A Morphological Array Image Processor Controller Chip Set, Christopher Insalaco Feb 1997

A Morphological Array Image Processor Controller Chip Set, Christopher Insalaco

Theses

The design, simulation and layout of a controller chip set for a morphological array image processor shall be discussed. These VLSI chips in conjunction with the Morphological Array Processor (MAP) and Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) chip sets perform the morphological image processing operations of erosion and dilation on 512x512 pixel, 8-bit gray scale images using a 7x7 windowing matrix in real time (60 frames per second). The controller chip set design allows for pipelining of successive MAP's as well as operation on 1024x1024 pixel, 8-bit gray scale images. To facilitate the design, additional scaleable CMOS standard library cells and corresponding …

Disk-Directed I/O For Mimd Multiprocessors, David Kotz Feb 1997

Disk-Directed I/O For Mimd Multiprocessors, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Many scientific applications that run on today's multiprocessors, such as weather forecasting and seismic analysis, are bottlenecked by their file-I/O needs. Even if the multiprocessor is configured with sufficient I/O hardware, the file-system software often fails to provide the available bandwidth to the application. Although libraries and enhanced file-system interfaces can make a significant improvement, we believe that fundamental changes are needed in the file-server software. We propose a new technique, disk-directed I/O, to allow the disk servers to determine the flow of data for maximum performance. Our simulations show that tremendous performance gains are possible both for simple reads …

Transportable Information Agents, Daniela Rus, Robert Gray, David Kotz Feb 1997

Transportable Information Agents, Daniela Rus, Robert Gray, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Transportable agents are autonomous programs. They can move through a heterogeneous network of computers under their own control, migrating from host to host. They can sense the state of the network, monitor software conditions, and interact with other agents or resources. The network-sensing tools allow our agents to adapt to the network configuration and to navigate under the control of reactive plans. In this paper we describe the design and implementation of the navigation system that gives our agents autonomy. We also discuss the intelligent and adaptive behavior of autonomous agents in distributed information-gathering tasks.

The Underrepresentation Of Minorities In The Legal Profession: A Critical Race Theorist's Perspective, Alex M. Johnson Jr. Feb 1997

The Underrepresentation Of Minorities In The Legal Profession: A Critical Race Theorist's Perspective, Alex M. Johnson Jr.

Michigan Law Review

Over the last four years, I have taught a course in Critical Race Theory at the University of Virginia School of Law three times. Although each course is different, given the interplay between the teacher and the students and the integration of new developments into the course, there has been one constant subject that the students and I address: Of what import is the development of Critical Race Theory for the legal profession and larger society? Can Critical Race Theory have a positive or any effect for those outside legal academia? This article represents an attempt to explore that question …

Epr Studies On The Mono- And Dicobalt(Ii)-Substituted Forms Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica. Insight Into The Catalytic Mechanism Of Dinuclear Hydrolases, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz Feb 1997

Epr Studies On The Mono- And Dicobalt(Ii)-Substituted Forms Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica. Insight Into The Catalytic Mechanism Of Dinuclear Hydrolases, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The structure and function of the prototypical dinuclear hydrolase, namely, the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP), was probed by EPR spectroscopy of the mono- and dicobalt(II)-substituted derivatives. A new systematic protocol for the interpretation of Co(II) EPR spectra is described and the S = 3/2 spin states of the Co(II)-substituted forms of the enzyme have been characterized. This protocol allows the simulation of line shape using theoretically allowed geff values corresponding to an isotropic greal value. In addition, the gross distortion of EPR spectra of high-spin S = 3/2 Co(II) ions has been investigated, …

On Power Reduction Of Fir Digital Filters Using Constrained Least Squares Solution, Khurram Muhammad, Kaushik Roy Feb 1997

On Power Reduction Of Fir Digital Filters Using Constrained Least Squares Solution, Khurram Muhammad, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report, we apply constraint least squares solution (CLS) to the problem of reducing the number of operations in FIR digital filters with a motivation of reducing its power consumption. The constraints are defined by the maximum allowable add/subtract operations in forming the products which are used in computing the output. We show that truncation and rounding 0.f coefficients can be viewed as power constrained least squares (PCLS) solutions. Further, we show that in dedicated DSP processor based architectures it is possible to reduce power by using PCLS coefficients along with appropriately modified multipliers. It is also shown that …

On The Classification Of Computable Languages, John Case, Efim Kinber, Arun Sharma, Frank Stephan Feb 1997

On The Classification Of Computable Languages, John Case, Efim Kinber, Arun Sharma, Frank Stephan

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

A one-sided classifier converges to 1 on every set inside a given class and outputs infinitely often a 0 on every set outside the class. A two-sided classifier converges in the first case to 1 and in the second to 0. This paper considers one-sided and two-sided classifiers dealing with computable sets as input. It provides theorems from which the classifiability of natural examples can be assessed and investigates the relations of the types of classification to inductive learning theory and structural complexity theory in terms of Turing degrees. Furthermore, it deals with the special cases of classification from positive …

