Generalized Conjugacy Classes, Pramod N. Achar Feb 1997

Generalized Conjugacy Classes, Pramod N. Achar

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Generalized conjugation is the action of a group on its underlying set given by (g,x) -> p(g)xg-1, where p is some fixed endomorphism of G. Here we study combinatorial properties of the sizes of the orbits of the preceding action. In particular, we reduce the problem to a simpler case if p has nontrivial kernel, or if it is an inner automorphism, and we give a construction that allows a partial analysis in the general case.

Suggested Considerations For Creating A Coporate Style Manual, Melissa Gentile Feb 1997

Suggested Considerations For Creating A Coporate Style Manual, Melissa Gentile

Theses

Visual communication is the key to maintaining any kind of corporate style. Companies rely on a variety of visual aids to communicate their image to the public. The desired image that each company has of themselves can be communicated to the public through a corporate signature, a logotype, symbols, typefaces and corporate col ors. All of these visual communicators help the public to identify the company, its sub sidiaries, its activities and its involvement with the public. Companies often have so many visual aids that they have to be outlined in a corporate style manual. A corporate style manual takes …

Technical Challenges In Multiple Master Font Design With Extreme Form Change, Thomas Phinney Feb 1997

Technical Challenges In Multiple Master Font Design With Extreme Form Change, Thomas Phinney

Theses

The hypothesis was that it is possible to create a unique PostScript Multiple Master font which makes a relatively smooth transition between serifed roman and italic letterforms. In the process of creating such a font, the author discovered new principles of Multiple Master font construction and new methodologies for ensuring smooth transitions. The methodology was to first construct a prototype, in order to explore the complications of such a project; the prototype metamorphosed between the roman and italic forms of the Adobe typeface Minion. For the actual project, roman and italic extremes were newly designed, loosely based on historical models …

Core-Log-Seismic Integration As A Framework For Determining The Basin-Wide Significance Of Regional Reflectors In The Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Stephen F. Bloomer, Larry A. Mayer Feb 1997

Core-Log-Seismic Integration As A Framework For Determining The Basin-Wide Significance Of Regional Reflectors In The Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Stephen F. Bloomer, Larry A. Mayer

Affiliate Scholarship

ODP Leg 138 in the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) provided a unique opportunity to understand the paleoceanographic significance of seismic reflectors in this climatically sensitive region. Carefully offset multiple cores were spliced into a complete stratigraphic section for the upper 250 m at each site and accurate, astronomically tuned time scales were generated from these composites. Well log data provided a means to correct composite depths to true depths as well as density and velocity data for the generation of synthetic seismograms. These synthetic seismograms were used to determine the paleoceanographic significance of regionally traceable reflectors by linking variations in …

Photoluminescence Properties Of Silicon Quantum-Well Layers, Peter N. Saeta, A. C. Gallagher Feb 1997

Photoluminescence Properties Of Silicon Quantum-Well Layers, Peter N. Saeta, A. C. Gallagher

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Nanometer-scale crystal silicon films surrounded by SiO2 were prepared by oxidizing silicon-on-insulator substrates prepared from SIMOX (separation by implantation of oxygen) and crystallized hydrogenated amorphous silicon films. Average silicon layer thickness was determined from reflection spectra. When sufficiently thin (<2 >nm), all layers emitted red photoluminescence under blue and UV cw excitation, with a spectrum that did not depend on the mean layer thickness. The spectrum was roughly Gaussian with a peak energy of 1.65 eV, which is lower than for most porous silicon spectra. The time scale for the luminescence decay was ~35 μs at room temperature and …

Quantitation Of Ethidium-Stained Closed Circular Dna In Agarose Gels, Michael F. Shubsda, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak Feb 1997

Quantitation Of Ethidium-Stained Closed Circular Dna In Agarose Gels, Michael F. Shubsda, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak

Chemistry - All Scholarship

The fluorescence of ethidium bromide (EB) bound to equimolar amounts of supercoiled form I and unstrained linear form III pBR322, SV40 and PM2 DNA in agarose gels has been measured by scanning a photographic negative of the gel with a microdensitometer. For SV40 and PM2 DNA, commonly used staining conditions cause both forms, i.e. linear and supercoiled, to fluoresce to the same extent. This obviates the need to use a correction factor for the fluorescence of form I DNA when measuring the amount of this form relative to the amounts of unstrained forms in agarose gels. In the case of …

Absorption Processes: Models For Q-Identities, Don Rawlings Feb 1997

Absorption Processes: Models For Q-Identities, Don Rawlings

Mathematics

Several extensions of Blomqvist's absorption process are presented. Inherent in some of the associated distributions is a method for establishingq-identities ranging from properties of Gaussian polynomials to product expansions of basic hypergeometric series to extensions of results on Mahonian statistics. One process links the comajor index to Russian roulette. Also given are examples involving the Rogers–Ramanujan identities that demonstrate howq-expressions may be modeled with absorption processes.

