Improving Flavor Symmetry In The Kogut-Susskind Hadron Spectrum, James E. Hetrick, T. Blum
All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science
We study the effect of modifying the coupling of Kogut-Susskind quarks to the gauge field by replacing the link matrix in the quark action by a “fat link,” or sum of link plus three-link paths. Flavor symmetry breaking, determined by the mass difference between the Goldstone and non-Goldstone local pions, is reduced by approximately a factor of 2 by this modification.
Ideas Of The Marketplace: A Guide To The 1996 Telecommunications Act,, Michael I. Meyerson
Ideas Of The Marketplace: A Guide To The 1996 Telecommunications Act,, Michael I. Meyerson
All Faculty Scholarship
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 represented an enormous experimental step towards deregulating the telecommunications marketplace while opening it up to competition. With an eye towards breaking up the telecommunications monopolies held by local telephone service providers, the Act created regulations that forced local carriers to share their market and their resources with other telecommunications providers. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 itself is extremely complex. This article is a "guided tour" through the major provisions of the Act.
The first step in understanding the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is to understand how the telecommunications industry operates. Part two of this article …

Drought Network News (1994–2001)
In the October issue of Drought Network News, I briefly discussed two policy initiatives that developed in response to the severe and widespread drought that affected the Southwest and southern Great Plains states in the United States during 1996. The first of these activities, a multistate workshop (and its subsequent report), was coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This report was submitted to President Clinton in late August; it contained a series of recommendations that focused on short- and long-term issues. The second initiative, under the leadership of the Western Governors’ Association (WGA), was not available in final …

Teaching Electromagnetic Field Theory Using Differential Forms, Karl F. Warnick, Richard H. Selfridge, David V. Arnold
Teaching Electromagnetic Field Theory Using Differential Forms, Karl F. Warnick, Richard H. Selfridge, David V. Arnold
Faculty Publications
The calculus of differential forms has significant advantages over traditional methods as a tool for teaching electromagnetic (EM) field theory. First, films clarify the relationship between field intensity and flux density, by providing distinct mathematical and graphical representations for the two types of fields. Second, Ampere's and Faraday's laws obtain graphical representations that are as intuitive as the representation of Gauss's law. Third, the vector Stokes theorem and the divergence theorem become special cases of a single relationship that is easier for the student to remember, apply, and visualize than their vector formulations. Fourth, computational simplifications result from the use …
On A Proximal Point Method For Optimization In Banach Spaces, Alfredo N. Iusem, Dan Butnariu
On A Proximal Point Method For Optimization In Banach Spaces, Alfredo N. Iusem, Dan Butnariu
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
We analyze the behavior of a parallel proximal point method for solving convex optimization problems in reflexive Banach spaces. Similar algorithms were known to converge under the implicit assumption that the norm of the space is Hilbertian. We extend the area of applicability of the proximal point method to solving convex optimization problems in Banach spaces on which totally convex functions can be found. This includes the class of all smooth uniformly convex Banach spaces. Also, our convergence results leave more flexibility for the choice of the penalty function involved in the algorithm and, in this way, allow simplification of …

Creation of large and complex World Wide Web sites is hampered by the "page at a time" approach of many tools and the programming knowledge and custom software development required for automated solutions. This report describes the development of the Automatic Site Markup Language (ASML). ASML is a new markup language designed to produce large, complicated web sites which can include dynamic content. ASML extends HTML with new, high-level features while still preserving complete compatibility with common browser and server technologies. It has powerful indexing and searching facilities, and enables the automatic translation of document formats. Most importantly, ASML provides …

Ideas Of The Marketplace: A Guide To The 1996 Telecommunications Act, Michael I. Meyerson
Federal Communications Law Journal
The 1996 Telecommunications Act has forever transformed the regulatory landscape. The Act contemplates the creation of competition across the full telecommunications field, even in areas such as local telephone service and cable television service that had previously been monopoly controlled. The main combatants in this new marketplace will tend to be even larger companies than those currently dominating the scene. There are numerous dangers, however, that will have to be averted in order for the Act to be successful. The first is that existing monopolies, such as the BOCs and cable operators, will leverage their current power either to gain …