The Fate And Disposition Of Metolachlor And 2, 4-D Under Irrigated Corn And Turf, Ghassan R. Musharrafieh, Richard C. Peralta, Robert W. Hill, Howard M. Deer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A field lysimeter experiment was conducted during the summers of 1993 and 1994, at the River Laboratory, Utah State University, Logan, Utah. The intent was to study the fate and disposition of metolachlor and 2,4-D in a one dimensional soil system. Metolachlor was applied to corn and 2,4-D was applied to turf. The mobility, persistence, and degradation of these herbicides were investigated in the field lysimeters using four irrigation treatment levels on corn and two irrigation levels on turf. The four irrigation levels applied to corn were 0, 30, 60, and 120 percent of potential evapotranspiration. The two irrigation levels …

Minimizing Channel Density With Movable Terminals, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih Feb 1997

Minimizing Channel Density With Movable Terminals, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We give algorithms to minimize density for VLSI channel routing problems with terminals that are movable subject to certain constraints. The main cases considered are channels with linear order constraints, channels with linear order constraints and separation constraints, channels with movable modules containing fixed terminals, and channels with movable modules and terminals. In each case, we improve previous results for running time and space by a factor of L/\lgn and L, respectively, where L is the channel length, and n is the number of terminals.

When Portfolios Become Part Of The Grading Process: A Case Study In A Junior High Setting, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson, Carmen Dykema, Randy Lloyd

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Formal assessments have long served as our society's most privileged indices of student learning and school accountability. Hence, both learning and school effectiveness have often been equated with standardized test scores and/or grades. The privilege accorded to external assessment has tended to minimize the role of teachers and, even more dramatically, students in the assessment process. Assessments are external tools that are administered to teachers and students. For teachers, this often leads to a tension between their curricular goals and the assessment measures they must use in the classroom (Mitchell, 1992; Pearson, DeStefano, & Garcia, in press). Students are rarely …

Across-Column Cracks And Axial Splits In S2 Saline Ice Under Compression, E. M. Schulson, S. Qi, J. S. Melton, E. T. Gratz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Experiments on plate-like specimens have established that across-column cracks from within S2 (columnar) salt-water ice when compressed uniaxially along a direction inclined to the long axis of the grains. Wing cracks initiate from the across-column cracks and lengthen into axial splits when the ice is rapidly deformed; correspondingly; the macroscopic behavior changes from ductile to brittle. The across-column cracking is attributed to grain-boundary sliding, and the splitting to the suppression of crack-tip creep.

Sensitivity Of Availability Estimates To Input Data Characterization, Darren P. Durkee Feb 1997

Sensitivity Of Availability Estimates To Input Data Characterization, Darren P. Durkee

Theses and Dissertations

Reliability analysts are often faced with the challenge of characterizing the behavior of system components based on limited data. Any insight into which model input data is most significant and how much data is necessary to achieve desired accuracy requirements will improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the data collection and data characterization processes. This thesis assesses potential significant factors in the probabilistic characterization of component failure and repair behavior with respect to the effect on system availability estimates. Potential factors were screened for significance utilizing fractional. factorial and Plackett-Burman experimental designs for several system models developed using an …

Optimizing Airborne Area Surveillance Asset Placement, Douglas E. Fuller Feb 1997

Optimizing Airborne Area Surveillance Asset Placement, Douglas E. Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

Currently there is no automated planning tool for the optimum positioning of USAF area surveillance assets for a theater level campaign. This research seeks to find the optimum or near optimum placement of the limited USAF airborne surveillance assets against a theater level target set. The problem of finding the optimum orbit points can be modeled as a classic maximal covering location problem (MCLP). Operational constraints on the placement of surveillance aircraft can be handled by preprocessing the potential orbit points to eliminate infeasible orbit points. Heavy emphasis is placed on preprocessing the data to reduce problem size and hence …

Optical And Magneto-Optical Constants Of Mnpt3, K. W. Wierman, J. N. Hilfiker, R. F. Sabiryanov, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Roger D. Kirby, John A. Woollam Feb 1997

Optical And Magneto-Optical Constants Of Mnpt3, K. W. Wierman, J. N. Hilfiker, R. F. Sabiryanov, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Roger D. Kirby, John A. Woollam

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Optically thick films of MnPt3 were deposited on quartz using dc magnetron sputtering. The films were covered with an SiOx protective overcoat and annealed in vacuum at 850 °C for 1 h to form the crystalline L12 (Cu3Au) cubic structure. These films have a high degree of long-range order and are highly textured with the (111) axis along the film normal. Variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements were taken over the spectral range of 1.2–4.2 eV to determine the optical constants of both MnPt3 and the SiOx overcoat. Spectroscopic magneto-optic Kerr rotation and …