Thermoconvective Instability Of Paramagnetic Fluids In A Uniform Magnetic Field, J. Huang, Boyd F. Edwards, D. D. Gray Feb 1997

Thermoconvective Instability Of Paramagnetic Fluids In A Uniform Magnetic Field, J. Huang, Boyd F. Edwards, D. D. Gray

All Physics Faculty Publications

The effect of a uniform oblique magnetic field on a laterally unbounded insulating paramagnetic fluid layer heated from below is studied using a linear stability analysis of the Navier–Stokes equations supplemented by Maxwell’s equations and the appropriate magnetic body force. Two-dimensional rolls in an arbitrary vertical plane are considered. Longitudinal rolls with axes parallel to the horizontal component of the field are the rolls most unstable to convection. The corresponding critical Rayleigh number and critical wavelength for the onset of such rolls are less than the well-known Rayleigh–Bénard values in the absence of magnetic fields. Vertical fields maximize these deviations, …

Revisiting The K-W-L: What We Knew; What We Wanted To Know; What We Learned, Anne Crout Shelly, Becky Bridwell, Linda Hyder, Nina Ledford, Paula Patterson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Good teachers are always searching for ways to enhance learning in their classrooms. Researchers and practitioners alike continue to develop and refine strategies which improve comprehension and increase retention while nourishing students' ability to learn independently. The K-W-L strategy (What-we know; what we want to know; what we learned), first described by Ogle (1986), is such a strategy. Though there is research to support the effectiveness of the KW-L, any strategy may need to be modified and refined to improve its effectiveness in promoting learning. We five teachers collaborated to study how the implementation of the KW-L can be varied …

Drought In The United States: 1996 Summary And Historical Perspective, William O. Brown, Richard R. Heim Jr.

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Considerable variation in moisture conditions, on both a spatial and temporal basis, occurred in the contiguous United States during 1996. A tenth or more of the country experienced severe to extreme short-term (i.e., monthly) precipitation deficits during nearly half of the months, but in many months there were also large areas of excessive precipitation, which resulted in overall national conditions averaging near normal to wetter than normal. From a national perspective, long-term drought peaked at mid-year, when severe drought plagued the South and Southwest.

Famine And Drought: The Question Of Food Security In Zimbabwe, Joshua Chigodora Feb 1997

Famine And Drought: The Question Of Food Security In Zimbabwe, Joshua Chigodora

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

From the time that the London Missionary Society first took Zimbabwean rainfall records at Hope Fountain in 1888, the worst droughts on record are the consecutive dry spells from 1911 to 1914, the 1946–47 drought, the 1960 drought, and the 1972–73 rainy season, which was the driest period of colonial Zimbabwe. The country also had serious food shortages in 1903, 1916, 1922, 1933, and 1942. Although the people of precolonial Zimbabwe experienced recurrent droughts, they generally had well-developed coping mechanisms that prevented high death tolls (Iliffe, 1990).

Climatic Uncertainties And Recent Experiences In Medium-Range Weather Forecasting Over Kashmir, Badrul Hasan, Rehana Habib Kanth Feb 1997

Climatic Uncertainties And Recent Experiences In Medium-Range Weather Forecasting Over Kashmir, Badrul Hasan, Rehana Habib Kanth

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Successful crop management and production require a precise and thorough understanding of agroclimatic conditions of a region. A crop experiences a range of weather conditions during its vegetative and reproductive phases. Although the agronomic inputs at optimum levels decide satisfactory and stable crop yields, the range of weather and climatic optimum prevalent at important crop stages determine the ultimate yields. Thus, even with all inputs at our disposal, we cannot afford to ignore the environmental conditions experienced by the crop. Systematic and continuous measurements of weather elements provide basic data input for tuning any type of computer-based forecasting system. This …

Changing Climatic Scenarios And Strategies For Drought Management In The Indian Arid Region, A. S. Rao, J. P. Gupta, A. S. Faroda

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

Western Rajasthan constitutes 62% of the 0.32 million km2 that make up the hot Indian arid region (Figure 1). The average annual rainfall of the area varies from less than 100 mm (coefficient of variation [CV] = 70%) in the western parts to just above 500 mm (CV = 40%) in the eastern parts of arid Rajasthan. During July and August, the eastern parts of the arid region have an assured crop growing period of 12–15 weeks, whereas the western parts mostly depend on the vagaries of the southwest monsoon. The annual potential evapotranspiration rates are 3–8 times higher …