Monte Carlo Simulation Of The Solid To Superliquid Phase Transition Of Langmuir Monolayers. Ii. Characteristics Of Phase Transition, M.D. Gibson, D.R. Swanson, Craig J. Eckhardt, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
The restricted-to-free rotator phase transition of fatty acid monolayers has been modeled using a potential which represents the amphiphiles as planar cross sections of fourfold symmetry. Using much larger system sizes than paper I [D. R. Swanson, R. J. Hardy, and C. J. Eckhardt, J. Chem. Phys. 99, 8194 (1993)], Monte Carlo simulations of the isobaric–isothermal ensemble of model systems with varied number of objects were undertaken to study the effect of system size on the characteristics and order of the phase transition. A peak in the specific heat vs temperature curve was observed near the transition. For each system …

Dynamic Correlations In Porous Media, J.C. Lee
Faculty Publications
When binary liquid mixtures are infused into various random porous media, past experiment have shown that different media affect the dynamic correlations of concentration fluctuations in different ways. Vycor glasses of relatively small pore size and dilute gels allow the exponential bulk mode to remain in the final ensemble average, but Vycor glasses of vary large pore size do not. We take this to mean that the relaxation time of the bulk mode is spatialIy homogeneous in the two former media but heterogeneous in the latter media. Thus we search for a heterogeneous dynamic mode with an Ising model. We …

Natural disasters like volcanic eruptions occur infrequently, but if they occur near nuclear power plants or high‐level radioactive waste repositories, local and global communities can be threatened. Ideally, such facilities should be constructed only where geologic risk is very low.
Estimating the probabilities of such events requires a comprehensive understanding of site geology and the geologic processes operating in the site region on timescales of 104 to 107years. In light of these requirements, geologists and geophysicists must continually improve techniques for site characterization.

New Constraints On Source Processes Of Volcanic Tremor At Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica, Using Broadband Seismic Data, John P. Benoit, Stephen R. Mcnutt
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Broadband seismic data recorded 2.3 km from the active vent of Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica, provide new constraints on tremor source processes. Arenal's tremor contains as many as seven harmonics, whose frequencies vary temporally by up to 75 percent, from initial values of 1.9 Hz for the first peak immediately following explosive eruptions to 3.2–3.5 Hz several minutes later. We infer that gas bubble concentration is variable within the conduit and also changes as a function of time, thereby changing the acoustic velocity. We infer that the source is a shallow, 200–660 m-long, vertically oriented 1-D resonator with matched boundary …

An Atlas Of Computed Equivalent Widths Of Quasar Broad Emission Lines, Kirk Korista, Jack Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, Dima Verner
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present graphically the results of several thousand photoionization calculations of broad emission-line clouds in quasars, spanning 7 orders of magnitude in hydrogen ionizing flux and particle density. The equivalent widths of 42 quasar emission lines are presented as contours in the particle density-ionizing flux plane for a typical incident continuum shape, solar chemical abundances, and cloud column density of N(H) = 1023 cm-2. Results are similarly given for a small subset of emission lines for two other column densities (1022 and 1024 cm-2), five other incident continuum shapes, and a gas …

Conformations And Relative Stabilities Of The Cis And Trans Isomers In A Series Of Isolated N-Phenylamides, V. P. Manea, K. J. Wilson, John R. Cable
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The gas-phase conformations of a series of isolated N-phenylamides have been determined from vibrationally resolved electronic spectra obtained by resonant two-photon ionization in a supersonic jet expansion. Both the cis and trans isomers of formanilide were identified, with the cis isomer in 6.5% abundance. The spectral features displayed by this isomer are consistent with a nonplanar geometry which undergoes a large change in the phenyl torsional angle following electronic excitation. The more abundant trans isomer of formanilide adopts a planar structure and is stabilized by 2.5 kcal/mol with respect to the cis isomer. In the excited electronic state the relative …

Automatic Video Pause Detection Filter, Xiaowen Liu, Charles B. Owen, Fillia S. Makedon
Computer Science Technical Reports
Increasing interest in multimedia research has been drawn upon the development of video indexing and content-based image retrieval techniques. In this report, we proposed several pause detection algorithms, which instead of searching for significant visual transitions, the algorithms detect significant pauses in video streams. A realization of the algorithms was implemented using ImageTcl toolkit developed at Dartmouth Experimental Visualization Laboratory. In addition to proposing and studying the effectiveness of the pause detection algorithms, another major goal will be to incorporate our algorithms into ImageTcl and test the stability and applicability of the ImageTcl environment. Priliminary experiments showed relatively good results …

