A Sm-poor mixture of Fe-substituted Sm2Co17, having the nominal stoichiometry of Sm0.080Co0.645Fe0.276, was ball-milled to explore the possibility of enhancing its remanence through direct microstructural refinement. With milling, the Sm2(Co0.7Fe0.3)17 compound disassociates to a body-centered-cubic supersaturated SmCoFe solid solution and a residual SmCoFe amorphous phase. Correspondingly, the coercive field values first increase, peaking at 0.83 kOe after 180 min of milling, then decrease with continued milling to
Getting Rid Of The Old Gas-Guzzler: The Federal Gasoline Tax As A Tool Of Public Policy, Michael T. Heaney
Getting Rid Of The Old Gas-Guzzler: The Federal Gasoline Tax As A Tool Of Public Policy, Michael T. Heaney
Draftings In
On August 9, 1993, U.S. President Bill Clinton signed into law a 4.3 cents per gallon increase in the federal gasoline tax. This increase, which brought the new federal tax level to 15.4 cents per gallon, was chosen from a menu of alternate options for energy taxation, including a British Thermal Unit (BTU) based tax and a tax on sulfur emissions. The increase was met with considerable political resistance and only passed by a narrow margin-2 votes in the House of Representatives and a tie broken in the Senate by the Vice President-after a protracted ten month debate. Although it …

Fracture Permeability And Its Relationship To In-Situ Stress In The Dixie Valley, Nevada, Geothermal Reservoir, Colleen A. Barton, Stephen Hickman, Roger H. Morin, Mark D. Zoback, Thomas Finkbeiner, John Sass, Dick Benoit
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
An extensive suite of spinner flowmeter, high-resolution temperature and borehole televiewer logs were acquired in a 2.7-km-deep well drilled into a fault-hosted geothermal reservoir at Dixie Valley, Nevada. Localized perturbations to wellbore temperature and flow were used to identify hydraulically conductive fractures. Comparison of these data with fracture orientations from the borehole televiewer logs indicates that hydraulically conductive fractures in crystalline rocks within and adjacent to the producing fault zone have an orientation distinct from the overall fracture population. In conjunction with in-situ stress measurements from this well, Coulomb analysis indicates that these permeable fractures are critically stressed, potentially active …
Infrared Spectroscopy Of Nickel And Iron Geoporphyrins, Kewei Xu
Infrared Spectroscopy Of Nickel And Iron Geoporphyrins, Kewei Xu
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The first assignments of a number of vibrational modes to the infrared spectra of nickel and iron porphyrins are presented. The purpose of this work was to establish a library of reference spectra which can be used in the identification of geoporphyrins from coal. The infrared regions of 1700-1200 cm·' and 1200-600 cm·1 are informative and display a rich array of skeletal and alkyl substituent modes. The detailed analyses indicate that nickel and iron complexes of the four etioporphyrin (Etio) I-IV isomers exhibit notable differences at certain positions, especially in the 800-700 cm·' and 1000-900 cm·' subregions, which should enable …

Classification: More Than Just Branching Patterns Of Evolution, Tod F. Stuessy
Classification: More Than Just Branching Patterns Of Evolution, Tod F. Stuessy
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The past 35 years in biological systematics have been a time of remarkable philosophical and methodological developments. For nearly a century after Darwin's Origin of Species, systematists worked to understand the diversity of nature based on evolutionary relationships. Numerous concepts were presented and elaborated upon, such as homology, parallelism, divergence, primitiveness and advancedness, cladogenesis and anagenesis. Classifications were based solidly on phylogenetic concepts; they were avowedly monophyletic. Phenetics emphasized the immense challenges represented by phylogeny reconstruction and advised against basing classifications upon it. Pheneticists forced reevaluation of all previous classificatory efforts, and objectivity and repeatability in both grouping and …
Diagonal Operators, S-Numbers, And Bernstein Pairs, Asuman Güven Aksoy, Grzegorz Lewicki
Diagonal Operators, S-Numbers, And Bernstein Pairs, Asuman Güven Aksoy, Grzegorz Lewicki
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
Replacing the nested sequence of ''finite" dimensional subspaces by the nested sequence of "closed" subspaces in the classical Bernstein lethargy theorem, we obtain a version of this theorem for the space B(X , Y) of all bounded linear maps. Using this result and some properties of diagonal operators, we investigate conditions under which a suitable pair of Banach spaces form an exact Bernstein pair.We also show that many "classical" Banach spaces, including the couple (Lp [O, 1] , Lq[O, 1]) form a Bernstein pair with respect to any sequence of s-numbers (sn) ,for 1 < p < ∞ and 1 ≤ q < ∞ …

Soil Assessment Of The West Gingin Area, Henry Smolinski, G G. Scholz
Soil Assessment Of The West Gingin Area, Henry Smolinski, G G. Scholz
Land resources series
Soils of approximately 80,000 hectares in the West Gingin area, 100 km north of Perth, were surveyed from 1987 to 1989. The area lies on the Swan Coastal Plain within the Gingin Shire. The soils were mapped by the free survey method at a scale of 1:50,000. Thirty-five major soil associations and complexes were identified. These soils have been formed from various parent materials in a a range of depositional environments. Siliceous sand and sodic soils formed in alluvial-lacustrine sediments predominate. The main soils were sampled for chemical and physical analysis and their morphological, chemical and physical properties are discussed …

Business Book Chapters
Few economists in the post-war period have made such a lasting impression on macroeconomic policy as Alban William Housego `Bill' Phillips. The empirical Curve, with which he is most often associated, examined wage inflation and unemployment data for the United Kingdom for 1861-1957, with a view to gauging the size of the equilibrant forces that would be necessary to reduce the swing of the business cycle `pendulum'. The idea of an inflation-unemployment `trade-off' derived from a glance at this Curve, was `snatched at' first by American Keynesians, and, in an extraordinarily brief period of time, it became the cornerstone of …
