E-W direction, and the patterns of the Z component show the strongest asymmetry (20–30%). We also found that the effect of induction currents on ground magnetic signatures of the TCVs …

The Resolution Of Chiral Dialkylarylsufonium Ions By 1h Nmr Spectroscopy, Johnathan Whetstine Jan 1997

The Resolution Of Chiral Dialkylarylsufonium Ions By 1h Nmr Spectroscopy, Johnathan Whetstine

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The goal of this research was to design a rapid Nuclear Magnetic Resonance method to measure enantiomeric excess of chiral sulfonium ions by using chiral lanthanide shift reagents. The sulfonium ions studied were dialkylarylsulfonium ions. The shift reagent that was employed was Europium (III) surrounded by chiral ligands of 3-trifluoroacetyl-d-camphor (tfc), which is derived from (+)-camphor. Ethylmcthylphenylsulfonium ion was synthesized for study as a racemic and enantiomerically enriched mixture. The sulfonium ion was then ion-paired with the shift reagent for resolution of R and S enantiomers. The best resolution was obtained with the Eu(fod)4- shift reagent, with nearly baseline resolution …

Fourmile Timber Sale Final Environmental Impact Statement, United States Forest Service Jan 1997

Fourmile Timber Sale Final Environmental Impact Statement, United States Forest Service

Final Environmental Impact Statements (ID)

This Final Environmental Impact Statement documents the analysis of four alternatives, including a "no action" alternative, that were developed for the proposed Fourmile timber sale. The sale area is on the New Meadows Ranger District of the Payette National Forest. The alternatives respond differently to the major issues and resources that were identified for this project. The purpose of the project is to improve the silvicultural conditions of timber stands in the area. Harvest emphasis to accomplish this would include removing dead, dying, and high-risk trees to improve the long term health and vigor of timber stands.

Instability In Stratified Rotating Shear Flow Along Ridges, G. A. Schmidt, E. R. Johnson Jan 1997

Instability In Stratified Rotating Shear Flow Along Ridges, G. A. Schmidt, E. R. Johnson

Journal of Marine Research

This paper examines the interaction between continuously stratified horizontal shear flow and topography. It investigates when topography whose slope changes sign (i.e., a ridge or a trench) destabilizes a shear flow. The instabilities have the form of topographic Rossby waves and rely on the background potential vorticity gradient to exist. Barotropic flow is examined in detail for general horizontal shear over stepped topography and the longwave stratified case is examined in the more specific case of linear shear flow over a top-hat ridge profile. In all cases modes are unstable over significant ranges of the relevant parameters. Stationary unstable modes …

On The Transition Between Different Dynamical Regimes Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, V. M. Kamenkovich Jan 1997

On The Transition Between Different Dynamical Regimes Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, V. M. Kamenkovich

Journal of Marine Research

Two different dynamical regimes of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current are considered: the Sverdrup regime and the frictionally controlled one. In the former the intensity of the current does not depend on friction, while in the latter it is inversely proportional to the coefficient of friction. The transition between these two regimes is studied. It is shown that the frictionally controlled regime is generated not only in the case of closed isolines of ambient potential vorticity q. The regime is formed in the case of blocked (or partially blocked) q isolines as well, if the slope of the q isolines …

Plateau Tank Apparatus For The Study Of Liquid Bridges, Andrew Resnick, J. Iwan D. Alexander Jan 1997

Plateau Tank Apparatus For The Study Of Liquid Bridges, Andrew Resnick, J. Iwan D. Alexander

Physics Faculty Publications

An apparatus has been constructed and used to study the equilibrium and dynamical behavior of liquid bridges under reduced effective gravity. Liquid bridges are created and manipulated using six independent computer controlled stepper motors which drive linear motion tables. The bridges are visualized with a high magnification coherent Fourier optical system and in an orthogonal view using incoherent white light. By calibrating a density hydrometer and measuring the interfacial energy between the bridge and bath, reliable Bond numbers as low as 10−4 can be created and held stable for extended periods of time. Dimensional control of the liquid bridges approaches …

Electronic Commerce On The Internet: Legal Developments In Taiwan, 16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 77 (1997), George C. C. Chen

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The purpose of this article is to share information about "outstanding legal issues" that Taiwan has experienced in its use of the Internet. It does through five topics. First, the issue of contracts is addressed using the present laws in Taiwan. Contracts are based on an "offer" by one party and "acceptance" of a second party. Digital products displayed on the Internet are said to constitute an offer when it bears a price, but a legal question arises out of how to constitute acceptance. Taiwan law looks to the law of the country where the offer was made to govern …

Eggs In Baskets: Distributing The Risks Of Electronic Signatures, 15 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 189 (1997), Benjamin Wright

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Many risks are prevalent with the traditional signing of a paper document. The most notable is forgery. Under current law, the burden of proving the authenticity of a signature is on the recipient, not the signer. This burden motivates the recipient to be responsible. For instance, when accepting a signature, the recipient may wish to elicit further evidence of genuineness and request the signer to acknowledge his or her signature before a notary public. Considering the many risks associated with the authentication of paper documents, the authentication of electronic documents and signatures will not be different. Strategies have been developed …

Blackhole In Cyberspace: The Legal Void In The Internet, 15 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 413 (1997), Alexander Gigante

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Most people surf the Internet with little concern for who makes decisions regarding Internet administrative matters and who has the authority to make those decisions. Initially, as the Internet evolved out of a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1969, many "founder groups," such as the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, formed under the auspices of the federal government to administer the network's development. While these groups continue to function today as the main decision-making bodies over all aspects of the Internet's governance, several newer organizations, such as the Internet Society, have taken an important role in the …