An Efficient Scheme For A Distributed Video Retrieval System For Remote Users, Fillia Makedon, James Matthews, Charles Owen, Samuel Rebelsky
Computer Science Technical Reports
The new era of digital video and multimedia technologies has created the potential for large libraries of digital video. With this new technology come the challenges of creating usable means by which such large and diverse depositories of digital information (digital libraries) can be efficiently queried and accessed so that (a) the response is fast, (b) the communication over the Internet is minimal and (c) the retrieval is characterized by high precision and recall. In this paper we discuss how existing digital video editing tools, together with data compression techniques, can be combined to create a fast, accurate and cost …
A Cost Impact Assessment Tool For Pfs Logistics Consulting, Angela P. Giddings
A Cost Impact Assessment Tool For Pfs Logistics Consulting, Angela P. Giddings
Theses and Dissertations
Response surface methodology (RSM) is used for optimality analysis of the cost parameters in mixed integer linear programming. This optimality analysis goes beyond traditional sensitivity and parametric analysis in allowing investigation of the optimal objective function value response over pre-specified ranges on multiple problem parameters. Design of experiments and least squares regression are used to indicate which cost parameters have the greatest impact on the optimal objective function value total cost-and to approximate the optimal total cost surface over the specified ranges on the parameters. The mixed integer linear programming problems of interest are the large-scale problems in supply chain …

An interactive MS Access&trademark; based application that aggregates the output of the SABSEL model for input into the TACWAR model is developed. The application was developed following efforts to create a functional approximation of the SABSEL data using neural networks, statistical networks, and traditional statistical techniques. These approximations were compared to a look-up table methodology on the basis of accuracy, (RMSE
Analysis Of Aircraft Sortie Generation With Concurrent Maintenance And General Service Times, Daniel V. Hackman
Analysis Of Aircraft Sortie Generation With Concurrent Maintenance And General Service Times, Daniel V. Hackman
Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this study was to develop an analytical methodology for evaluating an aircraft sortie generation process. The process is modeled as a closed network of general service queues with a fork join node to model concurrent servicing. The model uses the Mean Value Analysis (MVA) algorithm and general queueing network analysis by decomposition to approximate network performance measures including resource utilization and the overall sortie generation rate. The results of the study show that the analytical approximation's accuracy decreases as server utilization increases. However, when server utilization is kept in realistic ranges, the approximation is very accurate. …
Applying Tabu Heuristic To Wind Influenced, Minimum Risk And Maximum Expected Coverage Routes, Mark R. Sisson
Applying Tabu Heuristic To Wind Influenced, Minimum Risk And Maximum Expected Coverage Routes, Mark R. Sisson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to provide Air Combat Command a method for determining the number of predator unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) required to cover a pre-selected target. Extending previous research that employs reactive TABU search methods for deterministic vehicle routing problems, this thesis incorporates wind effects that can significantly alter the travel times for any given scenario. Additionally, it accounts for possible attrition by introducing minimum risk route and expected number of target covered to the objective function. The results of the TABU search and subsequent Monte-Carlo simulation: gives the number of predator's required to cover a target …

Studies of QCD in e+e−→e+e−→ Hadrons at Ecm=Ecm=} 130 and 136 GeV The ALEPH Collaboration An analysis of the properties of hadronic final states produced in electron-positron annihilation at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV is presented. The measurements are based on a data sample of 5.7 pb−1pb−1 collected in November 1995 with the \Aleph detector at LEP. Inclusive charged particle distributions, jet rates and event-shape distributions are measured and the results are compared with the predictions of QCD-based models. From the measured distributions quantities are determined for which the dependence on the centre-of-mass energy can be predicted by …

Residual Strength Of Equine Bone Is Not Reduced By Intense Fatigue Loading: Implications For Stress Fracture, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover, J. C. Gibeling, L. V. Griffin
Biomedical Engineering
Fatigue or stress fractures are an important clinical problem in humans as well as racehorses. An important question in this context is, when a bone experiences. fa!igue damage ~uring e~treme use, how much is it weakened compared to its original state? Since there are very ltmtted data on thts quesuon and stress fractures are common in racehorses, we sought to determine the effect of fatigue loading on the monotonic l:trength of equine cortical bone. Beams were machined from the dorsal, medial and lateral cortices of the third metacarpal bones of six thoroughbred racehorses. Beams from left and right bones were …