Centimeter-Wave Reflection In The Nitrates And Nitrites Of Sodium And Potassium: Experiment And Theory, Steven G. Cornelison, Arthur Guass, Jr., J. Krane, John R. Hardy Feb 1997

Centimeter-Wave Reflection In The Nitrates And Nitrites Of Sodium And Potassium: Experiment And Theory, Steven G. Cornelison, Arthur Guass, Jr., J. Krane, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

Temperature-dependent centimeter-wave reflection is studied in powdered samples of potassium nitrate (KNO3), potassium nitrite (KNO2), sodium nitrate (NaNO3), and sodium nitrite (NaNO2). Temperature-dependent reflection measurements at centimeter-wave frequencies were performed on an HP8510B Network analyzer based reflectometer. These measurements are compared to calculations utilizing a Debye relaxation model. Reflection losses seen in KNO2 and NaNO2 are expected to be due to the presence of permanent dipoles that are excited to ‘‘hopping’’ modes as the temperature is raised. Although NaNO3 shows little reflection losses, KNO3 shows significant losses as …

Inductive Neural Logic Network And The Scm Algorithm, Ah-Hwee Tan, Loo-Nin Teow Feb 1997

Inductive Neural Logic Network And The Scm Algorithm, Ah-Hwee Tan, Loo-Nin Teow

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Neural Logic Network (NLN) is a class of neural network models that performs both pattern processing and logical inferencing. This article presents a procedure for NLN to learn multi-dimensional mapping of both binary and analog data. The procedure, known as the Supervised Clustering and Matching (SCM) algorithm, provides a means of inferring inductive knowledge from databases. In contrast to gradient descent error correction methods, pattern mapping is learned by an inductive NLN using fast and incremental clustering of input and output patterns. In addition, learning/encoding only takes place when both the input and output match criteria are satisfied in a …

Analytical Solutions Of Openings Formed By Intersection Of A Cylindrical Shell And An Oblique Nozzle Under Internal Pressure, Hengming Cai Jan 1997

Analytical Solutions Of Openings Formed By Intersection Of A Cylindrical Shell And An Oblique Nozzle Under Internal Pressure, Hengming Cai

Dissertations

Since several decades ago, many authors have published their research results about local stress distributions of shells and shell-nozzles both analytically and numerically. However, there has not been a published paper, which deals with analytical solutions of cylindrical shell and oblique nozzle, even though in the case of openings formed by intersection of a cylindrical shell and an oblique nozzle.

A comprehensive analytical study of local stress factors at the area of openings formed by intersection of a cylindrical shell and an oblique nozzle under internal pressure is presented in this dissertation.

By means of traditional approach in theory of …

Adaptive Distributed Detection With Applications To Cellular Cdma, Jian-Guo Chen Jan 1997

Adaptive Distributed Detection With Applications To Cellular Cdma, Jian-Guo Chen

Dissertations

Chair and Varshney have derived an optimal rule for fusing decisions based on the Bayesian criterion. To implement the rule, probabilities of detection PD and false alarm PF for each detector must be known, which is not readily available in practice. This dissertation presents an adaptive fusion model which estimates the PD and PF adaptively by a simple counting process. Since reference signals are not given, the decision of a local detector is arbitrated by the fused decision of all the other local detectors. Adaptive algorithms for both equal probable and unequal probable sources, for independent …

Least Space-Time First Scheduling Algorithm : Scheduling Complex Tasks With Hard Deadline On Parallel Machines, Bo-Chao Cheng Jan 1997

Least Space-Time First Scheduling Algorithm : Scheduling Complex Tasks With Hard Deadline On Parallel Machines, Bo-Chao Cheng

Dissertations

Both time constraints and logical correctness are essential to real-time systems and failure to specify and observe a time constraint may result in disaster. Two orthogonal issues arise in the design and analysis of real-time systems: one is the specification of the system, and the semantic model describing the properties of real-time programs; the other is the scheduling and allocation of resources that may be shared by real-time program modules.

The problem of scheduling tasks with precedence and timing constraints onto a set of processors in a way that minimizes maximum tardiness is here considered. A new scheduling heuristic, Least …

Bilinear Time-Frequency Representations Of Heart Rate Variability And Respiration During Stress, Rindala Saliba Jan 1997

Bilinear Time-Frequency Representations Of Heart Rate Variability And Respiration During Stress, Rindala Saliba

Dissertations

Recently, joint time-frequency signal representation has received considerable attention as a powerful tool for analyzing a variety of signals and systems. In particular, if the frequency content is time varying as in signals of biological origin which often do not comply with the stationarity assumptions, then this approach is quite attractive. In this dissertation, we explore the possibility of better representation of two particular biological signals, namely heart rate variability (HRV) and respiration. We propose the use of time-frequency analysis as a new and innovative approach to examine the physical and mental exertion attributed to exercise. Two studies are used …
